Recommended Free Tools
For a simple YouTube channel that loops a prepared bhajan video or playlist, FFmpeg is usually the easier starting point. GStreamer is often a better fit when you need a programmable pipeline with multiple sources, custom processing or application integration. Neither tool guarantees a 24/7 stream: continuous operation also depends on your source, network, process supervision, recovery plan and music rights.
This is a workflow recommendation based on the tools’ documented approaches, not a benchmark. There is no established head-to-head result here for uptime, quality, cost or hardware load. Test the exact build and setup you plan to run.

Which should you choose for a bhajan channel?
| Need | Likely starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One prepared visual and a repeating bhajan playlist sent to YouTube | FFmpeg | Its command-line workflow is designed to read, filter or transcode media and send an output. A comparatively simple pipeline is easier to maintain. |
| Multiple or changing sources, custom processing, conditional routing, or integration into an application | GStreamer | Its pipeline model lets you assemble processing from elements, which can suit more programmable workflows. |
| You are unsure which one will work better on your machine | Test both candidates on the actual host | The installed codecs, plugins, encoders, muxers and output elements matter. General descriptions do not establish comparative performance. |
For either choice, check that your installed operating-system build includes every required demuxer, codec, encoder, muxer and destination element. Then test with content resembling the real stream and observe audio continuity, video behavior, CPU or GPU load, upload stability and recovery after an interruption.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 options for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed 4 seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 for audio and gives guidance of 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not evidence that either framework produces better quality. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings before configuring a production stream.

Choose resolution and bitrate for your connection
Set resolution and bitrate to a level your available upload capacity can sustain with headroom. Test the planned content and monitor YouTube’s stream health; do not choose settings from a theoretical maximum alone. Keep the intended audio channel layout in mind when selecting YouTube’s audio guidance.
When HLS is appropriate
YouTube HLS can suit workflows such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP, but it has higher latency. YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions require transport-stream segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests and no byte ranges. The developer guide also specifies playlist and sequence requirements. HLS is not simply an RTMPS output mode with a different label: confirm that the selected framework build’s muxer, sink and protocol behavior meet YouTube’s requirements. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions and its HLS developer guide.
Can FFmpeg loop a playlist to YouTube Live?
Yes, provided the media inputs, playlist behavior and output path are supported by your installed build. The important design choice is how the playlist advances and what happens when a file ends or cannot be read. Test the exact sequence of recordings and visuals you intend to use; a command that works for one file does not by itself prove that a whole playlist will loop cleanly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →GStreamer can also implement a looped source, but its pipeline must be assembled from available elements and handle end-of-stream behavior as intended. For either tool, verify that audio and video remain synchronized across transitions and that a missing, corrupt or unexpectedly long file does not silently stop the output.
How to keep a YouTube live stream running
The encoder is only one part of a 24/7 service. Plan for failures around it, including process exits, source problems, network interruptions and YouTube dropping the ingest connection.
- Supervise the process: use a service manager or other supervisor that can detect an exited process and restart it. Confirm that restart behavior works rather than assuming it does.
- Check stream health: monitor the process, logs and YouTube’s stream-health status. Arrange alerts so a failure does not remain unnoticed.
- Plan source behavior: verify playlist looping, file availability and transitions. Decide what the channel should show or play if an input fails.
- Test network recovery: reproduce dropped connections and confirm the process reconnects or is restarted appropriately. Allow upload headroom for the selected bitrate.
- Rehearse before launch: run representative content for a sustained test and inspect audio, video, resource use and recovery behavior on the intended host.
GStreamer’s streaming tutorial discusses buffering and recovery from interruptions, but that does not establish that GStreamer is more resilient than FFmpeg. No controlled comparison establishes that either tool has better 24/7 uptime for this use case.

Copyright and YouTube live rules for bhajans
Devotional subject matter does not make a recording free to use. You need to check the rights for the specific recording and arrangement, as well as for any visual material. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. Even material you have licensed may require the channel to be added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions and confirm the relevant permissions before going live.
YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
