Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M (Mature 17+) by the ESRB. The rating covers blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and drug and alcohol use. The listing also warns of in-game purchases. The game is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so parents should decide whether it is suitable and configure account controls before launch.
What age is GTA 6 appropriate for?
Under the ESRB system, GTA 6 is intended for players aged 17 and older. “Mature 17+” is the rating category, not a recommendation that every 17-year-old is ready for the game. It is a warning that the content includes adult themes and that younger children may encounter material many families would prohibit.

The rating is a suitability signal, not a setting that removes particular scenes. Allowing a child to start the game does not turn off violence, sexual content, nudity, profanity, drug or alcohol references, or mature humor. Parents who permit access should treat the game as an adult-rated title in its entirety.

A 17-year-old who is comfortable with fictional violence may still object to sexual material or explicit language. A younger teenager may be able to follow the story but not be ready for its themes. Consider the child’s ability to handle disturbing scenes, sexual references, profanity, online interactions and pressure to spend money. Set a family rule that is stricter than the platform’s minimum age if that better fits your household.

Ratings outside the United States
The published rating in this article is the U.S. ESRB rating. Other countries use systems such as PEGI, and the age category or descriptors can differ by region. Check the rating shown in your local console store and on the physical package rather than assuming the U.S. label applies everywhere.
What content does the M rating cover?
The ESRB listing identifies seven content descriptors. Each one tells you why the game received its rating, but descriptors are brief summaries rather than a scene-by-scene guide.
Blood and gore
Expect depictions of blood and injury during violent encounters. The descriptor indicates that the game goes beyond mild, non-graphic action and may show graphic consequences of violence.
Intense violence
Violence is a central part of the Grand Theft Auto format. “Intense” signals that shootings, assaults, vehicle attacks and other dangerous acts can be presented forcefully. Parents should not expect a violence-free or violence-reduced mode simply because a child account is being used.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Nudity and strong sexual content
The listing includes both nudity and strong sexual content. That combination means parents should anticipate more than suggestive jokes or brief innuendo. Sexual situations, sexual dialogue and exposed bodies may appear as part of the game’s world and story.
Strong language and mature humor
Strong language can occur in dialogue, missions and ambient conversations. Mature humor may involve sexual subjects, crime, bodily functions or other themes intended for adults. Turning down the volume does not remove written dialogue or subtitles, and content filters should not be assumed unless the publisher specifically documents them.
Use of drugs and alcohol
The descriptor covers references to or use of drugs and alcohol. These themes can be presented by characters, in missions or in the surrounding game world. Parents who prohibit depictions of substance use should treat this as a decisive reason to block access.
Why in-game purchases matter even if you approve the game
The ESRB listing includes “In-Game Purchases,” and the Xbox store repeats the M rating and the same descriptors. That warning does not tell you the exact items, prices or frequency of offers. It does tell you that spending controls belong in the setup conversation even when a parent has decided the game itself is acceptable.

Use the child account’s spending limit, purchase approval or password requirement before the child plays. Review the payment method attached to the adult account, remove saved payment details that are not needed, and check transaction history regularly. A content decision and a spending decision are separate: you may allow play while requiring approval for every purchase.
How to control GTA 6 on PlayStation 5
PlayStation 5 parental controls are managed through PlayStation Family. The child should use a supervised child account rather than an adult account, because restrictions are attached to the family member’s account.
- Create or add the child account to PlayStation Family. Use the family-management setup on the console or the PlayStation Family app, then select the correct child profile.
- Set the game age level. PlayStation provides age-level restrictions for games. Choose the level that matches your family rule; a child account below the required level should be prevented from launching an M-rated title.
- Choose what happens when the child requests an exception. Sony documents the ability to approve or deny a request to override an age restriction for a specific PS5 game. Approving one request does not require you to raise the child’s general age level.
- Set a monthly spending limit. The family controls include spending activity and a monthly spending limit. Set the limit before adding funds or allowing purchases, and review the activity after play sessions.
- Configure playtime. Playtime controls can limit when and how long the child uses the console. Set both allowed hours and duration if your household needs a hard stop.
- Restrict communication. PlayStation Family includes communication controls. Use them to decide whether the child can communicate with other players and whether other users can interact with the child.
- Check the result from the parent device. The PlayStation Family app lets a parent manage age restrictions, spending activity, the monthly limit and a child’s request for a restricted game from a mobile device.
If you want to block GTA 6 completely
Keep the child’s game age level below the title’s M rating and deny any request to override it. Do not sign the child into an unrestricted adult account to bypass the family setting. If several people use the console, verify which account is active before testing the restriction; controls applied to a child profile do not automatically protect an adult profile.

