Its 2026 public plans cover basic single-state payroll, multi-state payroll and workforce management, or a higher-touch package with dedicated support and compliance guidance. The right tier depends less on headcount than on the states you operate in, whether you need time tracking, and how much HR assistance you expect.
For a single-state company that mainly needs payroll and tax filing, Simple is the logical starting point. Plus is the practical fit once you add multiple states, hourly scheduling, or time tracking. Premium is aimed at employers that want an advisor, compliance tools, project costing, and expanded pay options. Read the plan boundaries carefully: benefits, retirement, workers’ compensation, and some HR services may involve separate availability or add-on terms.

Gusto pricing in 2026
Gusto’s public 2026 pricing uses a monthly platform fee plus a per-person charge. The listed tiers are month-to-month rather than annual contracts, and Gusto states that customers can cancel at any time. The figures below are the recurring base prices shown publicly; they do not include any add-ons, state-specific charges, or service fees that may apply to your account.
| Plan | Base monthly fee | Per-person fee | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | $49 per month | $6 per person | Basic payroll for one state |
| Plus | $80 per month | $12 per person | Multi-state employers and teams needing time tracking or scheduling |
| Premium | $180 per month | $22 per person | Employers wanting dedicated support, HR guidance, compliance tools, and advanced pay options |
“Per person” is the quantity used in Gusto’s public plan formulas. Confirm in the enrollment flow how your specific employees, contractors, owners, or other workers are counted before signing up, particularly if you operate a mixed workforce.

Simple
Simple is the entry plan for a company running payroll in one state. It includes unlimited payroll runs, tax filings and payments, basic paid-time-off policies, and holiday pay. It is intentionally narrow: the public plan description does not position it as a multi-state payroll or full workforce-management package.
Plus
Plus adds the capabilities that usually become important as a small employer grows. It supports payroll in multiple states, unlimited next-day pay, time tracking and scheduling, and contractor invoice management. For an hourly workforce, the ability to connect recorded time and schedules to payroll can remove a separate operational workflow.
Premium
Premium adds a higher-touch service layer rather than merely increasing payroll capacity. The public feature list includes premium account support, HR guidance and tools, Gusto Business Compliance, unlimited same-day and instant pay, project-based rules and costing, and 25 included invoice payments or bank transfers. Those features are most relevant when payroll decisions involve compliance exposure, multiple projects, or a need for faster employee access to wages.
What the plans cost at different team sizes
The following examples apply the published formula (base fee plus the listed per-person rate). They are illustrations for the stated number of billed people, not quotes, and exclude add-ons or other charges.
| Billed people | Simple | Plus | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $55 per month | $92 per month | $202 per month |
| 5 | $79 per month | $140 per month | $290 per month |
| 10 | $109 per month | $200 per month | $400 per month |
| 25 | $199 per month | $380 per month | $730 per month |
These examples show why a plan decision should be based on workflow requirements, not only the platform fee. At ten people, for instance, moving from Simple to Plus costs more each month but may replace separate scheduling or time-tracking software. Premium’s larger jump is easier to justify when an advisor, compliance assistance, or project costing would otherwise require outside services.
What Gusto does beyond payroll
Gusto combines payroll calculation with the administrative tasks that surround employing people. The platform’s documented scope includes direct deposit, employee and contractor payments, W-2 and 1099 workflows, employee self-service, hiring and onboarding, time tracking, benefits administration, and HR support. Access to individual tools depends on the plan and any add-ons selected.

Payroll calculations and tax filing
Gusto calculates payroll and handles tax filings and payments on the plans that include payroll. Simple is designed for one-state operation, while Plus explicitly extends payroll to multiple states. Before enrolling, list every state in which employees work and confirm that your intended tier supports that footprint. A company that hires remotely into a second state can outgrow a single-state setup even if its headcount remains small.

