GTA 6 Writer Explains Lucia’s “Perfectly Imperfect” Character

GTA 6 writer Alexa D’Agostino says Lucia feels believable when she is written as a person with her own wants, contradictions and imperfections—not as an idealized character. She calls the result “something perfectly imperfect.” That is D’Agostino’s creative perspective, not a guarantee of how players will respond to Lucia or how the finished game will portray her.

What does “perfectly imperfect” mean?

In a LOVE Magazine interview reproduced by smallo.au, D’Agostino answers a question about writing a female lead who is “neither a victim nor a male fantasy, but a fully realised person with her own wants.” The question’s wording belongs to the interviewer; “something perfectly imperfect” is D’Agostino’s description of the character-writing approach.

Her point is that a character can have recognizable clichés and still feel real if she has her own desires and is not polished into an ideal. D’Agostino says that approach could create “a woman that can stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic.” That is her assessment of Lucia’s potential, not an independent comparison or ranking of the characters.

Who and what informed D’Agostino’s view of Lucia?

D’Agostino says she drew on women she knows and on her mother, an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, near Lucia’s fictional hometown of Liberty City. She describes her mother as “rowdy, kind, but not to take any shit,” and says she related to Lucia. She presents those as personal reference points; she does not say Lucia is a direct portrait of her mother.

How do the writers describe Lucia and Jason?

The interview frames Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval as lovers on the run across Leonida, Rockstar’s version of modern Florida. Senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries says the leads needed to complement one another and push and pull each other through the story. He says Lucia had to want a better life and refuse to let obstacles stop her from pursuing it.

Writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern describes the intended balance between the leads: “We wanted both protagonists to be vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other, and that’s what we felt made them authentic, and a great team.” This is the writers’ account of their intent; the interview does not establish how the finished game will execute it.

What is confirmed about GTA 6 itself?

Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists a November 19, 2026 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its summary says an easy score goes wrong, pulling Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida and forcing them to rely on one another. These are separate, official game details—not evidence for or against the writers’ subjective assessment of Lucia.
