Value stocks are usually less vulnerable in a technology-specific, valuation-led selloff, but they are not automatically safer. Growth indexes generally have larger technology weights and more value tied to cash flows expected far in the future, so rising long-term yields or a collapse in enthusiasm for expensive AI-linked shares can hurt them quickly. Value indexes often benefit from lower starting valuations and exposure to financial, energy and industrial companies. That advantage can disappear in a recession, credit crisis, commodity shock or broad liquidity event, when value’s pro-cyclical businesses may suffer more than profitable growth companies.
The practical answer depends on the actual fund or index. Check sector weights, semiconductor exposure, valuation multiples, profitability, leverage and the methodology used to define “growth” or “value” before making a rotation decision.

What “growth” and “value” actually mean
Growth and value are not universal labels. They are rules-based classifications whose holdings and risk can change as prices, earnings and index rules change. Two funds carrying the same style name can therefore behave differently during a selloff.
Growth indexes emphasize expansion and momentum
The S&P 500 Growth methodology uses measures including sales growth, the change in earnings relative to price and price momentum. Companies with rapidly rising revenue or earnings, high expected growth and strong recent share-price performance tend to receive larger weights. In practice, that often creates substantial exposure to technology, communications and consumer companies whose valuations assume strong profits many years ahead.

Value indexes emphasize cheaper prices relative to fundamentals
S&P value scores use book-to-price, earnings-to-price and sales-to-price ratios. A stock ranks as more “value” when investors pay less for each dollar of accounting book value, earnings or revenue. The approach can favor banks, insurers, energy producers, industrial companies, utilities and health-care firms, although the exact mix varies with market prices and index construction.
Broad and pure-style indexes are different portfolios
Broad style indexes can overlap. A company may have enough growth and value characteristics to appear in both segments, with its weight divided between them. Pure-style indexes apply stricter scores and concentrate more heavily in the strongest growth or value names. Pure style can produce a more pronounced response to a factor cycle—and a larger drawdown when that factor falls out of favor.
| Feature | Typical growth exposure | Typical value exposure | Why it matters in a tech selloff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selection signals | Sales growth, earnings change relative to price, momentum | Book-to-price, earnings-to-price, sales-to-price | Rules determine which companies enter the portfolio; labels alone do not reveal risk. |
| Common sectors | Technology, communications, consumer companies | Financials, energy, industrials, utilities, health care | Sector leadership changes with the catalyst and the economic cycle. |
| Cash-flow profile | More value assigned to expected future growth | More value assigned to current earnings, assets or cash flow | Long-dated cash flows are more sensitive to discount-rate increases. |
| Concentration | Higher in broad mega-cap growth benchmarks; often higher still in pure growth | Can be diversified or concentrated depending on the index | Concentration can overwhelm the intended style exposure. |
Why technology selloffs usually hit growth harder
Discount rates compress long-duration valuations
A growth stock’s price reflects a large share of profits expected years in the future. When the yield on long-term Treasury securities rises, those distant cash flows are discounted more heavily. The mathematical effect is greater for a company whose current earnings are modest but whose valuation assumes rapid expansion over a long period. Value companies with substantial current earnings can experience a smaller multiple adjustment, all else equal.

Higher rates remove some of that support. The relationship is not mechanical: a highly profitable technology company can continue to outperform if its earnings grow fast enough to offset a higher discount rate. The rate shock matters most when investors simultaneously reduce their growth forecasts.
Technology and semiconductor concentration magnifies a theme-driven decline
Many growth benchmarks are dominated by a small group of mega-cap technology and internet companies. Their earnings can be excellent while their shares still fall if investors decide that the expected benefits of artificial intelligence, cloud spending or semiconductor demand are already reflected in prices. A concentrated index can decline even when the broader economy is stable.