Xbox Family Settings can filter games by the child’s age and can block an individual title regardless of its rating. That second option is useful when you want to prevent GTA 6 specifically without changing the family’s treatment of every other M-rated game.

- Add the child to your Microsoft family. Make sure the child plays through the supervised account, not an adult account with unrestricted permissions.
- Filter games by age. Set the child’s content level so games above the chosen age are blocked. This provides a broad rule for the library.
- Block the individual title if needed. Xbox Family Settings can deny access to a particular game even when the child’s general age filter would otherwise allow it.
- Set screen-time limits. Define permitted hours and daily duration so access ends at the time you choose.
- Control purchases. Require approval or use spending controls for the child account. This covers both buying the game and any in-game purchases that may be offered after installation.
- Restrict communication. Configure communication permissions for messages, voice or other interactions according to your family’s rules.
- Confirm the setting on the console. The documented console path is Settings > Privacy and online safety > the family member > Content restrictions. Select the supervised family member before changing the content or game setting.
Blocking the title versus blocking its rating
An age filter blocks a category of games above the selected level. An individual-title block is narrower: it targets GTA 6 while leaving unrelated games governed by the normal family rule. Use the individual block when the child may play other titles at the same age level but not this one.
PlayStation 5 and Xbox controls compared
| Control | PlayStation 5 | Xbox Series X|S |
|---|---|---|
| Age restriction | Age-level restrictions for games through PlayStation Family | Age-based game filters through Xbox Family Settings |
| Block GTA 6 alone | Keep the child below the required level; a specific-game override can be approved or denied | Block an individual title regardless of its rating |
| One-game exception | Parent can review and approve or deny a request for a specific PS5 game | Family controls support title-level blocking; the supplied Xbox instructions do not establish an equivalent one-game approval workflow |
| Spending | Spending activity and a monthly spending limit | Purchase controls in Xbox Family Settings |
| Playtime | Playtime controls | Screen-time limits |
| Communication | Communication controls | Communication restrictions |
| Phone management | PlayStation Family app can manage restrictions, spending activity, the monthly limit and restricted-game requests | The documented setup path is on the console; a comparable phone workflow is not established here |
Both platforms can limit age-appropriate content, spending, time and communication. The practical difference is how narrowly you can target the game: Xbox explicitly documents an individual-title block, while PlayStation documents a parent-reviewed exception request for a specific game.

A parent’s pre-launch checklist
- Confirm that the local store shows the rating applicable to your country.
- Decide whether the M-rated content fits your child, independently of the platform’s minimum age.
- Use a supervised child account on the console.
- Set the game-age filter and, where available, block GTA 6 as an individual title.
- Choose whether a parent may approve a one-game exception.
- Set a spending limit or approval requirement and review the saved payment method.
- Set playtime hours and daily duration.
- Configure communication permissions before online features are used.
- Test the restriction while signed in as the child, then test that the adult account remains separate.
- Explain the household rule to the child: an approved game does not automatically mean approved purchases, chat or unlimited playtime.
What to do when a child asks for access
They ask to play despite the age block
On PlayStation, review the specific-game request in PlayStation Family and approve or deny it without changing the general age level. On Xbox, keep the title blocked or adjust the family content rule only if you intend to change access to other games as well.
They ask to buy the game or add-ons
Check the purchase request against your spending rule. If you allow the purchase, confirm the platform and region first, then keep the in-game-purchase limit in place. If you decline, do not leave an adult account signed in with an available payment method.
The child can launch the game even though it should be blocked
Check that the child is using the supervised account, not an adult profile, and that the restriction was applied to the correct family member. On Xbox, revisit Settings > Privacy and online safety > the family member > Content restrictions. On PlayStation, review the child’s age level and any previously approved game exception in PlayStation Family.
Bottom line for families
GTA 6 is currently an ESRB M-rated game for players 17 and older, with explicit warnings for violence, gore, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language, mature humor and drug or alcohol use. It is scheduled for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and its listing includes in-game purchases. Families that do not want those themes should block the title. Families that do permit it should use a supervised account, spending controls, time limits and communication restrictions before launch.