Direct deposit and worker payments
Direct deposit is part of Gusto’s payroll workflow. The platform also supports payments to employees and contractors, with 1099 processes for eligible contractors. Next-day pay is listed on Plus, while Premium adds unlimited same-day and instant pay. “Same-day” and “instant” are not interchangeable promises for every banking situation; confirm cutoff times, employee eligibility, and any transaction conditions in your account terms.
Year-end forms and self-service
Employee self-service gives workers a place to access payroll information and complete routine tasks without routing every request through an administrator. Gusto supports W-2 and 1099 workflows, which can reduce year-end paperwork for a small team that does not have a dedicated payroll department. You remain responsible for supplying accurate worker, wage, tax, and classification data.
Hiring and onboarding
Hiring and onboarding tools are included in Gusto’s broader HR workflow. They can centralize new-hire information and payroll setup instead of requiring a separate handoff between recruiting, an accountant, and an HR administrator. The depth of onboarding automation and available HR tools varies by plan, so evaluate the exact screens and permissions offered during setup.
Benefits and financial administration
Independent coverage of Gusto describes support for medical, dental, and vision benefits; health savings account and flexible spending account administration; 401(k) plans; commuter benefits; workers’ compensation; and life or disability coverage. Gusto Wallet is the employee-facing app associated with the platform’s financial tools. Availability, carrier choices, state coverage, and fees can vary, so treat these categories as supported capabilities rather than a guarantee that every option is available in every location.

