It is not yet confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is ineligible for The Game Awards 2026. Take-Two has announced a November 19, 2026 release, while The Game Awards says its nominees are coming in mid-November. The official FAQ available on October 4 describes the previous cycle’s cutoff, not the cutoff for the 2026 eligibility cycle—so the timing raises a genuine question, but it is not an official ruling against GTA 6.
Why GTA 6’s release date raises an eligibility question
Take-Two lists November 19, 2026 as the launch date for Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Game Awards has announced a December 10, 2026 ceremony, and its homepage says the 2026 nominees are coming in mid-November.

That calendar is tight: the announced release falls after the expected nominee announcement. But the nominee announcement date is not, by itself, an eligibility deadline. The Game Awards’ FAQ available on October 4, 2026 gives a November 21, 2025, 9 p.m. PT cutoff for the prior cycle and says games released after that cutoff are eligible for the 2026 ceremony. It does not establish the cutoff for the 2026 eligibility cycle. Applying the prior date to this year would confuse two different cycles.
Could review copies make a difference?
The FAQ says publishers and developers may provide review copies or digital redemption codes to voting outlets to support critical evaluation before ballot deadlines. So the public launch date alone does not tell us whether jurors could assess GTA 6 in time. That allowance is not a special eligibility exemption, either: the available official material does not state the 2026 cutoff or any 2026-specific ballot instructions.

The FAQ says most-category nominees are chosen by an international jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets. Each outlet submits an unranked ballot of five choices; the five games appearing on the most ballots become nominees, with six or more possible in a tie. Those nomination rules do not resolve the missing deadline. The FAQ’s 90% jury and 10% public-vote split applies to choosing winners, not determining the nomination cutoff.
Other Game of the Year awards use different calendars
“Game of the Year” is not one universal award with one shared deadline. Each program has its own rules, dates, and entry process.

Golden Joystick Awards content director Daniel Dawkins told TechRadar: “With the hugely-anticipated GTA 6 set to launch a week after our live show, the 44th annual Golden Joystick Awards is delighted to share its most diverse and creative nominees line-up yet.” That comment concerns the Golden Joystick schedule; it is not a ruling about The Game Awards.

What to watch for
- The Game Awards’ 2026 rules: The key missing detail is the eligibility cutoff, along with any deadline-specific review-copy instructions. Check the official FAQ when it is updated.
- Separate awards’ requirements: A game may fall within one award’s eligibility window while missing another award’s voting calendar or entry deadline.
