Short answer: ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok do not have one universal privacy level. Your exposure depends on the account type, training opt-in or opt-out setting, temporary-chat mode, workspace contract, and what you submit. ChatGPT documents the clearest consumer controls and explicitly tells users to keep cardholder data out of prompts. Claude offers different rules for consumer and commercial/API use, with potentially much longer retention when improvement or safety provisions apply. Grok’s cited Private Chat agreement describes deletion within 30 days, but it is an enterprise agreement rather than a complete consumer privacy policy, so consumer controls and billing protections must be verified before relying on them.
At a glance: which service is most private?
There is no single winner for every use case. A personal ChatGPT account can use conversations to improve models unless you disable that setting, while business and API content is not used for improvement by default. For highly sensitive business work, a contractually controlled commercial or API deployment is generally easier to govern than a personal account. For ordinary personal questions, the decisive actions are disabling improvement where available, using a temporary/private mode, and keeping secrets and payment details out of the conversation entirely.

ChatGPT personal accounts
OpenAI’s consumer controls apply to individual Free, Plus, and Pro accounts. Content from those accounts may be used to improve models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone. Turning the setting off changes future use of your conversations for model improvement; it does not make the service a zero-retention system. Regular and archived chats still remain saved until you delete them, and safety, legal, or security exceptions can affect deletion.

ChatGPT business, enterprise, education, healthcare, and API use
OpenAI states that Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API content is not used to improve models by default. “By default” matters: an organization can have its own settings, agreements, retention schedule, administrators, or compliance obligations. A company should confirm the terms attached to its specific workspace or API contract rather than assuming that a personal-account setting carries over.
Claude consumer use
Anthropic describes several circumstances in which consumer chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude: you choose to allow it, the conversation is flagged for safety review, or you otherwise explicitly opt in. When one of those conditions applies, the related conversation and associated content may be included. Review the data-use choice in your Claude account and treat safety review as a separate path from voluntary training consent.
Claude commercial, API, and workspace use
Anthropic says commercial and API inputs and outputs are automatically deleted within 30 days unless a different agreement, a zero-data-retention arrangement, a safety-enforcement need, or a legal requirement applies. Workspace products can follow organization retention settings. Zero-data-retention is therefore a contractual or configured feature, not a promise that every Claude account receives automatically.

Grok and the limits of the cited Private Chat terms
The available xAI enterprise agreement says Private Chat conversations do not appear in conversation history and are deleted from xAI systems within 30 days, unless longer retention is needed for legal, compliance, or safety reasons. It also warns that no security measure or internet transmission method is 100% secure. Because that document is an enterprise agreement rather than a complete consumer Grok privacy-policy page, it does not establish consumer training toggles, how X-platform data flows into a consumer account, or consumer billing treatment. Verify those items in the current consumer terms before using Grok for sensitive material.
What “training” or “model improvement” actually means
Model-improvement use is different from simply storing a chat so it appears in your history. A provider may retain a conversation for account functionality, inspect content for abuse and safety, or use content in a process that improves future models. These are separate purposes with different controls and retention periods.
- ChatGPT: personal-account content may be used for improvement until you disable the improvement setting. Temporary Chat is not used to improve models while it remains temporary, but OpenAI may keep a copy for safety for up to 30 days.
- Claude: consumer content enters improvement processes when you permit it, when a safety review is triggered, or when you explicitly opt in through another route. The entire related conversation may be included, not only the single message that triggered a review.
- Grok: the cited Private Chat agreement establishes a history and deletion behavior, not a complete consumer statement about model training. Do not infer that “Private” means no provider access or no improvement use unless the current consumer terms say so.
If you need a firm prohibition on training, use a product tier and written agreement that state that prohibition, then confirm the organization’s configuration. A personal toggle is not equivalent to a contractual zero-data-retention commitment.

How long chats can remain after you delete them
Deletion is normally a scheduled process, not an instantaneous wipe from every backup, abuse-prevention system, or legal hold. The provider may retain a copy for safety or be required to preserve information by law.

What to do when a deletion deadline matters
- Identify the account and mode used. A consumer chat, a team workspace, and an API request can have different rules.
- Delete the conversation using the provider’s account controls, then remove exported copies, browser downloads, shared links, and local transcripts.
- Check whether the information was included in a safety review, an organization archive, or a legal hold; those paths can have different schedules.
- For regulated work, obtain the retention commitment in the applicable contract rather than relying on a consumer help-page summary.
Payment safety is separate from chat privacy
A provider can have reasonable chat-retention controls while a user still exposes a card number by pasting it into a prompt. Conversation privacy does not turn the chat box into a payment form.
ChatGPT’s explicit cardholder-data warning
OpenAI’s financial-data guidance states: “Do not use ChatGPT inputs (such as conversations, files, and GPTs) to enter, upload, or share cardholder data as defined by Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).” The warning specifically covers primary account numbers, CVV/CVC codes, and PINs. Enter payment information only on the designated secure payment page, not in a conversation, uploaded file, custom GPT instruction, or tool-connected document.