BlackRock reported that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 20% in less than a month in 2026, describing it as the fastest correction since the 2000 technology-bubble burst in the market data it cited. That figure describes a specific index and episode, not a permanent rule for every technology stock, but it illustrates how quickly a crowded trade can unwind.
Expectations can fall faster than earnings
Technology selloffs often begin with a change in expectations rather than an immediate collapse in profits. A company can beat its quarterly estimate and still drop if management guides to slower growth, customers delay capital spending or investors demand a lower valuation multiple. Value stocks are also exposed to earnings disappointment, but their prices generally embed less aggressive long-term assumptions.
When value has the advantage
Lower starting valuations provide more room for disappointment
If a value company trades at a low earnings or sales multiple, a modest reduction in its expected growth may already be reflected in the price. That does not prevent losses, but it can reduce the multiple compression caused by a technology-led repricing. The cushion is a valuation characteristic, not a guarantee.
Different sector drivers can offset technology weakness
Financial shares may benefit from a steeper yield curve or resilient loan demand; energy shares respond to commodity prices; industrials follow capital spending and infrastructure activity; utilities and health care have their own demand drivers. When a selloff is confined to expensive technology, these businesses can attract capital from investors seeking less dependence on the AI narrative.
BlackRock wrote in its July 30, 2026 Target Allocation ETF model portfolio commentary: “Value trounced growth, as investors found themselves drawn to companies with less dependence on the AI narrative.” The statement describes that rotation in a particular market period. It should not be read as evidence that value will lead in every future decline.

Value’s historical advantage is conditional
Vanguard’s August 2023 analysis raised its projected 10-year U.S. value-over-growth return advantage to 3.8 percentage points annualized. That was a forecast, not a realized return or a promise. Forecast advantages can persist for years without appearing in a particular month or quarter, especially when a technology boom continues.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy value can lose during the same selloff
Value is pro-cyclical, not defensive by definition
MSCI classifies value as a pro-cyclical factor. Financials, energy and industrials often depend on economic activity, credit availability and commodity demand. In a recession, those exposures can decline together. A technology-specific shock may leave them relatively resilient, while a broad earnings recession can make them the main source of losses.
Credit stress can overwhelm a valuation discount
Banks and insurers can suffer when loan losses rise, funding becomes expensive or markets question the quality of their balance sheets. A low price-to-book ratio may signal genuine distress rather than an opportunity. If a selloff spreads from technology into credit markets, a value index with heavy financial exposure can fall faster than a profitable, cash-rich technology company.
Commodity and inflation shocks cut both ways
Energy and materials stocks can help value when commodity prices rise, but they can reverse sharply when demand weakens or supply expands. High inflation may initially support commodity producers while hurting long-duration growth; a subsequent collapse in commodity prices can produce the opposite pattern. Utilities and industrials also carry interest-rate and financing risks.
Technology can hide inside value
MSCI’s 2019 review of U.S. value performance reported that technology exposure contributed to value’s underperformance. A company can look cheap on a price-to-book or price-to-earnings measure and still be economically tied to the technology cycle. Always inspect the holdings rather than assuming a style label removes technology risk.

