If a Restream broadcast reaches YouTube but shows a black picture, start by checking the pre-recorded file’s format and encoding, then test the YouTube stream settings and destination. Restream’s documentation specifies file requirements and troubleshooting checks, but does not identify one confirmed cause for this exact symptom. Work through the checks below in order, using a private or unlisted test before troubleshooting in public.
1. Check the pre-recorded video file
Restream’s requirements for uploaded pre-recorded videos are the first place to check. Confirm the actual file you uploaded—not just the settings you intended to use—has these properties:

- Container: MP4, MOV, M4V, or MKV.
- Video encoding: H.264.
- Audio codec: AAC.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds.
These are Restream’s stated requirements for pre-recorded video uploads. If your file uses a different container or codec, create a compliant test encode and upload that version. Restream describes its conversion tool as a way to convert an unsupported format to MP4; conversion by itself is not a guarantee that a black-screen issue will be fixed. Distinguish required settings from recommendations
Restream recommends 1080p (1920×1080), 30 or 60 FPS, and constant bitrate (CBR) for pre-recorded videos where supported. These are recommendations, not listed as mandatory upload requirements. If the file meets the requirements but still fails, checking these settings is a reasonable next test—not proof that an optional setting caused the black picture.

2. Check the outgoing YouTube stream settings
The uploaded file and the stream sent to YouTube are two separate settings layers. Restream’s YouTube guidance lists H.264, resolutions from 240p to 2160p, up to 60 FPS, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, with 4 seconds as the maximum. It says the suitable bitrate depends on resolution and frame rate, so there is no single bitrate to apply without knowing those values.
Compare the outgoing feed with the recommendations in Restream’s YouTube streaming guide. In particular, check the video codec and keyframe interval. Do not confuse this outgoing stream configuration with the separate requirements for the uploaded source file.

3. Test privately or unlisted on YouTube
Run a short test broadcast with the YouTube event set to private or unlisted, then inspect the event on YouTube while Restream is sending it. Restream supports this as a way to check how a broadcast connects to and appears on the destination platform; see its stream-testing instructions.

4. If the broadcast will not start or reach YouTube, check the channel connection
If the issue is that the broadcast will not start or does not appear at all—not simply that a live event has a black picture—check the YouTube channel connection and event configuration in Restream. Restream’s start-troubleshooting steps include removing and re-adding the YouTube channel and resetting its stream key if needed. You can also compare with a direct YouTube stream: Restream’s help page says, “Try going live directly on YouTube without using Restream.” These steps help investigate a connection or start failure; they are not a confirmed fix for a stream that is live but displays black video. Check how the YouTube event was created
Restream says events created through YouTube’s mobile app are for mobile streaming only and are not supported for streaming through Restream. If that applies, create or select an event supported by your Restream workflow rather than trying to use the mobile-only event.

5. Add a lead-in and tail to the video
For future tests, consider adding 15–20 seconds at both the beginning and end of the video. Restream recommends this buffer so platforms have time to process the incoming stream without cutting into critical content. The guidance is about avoiding cut-off content; it does not establish that a short or missing buffer causes a black screen. Restream’s wording appears in its pre-recorded video requirements.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom

- Whether you used Restream’s pre-recorded-video workflow and the outgoing resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval.
- The YouTube event type and whether it was created in the mobile app.
- Whether audio is present, whether the source file plays visibly, and what happened in a private or unlisted test.
- Whether a direct YouTube stream differs from the Restream broadcast.
