To verify an Indian business’s GST registration, use the official Goods and Services Tax Portal at gst.gov.in. Open Search Taxpayer, select the GSTIN/UIN search, enter the identifier and the displayed CAPTCHA, then choose Search. The public lookup does not require you to sign in.

Use the returned profile to compare the GSTIN, legal name, trade name, registration status, effective registration date, business constitution and principal place of business with the supplier or customer details you were given. Treat the result as confirmation of what the portal records—not as proof that a particular invoice, delivery or counterparty is genuine.

What GSTIN verification tells you

A GSTIN or UIN lookup checks the registration record maintained on India’s official GST Portal. The public profile can show identifying and status information that helps you decide whether an invoice or business claim is consistent with an official record.

The GST Portal’s manual describes the purpose of the utility this way: “The Search Taxpayer functionality allows you to view the profile of any other registered taxpayer at the GST Portal on entering the GSTIN/UIN.” (GST Portal Search Taxpayer manual.)

This is an identity and registration check. It can reveal that an identifier is present, the names associated with it, when registration took effect, and whether the record is active, suspended or cancelled when that status is displayed. It cannot independently establish that goods were supplied, that tax was correctly charged, that a bank account belongs to the supplier, or that a business is trustworthy.

How to check a GSTIN without logging in

The public search is the fastest route for checking a supplier, customer, handwritten invoice or quotation. Have the GSTIN or UIN available exactly as supplied; copying it avoids confusing similar characters.

  1. Go to gst.gov.in.
  2. From the home page, open Search Taxpayer.
  3. Choose the option to search by GSTIN/UIN.
  4. Enter the complete GSTIN or UIN in the search field.
  5. Enter the displayed CAPTCHA exactly as shown.
  6. Select Search.

The result is a public profile; the manual says this lookup is available without a GST Portal login. If you are checking several invoices, save a dated copy of each result according to your organization’s record-keeping policy, because a taxpayer’s status or profile can change later.

Which fields to compare in the result

Do not stop at seeing a green-looking result or a matching number. Compare the returned fields with the document and the commercial information you received.

Portal field How to use it
GSTIN/UIN Check every character against the invoice, purchase order, quotation or supplier master record.
Legal name Compare with the contracting entity, tax invoice issuer and formal business documents.
Trade name Compare with the storefront, brand or trading name printed on the invoice. It can differ from the legal name.
Effective registration date Check that the registration was effective on or before the transaction date when that timing matters.
Constitution of business Use it as a consistency check against the entity type represented by the counterparty.
Principal place of business Compare the registered principal address with the supplier’s stated location, while allowing for branches or other places of business.
Status Record whether the portal shows the registration as active, suspended or another status.
Cancellation date If displayed, check whether it precedes the transaction or invoice date.
Jurisdiction and taxpayer type Use these administrative fields to spot a material mismatch, not as a substitute for identity checks.
Nature of business activities Consider whether the recorded activities are broadly consistent with the goods or services being offered.
Return-filing details Use the displayed filing information as an additional compliance signal; it does not validate an individual invoice.

The GST Portal manual lists the identifier, names, effective date, constitution, principal place of business, cancellation date and return-filing details. GSTN’s Welcome Kit also identifies jurisdiction, taxpayer type, status, nature of business activities and a return-filing table among searchable information. The exact fields visible can depend on the record and the portal’s current presentation.

Legal name and trade name: why a mismatch may be normal

A common verification mistake is treating a trade-name difference as automatic evidence of a fake GSTIN. The registration process records the legal name as it appears in PAN records, while a business can operate publicly under a separate trade name. The search profile may display both.

For example, an invoice may prominently show a shop or brand name while the GST profile returns a company, partnership or proprietor’s legal name. Compare the invoice’s legal-entity details with the profile’s legal name, and compare the storefront or trading label with the trade name. Then check the address, constitution and business activity. A difference limited to legal-versus-trade naming is a reason to reconcile the records, not a conclusion that the identifier is false. The distinction is explained in the GST registration guidance for a normal taxpayer.

How to interpret active, suspended and cancelled records

Status is time-sensitive. If the profile shows an active registration, that describes the status displayed at the time you searched; it does not certify every transaction made by the taxpayer.

Suspended or auto-suspended

The manual notes that an auto-suspended status and its effective date can be displayed. Do not rewrite a suspended record as “active” in a vendor file or payment approval. Preserve the exact status and date shown, and escalate a transaction whose tax treatment depends on the registration’s status.

Cancelled

If a cancellation date appears, compare it with the invoice and supply dates. A cancellation date after a transaction is not, by itself, a complete legal analysis; a date before the transaction is a clear reason to pause and obtain clarification. GSTN’s Welcome Kit lists status and cancellation date among the searchable information.

Unclear or changing status

For a high-value purchase, credit decision, input-tax-credit decision or dispute, use the current official record and obtain advice from a qualified tax professional rather than inferring legal consequences from a single screen. The public search is a verification aid, not a ruling on liability.

Public results versus information available after login

The public lookup and the logged-in view are not identical. The GST Portal manual distinguishes additional information that may be available after authentication.

Access route Information described in official material Practical implication
Public, no login GSTIN/UIN, legal and trade names, effective registration date, constitution, principal place of business, cancellation date when applicable and return-filing details; GSTN also lists jurisdiction, taxpayer type, status and nature of business activities. Usually sufficient for a basic supplier or invoice identity check.
After login The manual says additional information may include proprietor, director or promoter names, e-way bill history, annual aggregate turnover and tax-payment information. Useful for an authorized, deeper review, subject to the account’s permissions and what the portal currently displays.
Historical functionality references A GSTN functionality note from January–March 2021 describes additional post-login information such as Aadhaar authentication/e-KYC verification and compliance information. Do not assume those historical features are shown to every user today; verify what the current portal actually presents.