Compare the risks that matter before switching styles
| Risk or characteristic | Questions for a growth fund | Questions for a value fund | What to infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technology and semiconductor weight | What percentage is in software, hardware, semiconductors and internet platforms? How much is in the largest five holdings? | Does the fund still own technology companies classified as cheap? Are semiconductor suppliers or technology-enabled industrials material? | The actual exposure, not the name, determines sensitivity to a technology unwind. |
| Long-term yield sensitivity | How much of the portfolio’s valuation depends on profits expected more than five years out? | Are banks, utilities or leveraged companies sensitive to financing costs? | Rates can hurt growth through valuation and value through funding and credit. |
| Valuation | What are the forward price-to-earnings and price-to-sales ratios relative to the broad market? | Is the discount caused by temporary pessimism or deteriorating fundamentals? | A low price is not protection if earnings are about to collapse. |
| Earnings durability | Are recurring revenue, margins and free cash flow strong enough to support the valuation? | Are earnings tied to the economic cycle, commodity prices or loan growth? | Durable cash flow can matter more than style in a broad crisis. |
| Balance-sheet leverage | Can highly valued companies fund investment without issuing expensive debt or equity? | Can cyclical companies service debt through a recession? | Leverage increases downside in both styles when liquidity tightens. |
| Recovery pattern | Could a rate reversal or renewed innovation quickly restore sentiment? | Could a recovery in nominal growth, credit or commodities lift the holdings? | The catalyst for recovery may differ from the catalyst for the initial decline. |
What history says about different selloff regimes
There is no single “tech selloff” pattern. S&P Dow Jones Indices’ 2024 cross-crisis study compares sector behavior during the dot-com bust, the global financial crisis, the COVID-19 shock and the 2022 bear market. Its central lesson is that sector leadership changes with the shock: a valuation reset, a banking crisis, an abrupt shutdown and an inflation-driven rate increase do not reward the same exposures.
Valuation-led technology bubble unwind
When the primary catalyst is excessive technology pricing or speculative positioning, a lower-technology value portfolio has a logical relative advantage. The advantage is strongest when banks, industrials and health-care companies are not simultaneously entering an earnings recession.
Global financial crisis or credit event
A credit shock can make financial value holdings the epicenter of losses. In that regime, broad diversification, strong balance sheets and lower volatility may matter more than a growth-versus-value choice.
COVID-style demand shock
A sudden shutdown can damage energy, travel-linked industrials and banks while benefiting selected technology businesses. A growth index may contain both winners and expensive names, so its outcome depends on the exact holdings and the speed of the recovery.
Inflation and rapid rate increases
The 2022 bear market demonstrated why rising rates can pressure long-duration growth. Value may lead initially, but the result still depends on whether higher rates trigger recession, credit losses or a commodity downturn. A style rotation is not a substitute for identifying the macroeconomic transmission channel.

How to evaluate a real fund or index
Use the following process before moving money. It works for mutual funds, exchange-traded funds and separately managed portfolios.
- Read the methodology. Confirm whether the portfolio tracks a broad style index or a pure-style index, how often it rebalances and which ratios determine membership.
- Record sector weights. Note technology, semiconductors, financials, energy, industrials, utilities and health care. Compare those weights with the broad market rather than viewing them in isolation.
- Measure concentration. List the largest 10 holdings and their combined percentage. A “diversified” style fund can still be dominated by a few companies.
- Check valuation data. Compare price-to-earnings, price-to-book and price-to-sales ratios with the benchmark. Use the same date and definition for every fund; trailing and forward ratios are not interchangeable.
- Inspect profitability and cash flow. Look for operating margins, free-cash-flow generation and earnings consistency. Cheap companies with falling cash flow may be value traps.
- Review leverage and balance-sheet quality. Debt maturities, interest coverage and bank capital ratios indicate how a portfolio may behave if credit conditions deteriorate.
- Examine historical drawdowns by episode. Compare the fund’s behavior during technology corrections, recessions, rate shocks and liquidity events. Past performance cannot predict the next outcome, but it reveals the risks the portfolio has actually carried.
- Check implementation details. Confirm trading costs, bid-ask spreads, taxes, rebalancing consequences and whether the fund is available in your account. The available data does not establish a universal fee or availability figure, so obtain current details from the fund provider and your broker.
A decision framework for an AI or technology selloff
| If the dominant cause is… | Likely relative pressure | What to examine | Potentially useful response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expensive technology valuations falling | Growth and pure technology are more exposed | Technology weight, semiconductor concentration and valuation multiples | Reduce concentration or add diversified value only if its cyclical risks fit your plan. |
| Long-term yields rising without recession | Long-duration growth faces multiple compression; some financials may benefit | Duration of expected cash flows, bank margins and utility leverage | Balance styles rather than making an all-or-nothing switch. |
| Recession and falling earnings | Cyclical value sectors can be hit severely | Financial, energy and industrial exposure; debt and earnings sensitivity | Consider quality, profitability and minimum-volatility characteristics. |
| Credit or liquidity crisis | Both styles can decline; leveraged value may be especially vulnerable | Balance-sheet strength, liquidity and financial-sector weight | Prioritize diversification and risk capacity over a style bet. |
| Commodity-price collapse | Energy and materials-heavy value portfolios may lag | Commodity concentration and break-even prices | Use a portfolio whose sector mix matches your broader exposures. |
| Technology earnings reaccelerating | Growth can recover quickly | Revenue growth, margins and valuation after the selloff | Avoid selling solely because prices fell; reassess fundamentals and position size. |
Should you rotate from growth to value?
A full, sudden rotation is a market-timing decision. It requires being right about both the trigger and the duration of the selloff, then being right about when leadership reverses. Missing a short growth rebound can offset the benefit of avoiding part of the decline. Taxes and trading costs can further reduce the value of a tactical move, particularly in a taxable account.
A more robust approach is to set a target allocation based on your time horizon and risk capacity, then rebalance when a style becomes materially larger or smaller than that target. Rebalancing forces you to trim what has become concentrated and add to what has lagged without requiring a precise forecast. The appropriate band depends on your plan; no universal percentage is established by the evidence here.