Retirement and commuter benefits
Gusto’s documented benefits scope includes 401(k) and commuter programs. Compare the available investment lineup, administration charges, employer-contribution handling, and required notices with the obligations your company already has. A payroll platform can simplify deductions, but it does not remove fiduciary or reporting responsibilities.
Workers’ compensation and insurance
Workers’ compensation, life, and disability coverage are among the insurance categories described for Gusto. State rules and underwriting determine what can actually be offered. Confirm whether a policy is arranged through Gusto, integrated from another provider, or administered as a separate service before assuming it is included in your plan fee.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does Gusto handle multi-state payroll?
Yes, multi-state payroll is explicitly associated with Plus and Premium. Simple is described as single-state payroll. Multi-state payroll involves more than selecting another location: each state can have different registration, withholding, unemployment, local-tax, and notice requirements. Gather your work locations, legal entities, tax account numbers, and employee addresses before moving payroll across state lines.
If you expect geographic growth, compare the cost of upgrading with the cost of maintaining separate payroll tools or manual filings. A small company with two states may benefit from Plus even when a cheaper single-state plan appears sufficient on a headcount basis.
Support, HR guidance, and compliance
Support is the clearest reason to consider Premium. Its public description includes premium account support, HR guidance and tools, and Gusto Business Compliance. That combination is intended for employers that need help interpreting routine HR decisions, documenting processes, or keeping up with compliance tasks.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Premium does not transfer legal responsibility away from the employer. Use HR guidance as an operational resource, and obtain legal or tax advice when a situation involves termination disputes, worker classification, leave claims, benefits eligibility, or a complex state rule. Ask what response times, advisor access, and covered topics apply to your account before treating “dedicated support” as unlimited consulting.
Contractor-only availability is unclear
Gusto’s public pricing pages still display a contractor-only option, while an official help article says that the contractor-only plan was no longer available as of October 1, 2026. Because those official pages conflict, do not assume a contractor-only signup is available. Check the live account or checkout flow and obtain written confirmation if your business pays contractors but has no employees.
This discrepancy matters for freelancers, agencies, and seasonal businesses. If the contractor-only option is unavailable, you may need a standard plan or another payment arrangement. Confirm how contractor invoices, 1099 preparation, and per-person billing work for your workforce before importing records.
How to choose a plan
- Map your payroll states. If every employee works in one state and you do not need scheduling or time tracking, start by evaluating Simple. If employees work in more than one state, move your comparison to Plus or Premium.
- List your worker types. Separate employees, contractors, owners, and temporary workers. Confirm which people count toward billing and which payment or tax forms you need.
- Identify operational requirements. Decide whether schedules, time tracking, contractor invoice management, project costing, or faster pay are essential. Do not pay for a higher tier solely because it has a longer feature list.
- Estimate the full monthly total. Apply the base-plus-person formula to your current and expected headcount, then add any benefits, retirement, insurance, or other services you will actually use.
- Value support needs honestly. Choose Premium when dedicated support, HR guidance, or compliance tooling can replace significant outside effort. If your administrator is comfortable self-serving routine payroll, a lower tier may be sufficient.
- Verify state and benefit availability. Confirm registrations, carrier options, implementation dates, and any local limitations before promising employees a specific benefit or pay schedule.
Implementation checklist for a small business
A careful setup prevents most payroll problems. Prepare the following before you start:
- Federal and state employer identification numbers and tax-account credentials.
- Legal business name, address, entity type, and authorized administrator details.
- Employee legal names, addresses, tax forms, pay rates, classifications, start dates, and deductions.
- Contractor information needed for 1099 reporting and invoice processing.
- Prior payroll totals and tax filings if you are switching providers during a tax year.
- Bank account and routing information for funding payroll and direct deposits.
- Written PTO, holiday-pay, pay-frequency, approval, and reimbursement policies.
- Benefits eligibility rules, plan documents, and employee enrollment dates.
After data entry, run a verification cycle before the first live payroll. Compare gross wages, deductions, employer taxes, net pay, bank funding, and tax jurisdictions against your prior records or a manually calculated sample. Confirm that every employee is assigned to the correct state and pay schedule. Keep payroll registers and tax confirmations in your normal business records.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Choosing by base fee alone
The platform fee is only one part of total cost. Per-person charges, benefits or retirement services, insurance, state-specific requirements, and optional HR tools can materially change the monthly total. Build a 12-month estimate using your expected average headcount rather than the smallest possible team.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Assuming every feature is included
Gusto’s overall product scope is broad, but feature access depends on plan and add-ons. Ask for a written list of enabled modules, implementation fees, carrier charges, and transaction limits. Premium’s 25 included invoice payments or bank transfers, for example, is a stated allowance rather than an unlimited benefit.
Ignoring state registration lead time
Adding a new state can require registrations and agency accounts before the first payroll. Start that process as soon as you know an employee will work there. Delaying setup can create late filings or emergency manual work even when the payroll software itself supports the state.
Confusing pay speed with guaranteed availability
Next-day, same-day, and instant pay depend on payroll submission timing, banking rails, employee eligibility, and funding. Confirm the cutoff schedule and communicate realistic expectations to employees.
Switching midyear without reconciling history
When changing providers during a tax year, import or enter year-to-date wages, taxes, deductions, and benefits accurately. A mismatch can produce incorrect W-2 or 1099 information even if future payroll runs calculate correctly.
Is Gusto worth it for a small business?
Gusto is worth serious consideration when a U.S. small or midsize employer wants payroll, tax filing, onboarding, benefits, and employee self-service in one workflow. The platform is especially compelling when consolidation saves an administrator from moving data among separate systems.
Simple is a sensible fit for a straightforward, single-state employer. Plus is the stronger value when multiple states, hourly schedules, or time tracking are part of daily operations. Premium earns its higher cost when a named support relationship, HR guidance, compliance tools, project costing, or faster pay has a clear business benefit.
It is less suitable when you need payroll outside the United States, highly specialized enterprise workforce management, or a contractor-only arrangement that cannot be confirmed in the current checkout flow. In those cases, verify coverage before migrating any records.
Bottom line
Gusto’s 2026 lineup is easy to understand: Simple covers core single-state payroll, Plus adds multi-state and workforce-management features, and Premium adds dedicated support and advanced HR, compliance, pay, and costing tools. Compare the recurring formula with your real headcount, verify add-ons and state availability, and resolve the contractor-only inconsistency before you commit.
