The fastest route to a huge GTA 5 Story Mode balance is to use missions and heists for early capital, complete the required Hotel Assassination, finish the campaign and final heist, then delay Lester’s other four assassinations and invest all three protagonists’ money in the mission-linked stocks. That order gives the scripted market movements the largest possible amount of capital to multiply.
Story Mode has a finite economy. Robberies, properties, random events and collectibles can add useful cash, but they do not compete with the late-game assassination sequence. The methods below apply to Story Mode only; GTA Online uses a separate economy and different money-making systems.

Which money-making method is best at each stage?
Your best option changes as the campaign progresses. Missions and heists are the dependable source of cash before the protagonists have meaningful portfolios. Lester’s stock trades become dominant once you have a large balance to invest. Supplemental activities are useful when you need spending money or completion progress, but most are finite or have modest returns.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Method | Best stage | Capital or payout profile | Repeatability | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main missions and heists | Throughout the campaign | High; the final heist is the largest story payout | No | Crew cuts and inexperienced crew members can reduce the protagonists’ shares |
| Lester assassination investments | Mostly after the final heist | Very high multiplier on saved capital | Five missions total; four can be delayed | Timing, platform behavior and BAWSAQ connectivity affect results |
| Random events, robberies, races and side activities | Early or mid-game, or as supplemental cash | Low to medium | Finite or irregular | Not competitive with late-game investments |
| Nuclear Waste collection | After buying Sonar Collections Dock | $940,000 gross reported for the complete collection | Finite | Requires the dock purchase and completion of the collection |
| Properties and businesses | Mid- or late-game | Varies; some unlock missions or income | Limited | Purchase price can make the return slow |
The practical answer to “What is the fastest way to make money?” is therefore a sequence, not one repeatable activity: take story payouts, protect the optional assassination missions, and invest after the final heist.

Build capital through the story and heists
Why missions come first
Story missions provide the cash needed to buy weapons, property and early investments without grinding side content. Heists are the largest injections of capital during the campaign, but the amount that reaches Michael, Franklin and Trevor depends on the chosen approach, crew abilities and percentage cuts. The official game help explains that the protagonists select crew members with different abilities and cuts; choosing poorly can leave less money to divide among them.
The final heist has the highest ceiling
The Big Score is the pivotal cash event. A 2026 Vandal guide reports $201,600,000 gross for its specified Obvious approach and crew, with up to $41,664,000 for each protagonist. Those figures are conditional guide results, not a guarantee for every approach, crew selection, release or playthrough. Treat the heist-planning screen’s projected take and each crew member’s cut as the numbers that govern your save.
Before committing to a heist, compare the crew’s skill with the percentage they demand. A cheaper but inexperienced member can fail, lose loot or otherwise reduce the final amount. A higher cut for a capable specialist can be worthwhile when the alternative risks a larger loss. Keep a manual save before major heist decisions if you want to test an approach without replaying the surrounding campaign.
Use the correct Lester-assassination order
- Progress until The Hotel Assassination is required for story progression.
- Complete the Hotel trade and continue the campaign. Do not start The Multi Target Assassination, The Vice Assassination, The Bus Assassination or The Construction Assassination yet.
- Finish the main story and The Big Score.
- Make a manual save after the final heist. If you want all three protagonists available for every investment, retain them with Ending C.
- Before each optional assassination, make another separate save and invest independently as Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
- Advance time, inspect each character’s portfolio, and sell when the observed return stops increasing. Keep the pre-mission save until the initial rise and any rival-company rebound have completed.
The reason for waiting is compounding. The four optional missions move a fixed set of companies; they do not create unlimited new opportunities. Completing them with a small early-game balance leaves most of their potential unused.

Lester’s stock map, mission by mission
LCN is generally available offline. BAWSAQ relies on Rockstar services, so check that listings load before starting a BAWSAQ-dependent mission. Prices and peak percentages can vary by release, platform, market state and the amount of in-game time you advance. Use the portfolio’s current Return Percentage as the exit signal rather than an old guide’s fixed target.
| Assassination | Buy before the mission | What to do after the mission | Exchange |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hotel Assassination | Betta Pharmaceuticals (BET) | Sell the rise, then buy Bilkinton Research after its fall and sell at the recovery peak | BET is BAWSAQ; Bilkinton (BIL) is LCN |
| The Multi Target Assassination | Debonaire (DEB) | After selling DEB, buy Redwood Cigarettes following its fall and sell at the rebound peak | LCN for both |
| The Vice Assassination | Fruit (FRT) | After the fall, buy Facade and sell at its recovery peak | BAWSAQ for both |
| The Bus Assassination | Nothing | Complete the mission, wait for Vapid to fall to a low, then buy Vapid (VAP) and sell on the recovery | BAWSAQ |
| The Construction Assassination | GoldCoast (GCD) | Sell at the post-mission peak | LCN |
The Hotel Assassination
This mission cannot be postponed indefinitely because it is required to advance the story. Buy BET with each protagonist before starting it. Once the price rises, sell, then watch BIL on LCN. Buy after the post-mission decline and hold until the recovery’s return percentage stops improving.
The Multi Target Assassination
Use the large post-heist balances to buy DEB before the mission. Sell the rise, wait for Redwood Cigarettes to fall, then buy RWC and sell its rebound. Save before both the mission and the second purchase so a mistimed sale can be reversed.