- You already hold a large, concentrated technology position and want to diversify its factor and sector drivers.
- You can tolerate economically sensitive holdings and understand that financials, energy and industrials may fall in a recession.
- You are investing for a long horizon and can withstand years in which growth leads despite a valuation discount.
- Your chosen value fund has the sector weights, profitability and balance-sheet characteristics you intend to own.
When a pure value switch may be inappropriate
- Your primary objective is near-term capital stability rather than factor exposure.
- You cannot tolerate losses in banks, energy producers or other cyclical companies.
- The fund’s “value” portfolio is still heavily exposed to technology or distressed companies.
- You would sell after a decline because of fear and lack a written rebalancing rule.
Quality and minimum volatility as alternatives to a style bet
If the goal is downside resilience rather than participation in a value cycle, consider factors that directly target stronger balance sheets, stable earnings or lower volatility. MSCI notes that quality and minimum-volatility factors can be more defensive in some regimes. They can still underperform, carry sector biases and lag a sharp rebound, but their design addresses financial strength or drawdown behavior more directly than a value label does.
Quality screens commonly emphasize profitability, stable earnings and conservative leverage. Minimum-volatility indexes select stocks with historically lower risk and optimize the portfolio’s overall variance. Review each methodology: a minimum-volatility fund can accumulate utilities or other rate-sensitive companies, while a quality fund can retain expensive technology if its profitability is high.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating value as a synonym for safety. Value is a valuation style and is classified as pro-cyclical by MSCI.
- Assuming every growth fund is a technology fund. Consumer, health-care and communication companies can be significant, and sector weights differ by index.
- Ignoring technology inside value. Cheap technology companies and technology-dependent industrials can transmit the same shock.
- Comparing incompatible statistics. A forward price-to-earnings ratio from one date cannot be fairly compared with a trailing ratio from another.
- Using a broad index to infer a pure-style outcome. Overlap and concentration differ materially between broad and pure-style methodologies.
- Making a one-factor macro forecast. Rates, inflation, credit, commodities and earnings can move in opposite directions.
- Chasing a recent rotation. BlackRock’s 2026 observation that value trounced growth describes a particular period, not a permanent leadership change.
- Forgetting taxes and implementation. A theoretically attractive switch may be unattractive after taxable gains, spreads and account restrictions.
Answer in one sentence
Choose value over growth only when the expected problem is a technology-specific valuation or rate shock and you are prepared for value’s recession and credit risks; if your priority is broader downside resilience, compare quality, minimum-volatility and balance-sheet exposures instead of relying on the style label.
