Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf your YouTube Live stream goes black exactly when GStreamer advances to the next playlist video, first locate where frames stop: the source or decoder, the switch, the encoder branch, or YouTube ingest. The available documentation does not establish one GStreamer defect or a universal fix for this exact symptom. Use the transition-time checks below to identify the failing boundary before changing the pipeline.
Find where the video disappears
Record what happens at the transition on both your machine and YouTube. A black preview alone does not tell you whether GStreamer stopped producing frames or YouTube stopped accepting them. Match local log timestamps to YouTube’s preview and stream-health status; YouTube documents health messages for diagnosing stream configuration issues (Configuration Issues for LiveStream Resources).

- Source or decoder: Check whether video buffers continue leaving the source/decode branch after the next item starts.
- Switch or selector: Check whether the selected output continues to carry buffers and whether the intended stream remains selected.
- Encoder input: Check whether frames continue reaching the encoder branch.
- YouTube ingest: Check the YouTube preview and stream-health status at the same time. Compare any reported issue with local pipeline activity.
GStreamer’s stream-selection design describes collections and selection behavior, while YouTube provides ingest diagnostics; neither identifies the cause in a pipeline whose source, switching method, and logs are unknown (GStreamer stream selection).
Check the playlist source and stream changes
Confirm that the next item actually produces the expected video stream, and that any dynamic pads are linked to the intended branch. If an item has multiple streams, check which one the application selects. GStreamer documents decodebin as a flexible playback component for applications needing more control than simple playbin playback, including playlist-oriented needs; that capability does not guarantee seamless transitions into a live encoder (Playback Components).

At the transition, record the negotiated output caps for both items. Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, and stream count instead of assuming the next file is compatible with the previous one. This is a diagnostic check, not a documented one-size-fits-all repair: the correct response depends on the actual source and downstream elements.
Trace buffer flow, state, and timestamps
Compare buffer flow and timestamps immediately before and after the switch. Look for a gap, a stalled branch, or timestamps that stop advancing at the output of the source, selector, or encoder input. Correlate these observations with YouTube’s health messages rather than assuming that a visible black frame pinpoints the failing element.

GStreamer’s streaming tutorial discusses network buffering and clock-loss recovery. Delayed network chunks can drain a presentation queue and stall playback; clock loss can require clock reselection (Basic tutorial 12: Streaming). For live input, a state change may return GST_STATE_CHANGE_NO_PREROLL. That is not, by itself, proof of an ordinary file-preroll failure. Avoid blindly restarting the whole pipeline as a universal fix: first establish which branch stopped and whether the issue is buffering, clocking, or the transition.
Isolate the switching path from the encoder and sink
As a controlled diagnostic, feed a still image or test video through the same downstream conversion, encoder, muxer, and sink branch. GStreamer’s imagefreeze duplicates its input frame at the requested downstream frame rate and has an is-live property (imagefreeze). This is an isolation method, not a confirmed fix for playlist switching.

- If the continuous test source remains visible on YouTube while switching between playlist items fails, investigate the source, stream selection, pad linking, and transition timing.
- If the test source also produces a black output, inspect the common downstream branch and YouTube ingest diagnostics.
Apply the requirements for the configured YouTube ingest protocol
First establish whether the pipeline sends RTMP or HLS. HLS-specific requirements do not apply to an RTMP pipeline.
If the pipeline uses HLS ingest
YouTube’s HLS guide specifies MPEG-TS segments, a segment duration of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments (Set up an HLS stream). Check the actual generated segments and playlist against those requirements. The guide also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments.

If the pipeline uses RTMP ingest

What the reported cases do—and do not—show
A GStreamer Discourse post published October 8, 2024 describes one user’s HLS playlist with 10-second segments and a pipeline using a compositor, x264enc, flvmux, and rtmpsink. The author reported that it worked on Windows and Android but stopped after 15–20 seconds on iOS or a MacBook (GStreamer Command for streaming (Youtube)). That report concerns a different symptom; it is not independent verification, a general result, or a confirmed explanation for a black screen triggered by switching playlist videos.
Common diagnostic outcomes
| Observation at transition | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| No video buffers leave the source/decode branch | Next-item decoding, source errors, selected stream, and dynamic-pad linking. |
| Source buffers continue, but selector output stops | Stream selection, switch state, and whether the intended pad is linked and active. |
| Frames reach the encoder branch, but the YouTube preview is black | Common downstream conversion, encoder and muxer output, ingest configuration, and YouTube health messages. |
| A continuous test source works through the same downstream path | The evidence points earlier in the source or switching path; compare caps, pads, and timestamps for the playlist items. |
| A continuous test source also fails | Investigate the shared downstream branch and ingest diagnostics rather than treating the playlist transition as the only suspect. |
Collect the details needed for a code-level fix
If the boundary checks do not reveal the failure, a useful report should include the complete pipeline, GStreamer version and platform, representative GST_DEBUG output around the transition, negotiated caps before and after it, and YouTube stream-health details. Include the ingest protocol and explain how the playlist switch is implemented. Without those details, an exact repair cannot be selected responsibly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel rather than troubleshoot a custom GStreamer pipeline, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