The Vice Assassination
Buy FRT before launching the mission. After selling the increase, wait for FAC to decline, buy it with all three characters and sell when the recovery peaks. Because both legs use BAWSAQ, verify that the service and listings are available first.
Rank #3
The Bus Assassination
There is no pre-mission purchase. Complete the assassination, monitor VAP for the post-mission low, buy after the decline and sell into the rebound. Starting the trade before the fall defeats the purpose of this leg.
The Construction Assassination
Buy GCD before the mission with Michael, Franklin and Trevor. After the mission, check the portfolio regularly and sell at the observed peak instead of relying on a percentage copied from an older version of the game.
How to manage portfolios and timing
Invest each protagonist separately
Michael, Franklin and Trevor have separate cash balances and portfolios. Switch to each character, open the relevant stock exchange, and invest the amount you intend to risk. Buying with one character does not buy shares for the other two.

Create a pre-mission save, a save before the first sale and, when practical, a save before the rival-company purchase. Advance time by sleeping or changing characters, then check the return percentage. If the return is still rising, wait; if it has flattened or begun to fall, sell. Do not overwrite the pre-mission save until the trade has produced the result you consider acceptable.

Handle BAWSAQ outages
If BAWSAQ has no listings or prices fail to update, do not launch a BAWSAQ-linked assassination expecting the normal movement. Check the console or PC connection to Rockstar services, reconnect, reload the save and confirm that the exchange is populated. LCN-based trades are generally usable offline, which makes them less dependent on service availability.

Robberies and random events
Store robberies and armored security-van robberies provide quick cash and can be useful before the first major heists. They attract police, are finite or irregular, and cannot match the late-game assassination investments. Random events, races and similar encounters are best treated as supplemental money rather than a primary wealth plan.
Nuclear Waste
After purchasing Sonar Collections Dock, completing the Nuclear Waste collection is reported to produce $940,000 gross. It is a one-time collection and requires the property purchase, so compare the dock’s cost with your current cash needs before buying it solely for profit.
Properties and businesses
Properties can unlock missions, provide income or open other activities. Their return varies widely, and some take a long time to recover their purchase price. Buy one when its missions, convenience or completion value matters to you; do not assume every property is a fast investment.

Races, taxi work and specialist activities
Races, taxi work, Bail Bonds, Arms Trafficking and similar activities are useful for spending money, variety and completion progress. Their payouts are not competitive with a fully funded Lester sequence, so they should not replace the campaign-and-investment plan.
Story-linked market movements: useful context, not guarantees
Some campaign missions affect companies outside Lester’s assassination chain. Historical guides record Vangelico falling after The Jewel Store Job and recovering after Minor Turbulence, while FlyUS fell after Legal Trouble and recovered after Meltdown. These examples can help explain why a stock may move, but old percentage targets are not reliable current instructions. Observe the market in your own release and sell when the return stops increasing.
Can you make unlimited money in Story Mode?
No legitimate cheat creates an unlimited current Story Mode balance. Mission Replay lets you revisit a mission, but profits from replayed investments do not carry new money into the main save. The assassination sequence can create an enormous but finite balance because it uses a limited set of scripted events and the money already held by the protagonists.

Once a character approaches that ceiling, additional gains may be capped or otherwise fail to behave like ordinary cash. Keep a backup save rather than risking the only copy of a near-limit balance.
A practical checklist
- Use missions and heists to fund the early game.
- Complete the required Hotel Assassination, but postpone the other four.
- Finish the main story and The Big Score before the optional assassination trades.
- Preserve a manual save and keep all three protagonists available if you want the full sequence.
- Invest separately with Michael, Franklin and Trevor.
- Check whether each trade uses LCN or BAWSAQ before starting the mission.
- Use observed Return Percentage, not a fixed historical target, to choose when to sell.
- Keep the original save until the rise and any rival-company rebound are complete.
- Treat robberies, properties and collections as supplemental or finite income.
- Do not expect Mission Replay or a cheat to create unlimited money.
Bottom line
For maximum Story Mode wealth, take the campaign’s heist money first, complete the mandatory Hotel Assassination, postpone the remaining four Lester missions, and execute their stock trades only after The Big Score. The result is a very large but finite balance, with crew selection, separate character portfolios, market timing and BAWSAQ availability determining how much you actually keep.
