Expansions are the large, paid releases that add a major story arc, new regions and headline systems. Living World seasons are linked level-80 episodes that continue the narrative between those expansions, opening maps and adding achievements, rewards, Masteries and other horizontal progression.
They are complementary rather than interchangeable. If you want the complete Elder Dragon storyline, you need the relevant Living World chapters as well as the expansions. As of October 13, 2026, the seasons are packaged with the base game or specific expansion bundles instead of being sold as individual purchases.

Expansion and Living World: the essential difference
An expansion is a single, large content release built around a new region or group of regions and a major gameplay package. It normally introduces a substantial story arc, account-wide systems, Masteries and other features intended to define the next stage of Guild Wars 2. Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire illustrate that format: each launched with several headline maps and systems such as gliding, mounts, elite specializations, raids and open-world encounters.

A Living World season is an episodic continuation. Its level-80 episodes explain what happens after an expansion’s main events and lead into the next major release. A season can still be large in practical terms: it may open explorable zones, add events and achievements, provide unique rewards, and introduce Masteries or collections. The difference is organization and narrative role. The expansion is the main launch arc and system package; the season is the sequence of aftermath and bridge chapters around it.

Thinking of seasons as “small expansions” can lead to the wrong purchase decision. They do not replace the expansion systems, and an expansion does not automatically supply every season that follows it. The most useful question is whether you are looking for a new gameplay system and region, or for the missing story chapters and rewards that connect two expansions.
What the expansions include
Heart of Thorns
ArenaNet’s product description lists four Heart of Maguuma maps, the Mouth of Mordremoth open-world boss, three raids, gliding and elite specializations. Those features show the concentration of systems normally associated with an expansion: a new region, a major public encounter, organized group content, a movement system and profession-defining builds.
Gliding is not simply a story reward. It is an expansion-level account system supported by Masteries and designed to affect movement throughout the game. The same is true of elite specializations: they change how a profession is played and are tied to the expansion’s progression framework.

Path of Fire adds five Crystal Desert maps, nine elite specializations, three raids and mounts, according to the current ArenaNet product page. The five-map setting and mount system give the release a different identity from Heart of Thorns while retaining the same broad expansion pattern: a sizeable region, new traversal, profession options and endgame activities.
Mounts also demonstrate why owning an expansion can matter outside its own maps. They are account progression systems that can influence how you travel and explore elsewhere, while the related Masteries and collections provide goals beyond the campaign missions.

How to interpret the examples
The Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire figures are concrete examples, not a promise that every expansion has the same map count, raid count or feature list. ArenaNet’s October 2026 announcement describes the game’s history as six expansions and five Living World seasons. The first three expansions are grouped in the current Elder Dragon Saga collection, while later expansions are separate products unless a product page explicitly says otherwise.
That distinction matters when comparing a newer release with an older bundle. ArenaNet’s Janthir Wilds FAQ, for example, explicitly says that Janthir Wilds does not include Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons or Secrets of the Obscure. Owning one newer expansion therefore does not establish ownership of all earlier expansions.

Level-80 story episodes
Living World episodes are designed for level-80 characters. They advance the world narrative one chapter at a time instead of delivering the entire arc in a single expansion campaign. ArenaNet’s official story page lists eight episodes for Season 2 and six for Season 3, giving a sense of how a season is divided into playable installments.
Episodes are not only dialogue sequences. They combine missions with access to the season’s maps, events, achievements, collections and rewards. A player who skips a season can therefore miss both narrative context and systems or collections that remain useful after the story is complete.
Maps, events and rewards
ArenaNet’s current store description says each season explores the aftermath of the expansion it follows and includes new explorable maps, unique rewards, achievements, Masteries and level-80 play. These additions are often focused rather than packaged as the broad launch feature set of an expansion, but they can create substantial playtime through map events, collections and achievement goals.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Season rewards are also part of the practical distinction. If you want a particular collection, achievement track or map-based activity from an inter-expansion chapter, having the adjacent expansion alone does not guarantee access. The season entitlement is what unlocks that episode content.

Masteries and collections in a season are horizontal progression: they expand what your account can do or collect without replacing the level cap with a new traditional tier. This progression can include new ways to interact with a map, complete achievements or pursue rewards. Expansion Masteries remain the larger foundational systems, while season Masteries and collections deepen the setting and give established level-80 characters additional goals.
The correct story order
Play the Elder Dragon narrative in this sequence:
- Core Guild Wars 2 story. Complete the base-game narrative first.
- Living World Season 1. This begins the post-launch continuation.
- Living World Season 2. Play its eight episodes before the first expansion.
- Heart of Thorns. This is the next major expansion arc.
- Living World Season 3. It follows Heart of Thorns and contains six listed episodes.
- Path of Fire. Continue with the second major expansion arc.
- Living World Season 4. This is the post–Path of Fire continuation.
- Living World Season 5, The Icebrood Saga. Play it after Season 4 and before the next expansion.
- End of Dragons. This follows The Icebrood Saga in the Elder Dragon sequence.
This order follows ArenaNet’s current collection and story-page placement. Starting an expansion before its preceding season may leave character motivations, political developments and world changes unexplained, even though the game may allow you to enter the expansion mechanically.
Access and bundle rules from October 13, 2026
ArenaNet changed the acquisition model on October 13, 2026. Living World seasons are no longer available for individual purchase. Instead, access follows the base-game and expansion bundles below.
| Product or ownership path | Living World access included | Expansion access included |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | Seasons 1 and 2 | Base game content |
| Heart of Thorns + Path of Fire bundle | Seasons 3 and 4 | Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire |
| End of Dragons | Season 5, The Icebrood Saga | End of Dragons |
| Elder Dragon Saga collection | Seasons 3, 4 and 5, with Seasons 1 and 2 supplied by the base game | Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire and End of Dragons |
The collection page describes the first three expansions as the Elder Dragon Saga: Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire and End of Dragons. It also states that Seasons 3–5 are included with that collection, while Seasons 1 and 2 come with the base game. The October announcement confirms the same entitlement structure and identifies the Elder Dragon Saga bundle as the combined route.

