Compare the same basket at the final checkout screen before choosing. Ordering directly from a supermarket is often easier for loyalty prices, retailer coupons, substitutions, and refunds. A marketplace app can expose several supermarket chains, more delivery windows, or faster service, but it may add service, delivery, priority, long-distance, membership, or item-price differences. Neither channel is universally cheaper or more reliable: the deciding evidence is the total for your ZIP code, the promised window, and how the order handles substitutions, missing items, refunds, and support.
Reliability is local. It changes with the store, delivery radius, demand, courier capacity, and the slot you select. Treat the advertised delivery fee as only one line in a larger calculation.

What you are actually comparing
There are two ordering routes, but the logistics can overlap. In a direct order, you shop on the supermarket’s website or app, use that retailer’s account, and select a delivery slot offered for your address. In a marketplace order, you shop through an app that aggregates stores and sends the order through its own shopper and delivery network or through a participating retailer’s network.

“Direct” does not always mean the supermarket employs the driver. Some supermarket sites hand the last-mile delivery to an outside courier. Check the checkout or help information for the fulfillment partner, because the courier affects tracking, substitutions, customer support, and remedies even when the order begins on the retailer’s site.

The table describes common mechanics, not a guarantee. Your address, store, account status, and order size determine the result.
How to compare the real price
Use the final amount due, not a banner promising low-cost or free delivery. A fair comparison includes every charge that would apply to the same basket and service level.
Include every cost line
- Item subtotal: Record the price of each identical item, including size, flavor, count, and brand.
- Service fee: Marketplace orders may add a percentage or flat charge for operating the order and shopper network.
- Delivery fee: This can vary by distance, order size, demand, and the selected window.
- Long-distance fee: Some orders from a farther store add a separate charge.
- Priority fee: A faster or narrower window can cost more than standard delivery.
- Membership cost: If a subscription reduces per-order fees, allocate the portion of the recurring fee that belongs to this order when calculating your true cost. Show the result both with and without that allocation if you are deciding whether to subscribe.
- Taxes and deposits: Apply the same tax treatment and any bottle, bag, or deposit charges shown by each checkout.
- Tip: Use the same tip amount or percentage in both comparisons. A tip is not a delivery fee, but it changes what you pay.
- Adjustments: Weigh likely substitution, weighted-item, or refund adjustments after delivery rather than assuming the initial authorization is final.
An app’s official fee documentation says an order may contain service, delivery, long-distance, and priority fees, with applicable charges shown before checkout. The exact combination depends on the order and address.
Run a controlled basket test
- Choose a basket you would genuinely buy. Include packaged goods and at least one item that is frequently out of stock so you can inspect substitution controls.
- Use the same store, or the closest equivalent store, in both channels. Do not compare a neighborhood branch with a distant branch unless distance is part of your decision.
- Select identical brands, package sizes, counts, and varieties. A 12-ounce package and a 16-ounce package are not equivalent even if the product name is similar.
- Sign in with the same supermarket loyalty account wherever the channel permits it. Record whether each sale price appears before adding a coupon.
- Apply the same eligible coupon or promotion. Note expiration dates, minimum spends, quantity limits, and whether the promotion is online-only or account-specific.
- Choose comparable delivery windows. If one service offers a two-hour window and the other offers a one-hour window, write down that difference instead of treating them as identical.
- Capture the item subtotal, service fee, delivery fee, priority or long-distance fee, membership effect, taxes, deposits, and tip.
- Save both checkout receipts or screenshots. Reconcile the final receipt with what was delivered, including substitutions, weighted items, missing items, credits, and refunds.
The winning channel is the one with the lower delivered cost for an acceptable window and remedy policy—not necessarily the one with the lowest first-screen fee.
Why loyalty programs and coupons can reverse the result
Supermarket loyalty pricing is often the largest hidden variable. Consumer Reports found that online grocery services differ in how they integrate retailer loyalty programs. In some cases, a shopper must enter supermarket membership information in the app to receive the same discounts available on the retailer’s own site.

Before comparing totals, verify all of the following:
- The same loyalty account is attached to both carts.
- The sale price appears on the exact size and quantity you selected.
- Digital coupons are clipped or applied in both channels, if the terms permit it.
- Any minimum spend, eligible-category, or one-per-household condition is met.
- The promotion is valid for delivery rather than pickup only.
- The app has not replaced a store loyalty price with an app-specific price.
If you cannot link a loyalty account in a marketplace app, compare the direct price after loyalty savings with the marketplace price before claiming that the marketplace is more expensive. Conversely, do not assume the direct site wins if its delivery fee or minimum order is materially higher.

Marketplace item prices are not always the same as shelf or direct-site prices. A retailer may set a separate online catalog, and a marketplace may apply its own pricing arrangement. Read the item-level prices rather than comparing only the subtotal.
A 2025 Consumer Reports investigation with Groundwork Collaborative reported that some identical items on the marketplace service Instacart differed by as much as 23% for different customers shopping at the same time. The report said Instacart stopped the implicated technology after publication. That finding describes a reported test, not a universal markup on every item or every order, and it does not establish that every customer will see different prices.

To detect a price difference in your own order, record the product name, size, quantity, and displayed price in both channels at approximately the same time. Keep the store and account constant. If one channel shows a different package or a substituted brand, remove it from the price comparison or mark it as a separate choice.
Coverage and delivery-slot availability
Coverage is determined by your ZIP code, the store’s delivery radius, operating hours, local demand, and available courier capacity. A marketplace can aggregate several supermarket banners, so it may show a store or time slot that the preferred supermarket’s own site does not. Direct ordering can still be the better option when the supermarket has a nearby branch, a dependable in-house or contracted network, and inventory or promotions unavailable through the marketplace.

