Grand Theft Auto VI is not an expansion of Grand Theft Auto V. It is a new, single-player-focused game set in the fictional state of Leonida, including Vice City, and launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. Grand Theft Auto V remains the released game with the established GTA Online service.
The biggest unanswered question is map size. Rockstar and Take-Two have described a broader Leonida setting but have not published an official square-mile measurement or a verified ratio against GTA V. Likewise, Rockstar has not confirmed a GTA VI online mode, its launch timing, or features such as cross-play and progression transfer. Any article presenting those details as fact is going beyond the currently published information.

Take-Two’s December 4, 2023 announcement called Leonida “home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond” and described the project as the biggest evolution of the series. The same announcement reported that the Grand Theft Auto series had surpassed 190 million units sold as of 2023. That sales figure is for the franchise, not for GTA V alone.

What GTA VI’s map definitely contains
Rockstar’s product description places GTA VI in “Vice City, USA” and follows Jason and Lucia as they become caught in a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida. This wording matters: Vice City is one location inside a larger state, rather than the entire published setting. Take-Two’s announcement also describes Vice City and locations beyond it.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
The confirmed comparison is therefore a change in geography and scope. GTA V gives players the familiar Los Santos and San Andreas setting. GTA VI moves the series to a new fictional state with a returning city name and a wider regional frame. The official descriptions do not provide a definitive list of every town, county, island or interior location, so individual locations should not be treated as confirmed until Rockstar names them.
Is the GTA VI map bigger than the GTA V map?
There is no official answer in square miles, kilometers or a percentage comparison. Rockstar has not published a numeric GTA VI map measurement, and the available Take-Two announcement does not give one either. “Biggest” and “most immersive” describe the ambition of the project; they are not a measured area comparison.
Community map reconstructions and estimates can be useful for speculation, but they are not an official measurement. Treat any statement such as “twice the size” or a precise area figure as unverified unless Rockstar publishes a map scale or a comparable technical specification. The safest confirmed conclusion is that GTA VI covers Vice City and more of Leonida, while the exact size relative to GTA V remains unknown.

Why map size is not the only useful comparison
A larger outline does not automatically mean more meaningful play space. Density, road layout, travel time, mission staging, wildlife, interiors and how often the story sends you across the map all affect the experience. None of those GTA VI mechanics has been fully documented in the official material currently available. Buyers should compare the confirmed setting and narrative focus rather than assume that a larger-looking map guarantees a particular feature set.
Story and gameplay structure
GTA VI’s confirmed protagonists and premise
GTA VI centers on Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s description says their criminal partnership becomes entangled in a conspiracy spanning Leonida. The premise establishes a two-protagonist, crime-driven story, but the published information does not specify whether players can switch between them freely, how missions divide their viewpoints, or what activities are available outside the campaign.
Rank #2
Sam Houser, founder of Rockstar Games, described the project this way: “Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.” That is a statement of creative direction, not a promise of a particular combat system, physics model or artificial-intelligence behavior.
What GTA V offers today
GTA V is the released predecessor. It provides its established single-player campaign and serves as the foundation for GTA Online, Rockstar’s long-running online service. Because GTA V has been available for years, players can buy into an existing ecosystem of missions, characters, activities and progression that has already been documented and maintained over time.
The available official sources do not support a complete feature-by-feature mechanics table between the two games. There is no confirmed GTA VI comparison for weapon handling, driving physics, interiors, pedestrian AI, mission freedom, wildlife, stealth or animation systems. Those areas may change substantially in development, but presenting a rumored difference as settled fact would mislead readers.
Single-player focus versus a mature service game
The June 2026 pre-order announcement labels GTA VI a single-player experience and lists Standard and Ultimate editions. That makes the launch proposition clear: the known product is a premium story game first. GTA V, by contrast, is both a completed campaign and the entry point to a mature online service. Someone deciding between them is therefore comparing a forthcoming narrative release with a game whose multiplayer ecosystem already exists.
Online features: confirmed facts and unanswered questions
What is confirmed for GTA V
GTA Online is the established online service associated with GTA V. Its existence, rather than any specific future update schedule, is the relevant confirmed distinction in this comparison. Players choosing GTA V today can access a known multiplayer framework instead of waiting for a new service to be announced.
What has not been confirmed for GTA VI
No reviewed official announcement confirms a separate GTA VI online mode. Rockstar has not published a launch date, player-count limit, progression system, cross-play policy, monetization model, character migration plan or relationship between a possible future service and GTA Online.
Recommended Free Tools
That means the following are all unconfirmed: a product called “GTA Online 2,” an online mode available on day one, shared progress between GTA V and GTA VI, cross-generation play, cross-platform play, subscription requirements, and the transfer of purchased items or currency. Do not make a purchase decision on the assumption that any of these features will exist.
How to interpret the GTA+ pre-order promotion
Take-Two’s pre-order release says qualifying digital GTA VI pre-orders include one free month of GTA+. The same announcement says GTA+ provides access to GTA V and other Rockstar titles through its Games Library. This is a promotion and an ecosystem statement; it does not confirm that GTA VI has multiplayer, that GTA+ is required for it, or that GTA Online progress will carry forward.
Check the qualifying platform, region, expiration date and redemption terms at the time you order. A one-month promotional benefit should not be treated as a permanent subscription entitlement.
Platforms, editions and presentation features
Launch hardware
GTA VI is scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The cited launch announcement does not list a PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch or PC version. Do not infer a later platform release from the existence of GTA V ports; wait for an official platform announcement.

