Most GStreamer timestamp errors at a YouTube loop boundary are timeline or event-state problems, not YouTube encoder-setting problems. First capture the exact warning and compare audio and video timestamps and segment information across the boundary. Then check whether the loop uses a segment seek or restarts a source or pipeline. There is no safe universal timestamp offset: the right fix depends on the element reporting the error and how the pipeline handles segments, EOS, and the muxer’s timeline.
What to check before changing timestamps
Ask for the exact warning, the full pipeline string or graph, the GStreamer version, the file container and codecs, and the loop mechanism. Identify which element prints the warning. A decoder warning about decreasing timestamps and an FLV/RTMP muxer warning may point to different parts of the pipeline.

GStreamer timestamps describe different things. Presentation timestamp (PTS) indicates when a buffer should be presented; decode timestamp (DTS) indicates when it should be decoded or processed. DTS is usually monotonic, while PTS is not guaranteed to be monotonic in every stream. A PTS sequence that moves backward is therefore not, by itself, proof of corruption or the cause of a muxer error. Inspect the timestamp actually named by the warning. See the official GstBuffer reference.

For both audio and video, record the final buffers of one pass and the first buffers of the next. Where possible, inspect values at the demuxer or decoder output and again at the muxer input. Include each buffer’s PTS, DTS, duration and flags, plus the active segment fields.

- Look for unknown timestamps (
GST_CLOCK_TIME_NONE), a reset to zero, a gap, duplicate timestamps, or an actual DTS regression. - Check whether the warning names PTS, DTS, or another timing condition, and which element emits it.
- Compare running times using the active
SEGMENT, not raw timestamps alone. GStreamer derives timestamp-to-running-time mapping from buffer timestamps and the preceding segment event; the same raw timestamp can mean something different under a different segment. See the GStreamer synchronization design. - Check audio and video together. A loop can appear acceptable on one track while the other resets, gaps, or advances differently.
Choose a loop model that matches the pipeline
| Loop approach | What to inspect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Segment seek in a continuous pipeline | Use a segment seek, handle SEGMENT_DONE, and issue the next seek. Confirm that the relevant streams and downstream elements handle the events coherently. |
The pipeline stays alive and the segment completion is distinct from ordinary EOS, but the demuxer, parser, decoder, and muxer must all support the resulting event flow. |
| Restart a file source or pipeline | Inspect the new STREAM_START, SEGMENT, flush, and EOS behavior. Verify that the output timeline remains valid for the muxer. |
The new pass may begin with restarted media timestamps; pipeline restart behavior and timestamp ownership matter. |
Segment seeking
GStreamer’s documented segment-seek pattern completes a requested segment with SEGMENT_DONE, after which the application can issue another seek. This is a useful starting point for a loop intended to keep a pipeline alive. Check the GStreamer seeking guide. Seeking may require scanning when a file lacks an index, so confirm that the source and demuxer can seek accurately.
Ensure that audio and video participate in the loop consistently. Confirm that the event sequence and the muxer’s requirements match the continuous output timeline you intend to produce.

Source or pipeline restart
A common event lifecycle is STREAM_START, SEGMENT, buffers, then EOS; after EOS, no more data is expected for that stream. If the design restarts a source or pipeline, check how the new pass establishes its stream and segment state. Injecting buffers after EOS or resetting timestamps without a coherent new event state can leave downstream elements with an invalid timeline. The lifecycle is described in GStreamer’s event design.

GST_BUFFER_FLAG_DISCONT marks a discontinuity, commonly after a seek or dropped buffer. It is not a timestamp repair: setting it alone does not make decreasing or otherwise invalid timestamps acceptable to a muxer. Use the flag only when it accurately describes the data, and verify that the segment mapping and downstream handling are appropriate. The GstBuffer reference defines the flag’s purpose.

Do not apply an arbitrary timestamp offset or force PTS equal to DTS simply because a loop starts again. The correct handling depends on which element owns or rewrites timestamps and on the muxer’s requirements. Establish the failing boundary and expected timeline first.

YouTube’s encoder guidance is a separate validation step; compliant settings do not diagnose or fix a GStreamer loop. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio (with 5.1 audio supported only for AAC), and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable details.

Once the local timeline is coherent, test with representative audio and video and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s guidance is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Stream-health feedback can help assess the ingest, but it does not establish that a loop boundary is correct.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- Non-monotonic DTS reported at the loop: Compare DTS at the muxer input immediately before and after the boundary. Determine whether timestamps reset, repeat, or regress and whether the new segment and event sequence establish the intended timeline.
- Timestamp discontinuity after a seek: Check the segment seek, the following
SEGMENTevent, and whether the discontinuity flag accurately marks the boundary. The flag alone cannot repair invalid timestamps. - Audio/video drift after repeated passes: Log both tracks’ timestamps, durations, and segment fields across several boundaries. Look for one stream restarting or advancing under a different segment mapping.
- Warning appears only at the FLV/RTMP muxer: Compare timestamps arriving at the muxer with those at upstream elements. This narrows the issue to what changed between those points; do not assume the YouTube ingest is the cause.
- Seek fails or lands inaccurately: Confirm that the source and demuxer support seeking for the file. Files without indexes may require scanning, as described in the GStreamer seeking guide.
- Stream-health warning despite clean local timing: Check the encoder format, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, and YouTube Live Control Room feedback separately from the loop logic.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded recordings, rather than debugging a custom GStreamer pipeline, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos, not camera streaming, and streams to YouTube.