What to verify at your address
- Enter the complete delivery address before comparing stores. Coverage shown for a neighboring ZIP code may not apply to you.
- Confirm the selected store and branch. A marketplace may silently switch to a farther location when the nearest branch is unavailable.
- Compare the earliest standard slot, the cheapest slot, and any priority slot separately.
- Check minimum order requirements, service-area surcharges, and whether delivery is available on the day you need it.
- Look for blackout periods, holiday restrictions, and late-night or early-morning limitations.
- Ask whether the supermarket site uses a third-party courier. The delivery network may be the same even though the ordering interface differs.
Consumer Reports noted that waiting longer for a delivery window reduced the fee in one comparison. That is a useful pattern to test, not a promise that every retailer discounts later slots.
How to measure reliability instead of guessing
No universal published statistic ranks all direct supermarket services against all grocery apps for reliability or total price. Use a six-part scorecard for the stores and slots you actually use.

Keep a simple log for several orders: promised window, actual arrival, number of substitutions, missing or damaged items, amount refunded, and time spent contacting support. A few orders cannot produce a universal ranking, but they can reveal which option is dependable for your household.

Substitutions: the controls that affect your final basket
Substitution policy is a practical difference between channels. A service may let the shopper choose a replacement, accept a suggested alternative, refund the item, or proceed according to a default rule when you do not respond.
Set preferences before the shopper starts
- Choose “refund” for items where an alternative would be unsafe, unsuitable, or too expensive.
- Specify an acceptable brand, size range, flavor, or price ceiling for flexible items.
- Enable notifications and keep your phone available during the picking period if live approval is offered.
- Review weighted items such as produce, meat, and deli products; the final weight may change the charge.
- Check whether a replacement keeps the original promotion. A substitute can lose a coupon or loyalty discount.
Review the delivered order
Open the final receipt as soon as the bags arrive. Compare every substituted item with your instructions, inspect package condition and expiration dates, and report missing or damaged goods through the channel that took your order. Photograph damaged packaging when the service requests evidence. Record whether the resolution is a refund, account credit, replacement, or explanation that no adjustment is available.
Refunds, guarantees, and late deliveries
Read the remedy terms before paying, especially when a service advertises a satisfaction guarantee or priority delivery. A headline promise may have exclusions, deadlines, or a credit-only remedy.
Instacart’s official fee documentation describes an automated credit or refund for a qualifying priority order that arrives more than 30 minutes after the end of the priority window. “Qualifying” matters: the order type, window, and other terms control whether the remedy applies. Save the promised window and final arrival time so you can check the rule rather than rely on memory.
The Federal Trade Commission announced in December 2025 that Instacart would pay $60 million in consumer refunds to settle allegations involving misleading “free delivery” claims, undisclosed service fees, automatic membership enrollment after trials, and difficulty obtaining refunds. Those are regulatory allegations resolved through a settlement, not proof that every order has those problems. They are a reason to inspect the checkout total, trial terms, renewal language, and refund process before placing an order.
In 2026, the FTC warned that online grocery fees that are unclear, inconsistently disclosed, or revealed only at the last moment can distort competition and harm consumers. For your own comparison, note when each fee appears and whether the amount changes between the cart and the payment screen.
When a supermarket’s direct site is the better choice
- The store is nearby and routinely offers accurate windows.
- Your loyalty account and coupons materially reduce the item subtotal.
- You need retailer-specific inventory, pharmacy coordination, or a promotion that the marketplace does not honor.
- You prefer the supermarket’s substitution settings and direct refund process.
- The marketplace adds fees or item-price differences that outweigh its convenience.
- You want one accountable support channel rather than determining whether the store or marketplace owns a problem.
Direct ordering is not automatically cheaper. A supermarket can charge a higher delivery fee, impose a larger minimum order, or offer fewer slots. Make the decision from the completed basket and the service terms at your address.
When a marketplace app is worth the extra cost
- You need to combine items from multiple supermarket banners or compare stores without opening separate accounts.
- The marketplace shows a delivery slot when the preferred supermarket is full.
- You need a faster or more flexible window and the priority fee fits your budget.
- Your preferred store is outside its own delivery radius but available through a marketplace courier.
- You value centralized tracking and support enough to accept possible service or item-price differences.
Pay for that flexibility deliberately. Before checkout, compare the marketplace total with the direct total for the same store, then decide whether the additional coverage or speed is worth the difference.
A decision worksheet you can reuse
Copy this checklist for each store or app you are considering:
- Address: Enter the exact delivery address and note the available store and slot.
- Basket: Record identical products, sizes, quantities, and weighted-item assumptions.
- Discounts: Sign in to the same loyalty account and apply equivalent coupons.
- Fees: Record item subtotal, service, delivery, long-distance, priority, membership allocation, taxes, deposits, and tip.
- Window: Write the promised start and end times and whether the slot is standard or priority.
- Controls: Set substitution preferences and identify the missing-item and damaged-item reporting path.
- Remedies: Read refund, credit, late-delivery, trial, and renewal terms before payment.
- Evidence: Save the checkout receipt, then reconcile it with the delivered order.
- Review: After delivery, log timing, substitutions, missing items, refunds, and support effort.
Bottom line: choose by delivered value
Choose direct supermarket ordering when its local network is dependable and its loyalty pricing, substitution controls, and refund process are clear. Choose a marketplace app when access to multiple stores, a better slot, or broader local coverage solves a real problem and justifies the additional fees or possible item-price uncertainty. For either route, compare the same basket at checkout and keep the receipt until every substitution and refund is settled.