Claude and Grok billing information
The cited Anthropic consumer guidance does not specify PCI scope or a processor-specific retention period. The cited xAI enterprise agreement likewise does not establish consumer billing controls or a processor retention period. Do not assume either service provides the same payment instructions as OpenAI. Use the provider’s official billing flow, verify the address and connection before entering details, and ask the provider or your organization’s administrator for the applicable payment-security terms.
Secrets that should never be pasted into any chatbot
- Credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates, CVV/CVC codes, and PINs
- Online-banking passwords, one-time codes, recovery codes, and identity-document numbers
- API keys, private certificates, SSH keys, session cookies, and production credentials
- Unredacted medical, payroll, tax, or customer records unless your approved deployment and contract explicitly permit them
If a secret is pasted accidentally, revoke or replace it immediately, contact the card issuer when payment data is involved, delete the conversation, and notify the responsible security or privacy team. Deleting the chat does not eliminate the need to rotate a credential that may already have been exposed.

Safer setup steps for each service
ChatGPT personal account
- Open Settings and go to Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want new personal-account conversations used for model improvement.
- For a one-off sensitive question, start Temporary Chat. It will not appear in history or create or update memories, but safety retention can still last up to 30 days.
- Delete regular or archived chats when they are no longer needed. OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification, legal, and security exceptions.
- Keep cardholder data and other secrets out of every input, file, GPT instruction, and connected tool.
Claude consumer account
- Open your account’s privacy or data-use controls and review whether you have allowed chats and coding sessions to improve Claude.
- Separate voluntary improvement consent from safety-review processing; opting out of training does not mean a flagged conversation cannot be reviewed for safety.
- Remove sensitive content from the conversation before sending it. Redaction is safer than relying on a later deletion request.
- If your work requires a defined retention period, use a commercial or API arrangement whose contract states the deletion and zero-data-retention terms.
Grok
- Check the current consumer privacy policy and account settings for training, history, and data-sharing controls; the cited enterprise agreement does not answer all consumer questions.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“I deleted the chat, so it is gone immediately.”
OpenAI describes a deletion schedule of up to 30 days for regular chats, and Anthropic and xAI describe separate retention paths and exceptions. Treat deletion as a request that starts a lifecycle, not proof that every copy has vanished at once.
“Private” means no provider can access the conversation.
Private or temporary modes primarily change history, model-improvement, or routine retention behavior. Safety review, legal obligations, and security investigations can still create exceptions. Read the mode’s specific terms.
“Opting out of training prevents all processing.”
Training preference and safety processing are different. A provider may still process content to prevent abuse, enforce policies, secure the service, or comply with law.
“A business account automatically has zero retention.”
Business and API defaults can be stronger than personal defaults, but retention still depends on the plan, workspace settings, contract, and any safety or legal exception. Obtain the applicable terms in writing.

Transport encryption does not make a conversational input field a PCI payment form. Follow OpenAI’s explicit warning and the equivalent official instructions for the other services: use the designated billing page and keep cardholder data out of prompts.
What to verify before trusting a privacy claim
- Account scope: Is the statement for consumer, business, enterprise, workspace, or API use?
- Default versus optional: Is training off by default, or must an administrator or user disable it?
- Mode definition: Does “private” remove history only, or also prohibit improvement use?
- Retention clock: Is the period measured from message receipt, deletion request, account closure, or the end of a safety review?
- Exceptions: Are legal, compliance, abuse-prevention, security, and safety holds listed?
- Payment path: Does the provider identify a separate billing page and explain cardholder-data handling?
- Configuration evidence: Can an administrator export settings or obtain a contractual statement proving the selected retention and training controls?
On the evidence available here, ChatGPT publishes the most explicit consumer instructions for turning off model improvement, using temporary chats, deleting conversations, and keeping PCI data out of inputs. Claude provides the clearest published distinctions between consumer improvement use, safety retention, and commercial/API deletion terms, but its longest stated retention periods can be substantial. Grok Private Chat has a 30-day deletion target in the cited enterprise agreement, yet consumer-specific training and payment details remain matters to verify in the current terms rather than assumptions.