These rules apply to purchases made under the October 2026 model. Older accounts may have acquired episodes under the former system, so the entitlements shown on your account or the current product page are the authority for an individual purchase history.
Do you need Living World if you own the expansions?
For mechanics alone, not always; for the complete story, yes. An expansion gives you its own campaign, maps and systems. You can use those systems without automatically owning every season that follows or precedes the expansion. However, the seasons supply the connective narrative and their own maps, achievements, Masteries and rewards.
Consider the story gaps:
- Owning Heart of Thorns without Season 2 leaves the lead-in to the expansion incomplete.
- Owning Heart of Thorns without Season 3 removes the immediate aftermath before Path of Fire.
- Owning Path of Fire without Season 4 removes the continuation that leads toward The Icebrood Saga.
- Owning End of Dragons without Season 5 omits the preceding season in the listed Elder Dragon order.
The current bundle structure reduces these gaps for new buyers, because the relevant seasons arrive with the associated packages. The practical check is not “Do I own an expansion?” but “Does my account include the season that comes before or after the chapter I am about to play?”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which purchase path fits your goal?
You want the complete Elder Dragon narrative
Start with the base game, which includes Seasons 1 and 2 under the current rules. Add the Heart of Thorns + Path of Fire bundle for those expansions and Seasons 3 and 4, then add End of Dragons for that expansion and Season 5. If the Elder Dragon Saga collection is offered on the store and its contents match the collection page, it combines those first three expansions and Seasons 3–5 in one purchase; Seasons 1 and 2 remain part of the base game.
You want expansion systems first
Choose the expansion whose system or region interests you, but inspect the entitlement list rather than assuming the title includes earlier releases. Heart of Thorns is the relevant purchase for gliding, its Heart of Maguuma maps, its raids and its elite specializations. Path of Fire is the relevant purchase for Crystal Desert maps, mounts, nine elite specializations and its raids. End of Dragons supplies its own expansion content and, under the October 2026 rules, Season 5.

You already own part of the game
Check your account’s owned products before buying a collection. A bundle can be the cleanest way to obtain missing expansions and seasons, but you should confirm whether the store offers an entitlement adjustment or whether a standalone product is more appropriate for your account. Do not infer coverage from the age of an expansion: the Janthir Wilds FAQ’s exclusions demonstrate that a newer expansion can leave several earlier releases outside the purchase.
You care mainly about maps, achievements or rewards
Look at the season’s episode and map access, not just the expansion name. Living World seasons are the releases most directly associated with their own explorable zones, achievement tracks, unique rewards and horizontal progression. The value is especially clear for a level-80 character that has finished an expansion and needs new collections or map activities.
How the content fits together while you play
Story continuity
Expansions establish the major conflict and its central setting. The following season shows the consequences: characters respond to the expansion’s events, new areas open, and unresolved threats develop. The next expansion then changes the scale again. Following the sequence preserves that escalation instead of making a season feel like an unrelated side story.
Character and account progression
Expansion Masteries and elite specializations are the foundation for new movement options, profession builds or account systems. Season Masteries and collections add narrower objectives for established characters. Because both are account-oriented progression, a season can remain useful after its episodes are complete rather than becoming a one-time story purchase.
Group and open-world activities
Expansions can launch raids and major open-world encounters alongside their maps. Heart of Thorns includes the Mouth of Mordremoth open-world boss and three raids; Path of Fire includes three raids. Seasons emphasize explorable maps, events, achievements and rewards, so the activity mix is often more focused on continuing the world and giving level-80 players reasons to revisit it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Skipping the seasons because you own an expansion: Expansion ownership does not establish season ownership. Verify the bundle entitlement.
- Playing by release category instead of story order: Follow the sequence from the core story through Season 1, Season 2, Heart of Thorns, Season 3, Path of Fire, Season 4, Season 5 and End of Dragons.
- Assuming every season is a small expansion: Seasons can be substantial, but they are episodic and do not automatically contain the expansion’s signature systems.
- Assuming a newer expansion includes older ones: Check the product description. The Janthir Wilds FAQ expressly excludes Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons and Secrets of the Obscure.
- Using outdated buying advice: Individual Living World season purchases ended under the October 13, 2026 model. Use the current store’s bundle descriptions.
- Ignoring level requirements: Living World episodes are level-80 content. A new account can own the entitlement but still needs a level-80 character to play the episodes as intended.
Bottom line for a new or returning player
Buy according to the chapter you need, not just the word “expansion.” The base game now covers Seasons 1 and 2. The Heart of Thorns + Path of Fire bundle covers those two expansions and Seasons 3 and 4. End of Dragons covers itself and Season 5, while the Elder Dragon Saga collection combines the first three expansions with Seasons 3–5. Add later expansions separately and verify their exclusions.
For a first playthrough, use the complete story order and keep every listed season unlocked. For a systems-first approach, choose the expansion that provides the movement system, maps, elite specializations or activities you want, then add the adjacent Living World content when you are ready for the narrative and rewards that connect the chapters.