Edition prices and physical packaging
| Edition | Published launch price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $79.99 | Price stated in the June 2026 pre-order announcement; taxes, regional pricing and later discounts can differ. |
| Ultimate | $99.99 | Price stated in the June 2026 pre-order announcement; the included contents should be checked on the store page for your region. |
| Physical copy | Not a disc-based entitlement in the cited announcement | The physical version contains a download code, so internet access and sufficient storage are required to install the game. |
The prices above are published US-dollar launch prices, not a guarantee of the final amount charged in every country. Store taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing and retailer promotions can change the checkout total.
PS5-specific presentation
Sony says the PS5 version uses DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech and the console’s high-speed SSD for near-instant load times. These are confirmed platform and presentation capabilities. They do not prove that every activity or gameplay mechanic differs from GTA V, nor do they establish equivalent implementation on Xbox Series X|S.
Players buying the PS5 version should use a compatible television or monitor and keep enough internal SSD space available for the download. The published material does not state the final installation size, resolution modes, frame-rate targets or HDR requirements, so those specifications remain open.

Choose GTA V if you want an available online service now
- You want to play multiplayer immediately rather than wait for a new announcement.
- You prefer a proven game with an existing GTA Online ecosystem.
- You are looking for a lower-cost entry during a sale, bundle or subscription promotion; the current price is store-dependent and is not established by the launch information for GTA VI.
- You want to finish the existing campaign before moving to a new cast and setting.
Choose GTA VI if you want the new story and setting
- You want Jason and Lucia’s story in Leonida and Vice City.
- You own a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and are prepared for the November 19, 2026 release.
- You are comfortable buying a premium single-player game without a confirmed multiplayer mode.
- You value the new-generation presentation features announced for PS5.
Keep both if your priorities are different
GTA V and GTA VI serve different needs at launch. GTA V supplies immediate access to its campaign and GTA Online. GTA VI supplies a new narrative and world, with its online plans still unknown. Owning GTA V does not make GTA VI redundant if you want the new story; buying GTA VI does not guarantee a replacement for the online service you use in GTA V.
How to evaluate future GTA VI announcements
- Check the platform list. Confirm that your console is named in Rockstar’s announcement rather than assuming compatibility from GTA V.
- Separate launch facts from promotions. A GTA+ month, cosmetic bonus or store bundle does not establish a gameplay feature.
- Look for direct wording about online play. A confirmed mode should include its name, availability, platforms and launch timing.
- Check regional terms. Prices, taxes, physical packaging and promotional eligibility can differ by country.
- Ignore unsupported map ratios. Until Rockstar publishes a measurement, treat square-mile figures and “times larger” claims as estimates.
What remains unknown before launch
- The official numeric area of Leonida and its ratio to GTA V’s world.
- The complete list of cities, towns, interiors and environmental regions.
- Detailed combat, driving, physics, AI, mission and progression systems.
- Whether a GTA VI online mode exists, and if so, its name, launch date and rules.
- Player counts, cross-play, cross-progression, monetization and migration from GTA Online.
- PC availability, final download size, resolution modes and frame-rate targets.
Those gaps are normal for a game still awaiting release, but they are important for buyers. An unknown feature is not a negative feature; it is simply not a confirmed reason to purchase.
Bottom line for GTA V players
GTA VI is the next story-led chapter: Jason and Lucia, Vice City, and a wider Leonida setting arriving on current-generation consoles on November 19, 2026. GTA V remains the practical choice for a known campaign and an established GTA Online service. The official material confirms the new setting, protagonists, launch platforms, prices and PS5 presentation features, but it does not confirm a map-size advantage or any GTA VI multiplayer plan. Buy GTA VI for its new single-player world, and keep GTA V if online play today is the deciding factor.