The additional fields are described in the GSTN functionality compilation and the Search Taxpayer manual. Do not request or record personal information beyond what your legal and business purpose requires.

Using GSTIN verification on an invoice

GSTN describes the utility as helpful for verifying GSTIN authenticity, checking identifiers on handwritten invoices, avoiding vendors that use fake GSTINs and helping suppliers correct reporting errors. Apply it as a sequence of consistency checks:

  1. Transcribe the identifier. Enter the GSTIN/UIN from the invoice rather than relying on a vendor’s verbal description.
  2. Check the returned legal name. Confirm that the entity issuing the invoice is the entity associated with the record, or document why a trade name appears instead.
  3. Check timing. Compare the effective registration date and any cancellation date with the invoice and supply dates.
  4. Check location and activity. Compare the principal place of business and nature of business activities with the supplier’s stated details.
  5. Check status. Record active, suspended, cancelled or another displayed status exactly, including an effective date where shown.
  6. Resolve discrepancies before approval. Ask the issuer for a corrected invoice or an explanation supported by official records; do not silently alter the GSTIN in your accounting system.

A matching profile improves confidence that the identifier belongs to a registered taxpayer. It does not prove that the invoice amount, tax rate, place of supply, description of goods, delivery or payment instructions are correct. Those require the normal commercial and tax checks for the transaction.

What a positive lookup does—and does not—prove

What it supports

  • The entered GSTIN or UIN corresponds to a profile returned by the official portal.
  • The names, dates, status and other fields displayed on that profile can be compared with the counterparty’s documents.
  • A discrepancy can be identified early, before onboarding, payment or reporting.

What it cannot establish on its own

  • That the person contacting you controls the registered business.
  • That a particular invoice was issued by the real taxpayer or relates to an actual supply.
  • That the taxpayer has paid the tax due on your transaction.
  • That goods or services were delivered, conform to contract or came from the stated address.
  • That the counterparty is financially sound, reputable or safe to prepay.

Use the result alongside purchase orders, contracts, delivery evidence, bank-account verification, communication records and your organization’s tax controls. A GSTIN check is one control, not a complete due-diligence program.

A practical verification record for businesses

For repeat procurement or customer onboarding, standardize what your staff record so that a later reviewer can reproduce the decision.

  • GSTIN or UIN entered, including the source document and date.
  • Date and approximate time of the portal search.
  • Returned legal name and trade name.
  • Status and any effective status or cancellation date shown.
  • Effective registration date.
  • Principal place of business, constitution, taxpayer type and jurisdiction when displayed.
  • Nature of business activities and return-filing information when relevant to your control.
  • The discrepancy, clarification or corrected document obtained from the counterparty.

Keep the record proportionate to risk. A low-value, one-time purchase may need only a documented lookup, while a large vendor relationship may justify a logged-in review and independent confirmation of authorized contacts.

When the result does not match the document

The search returns no usable match

Re-enter the GSTIN/UIN carefully, including every character, and complete the current CAPTCHA. Check whether the document contains a typographical error or a different identifier for another registration. Ask the issuer to confirm the number from its official registration record rather than substituting a number found elsewhere.

The name differs

First determine whether you are comparing the invoice’s trade name with the portal’s legal name. If both legal names should be identical and are not, pause onboarding or payment until the issuer explains the difference and supplies corrected documentation.

The address or business activity differs

Ask whether the invoice relates to a branch, additional place of business or a newly changed operation. Record the explanation and verify the relevant registration details; do not assume that an address mismatch is harmless or conclusive by itself.

The status is suspended or cancelled

Capture the displayed status and date, stop any automated “active taxpayer” assumption, and obtain current professional or official guidance for the transaction’s tax consequences. Do not backdate a correction or describe the record as active when the portal does not.

The portal view is incomplete

Use only the fields actually displayed. The official material does not guarantee that every historical post-login feature appears for every account, so do not fill missing information with a third-party database or an assumption.

Why the official portal should be the authority

Search engines, invoice templates and third-party databases can reproduce an identifier, but they are not the authoritative GST registration record. They may be stale, mis-keyed or disconnected from a later suspension or cancellation. Use other services, if at all, only as leads; resolve the question on the official GST Portal and retain the official result.

GSTN’s Welcome Kit mentions GST Suvidha Provider services for broader taxpayer administration. Those services address activities beyond the basic public lookup and do not replace checking the official record for a specific GSTIN.

Limits and careful use of the information

Registration data can change after you search. A result is therefore best understood as a time-stamped snapshot of the portal’s displayed record. For a transaction that spans dates, check the relevant dates rather than relying only on the status shown today.

Do not publish or circulate personal details from a logged-in view unnecessarily. If the profile exposes proprietor, director or promoter information for an authorized user, use it only for the legitimate verification purpose and protect it under your organization’s privacy and security controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where a discrepancy could affect input tax credit, withholding, contract enforceability or a dispute, involve the person responsible for tax compliance or obtain professional advice. The lookup can identify a question; it does not answer every legal question created by that discrepancy.

One-page GSTIN verification checklist

  1. Open gst.gov.in and choose Search Taxpayer.
  2. Select GSTIN/UIN search, enter the identifier and complete the CAPTCHA.
  3. Save the search date and the returned profile for your records.
  4. Match the GSTIN, legal name, trade name, registration date, address and constitution.
  5. Read the status and cancellation information exactly as displayed.
  6. Review jurisdiction, taxpayer type, business activities and return-filing details when relevant.
  7. Separate a legal-name/trade-name difference from a true identity mismatch.
  8. Escalate suspended, cancelled, missing or contradictory records before approving the transaction.
  9. Remember that registration verification does not validate the invoice, delivery or counterparty by itself.
