GPT Image 2 is the better fit when you want to generate or edit image outputs; Figma AI and Figma Make are better suited to work that needs to become an editable design or prototype in Figma. That is a workflow distinction based on the products’ documented capabilities—not a head-to-head finding about quality, speed, or usability.
What each tool is designed to produce
GPT Image 2: generated and edited images
OpenAI documents GPT Image 2 as an image model for generation and editing, with image endpoints available through its API. You can prompt for interface-like visuals. OpenAI advises: “Focus on layout, hierarchy, spacing, and real interface elements, and avoid concept art language so the result looks like a usable, shipped interface rather than a design sketch.” This is prompting guidance for an image, not a guarantee of accurate UI or evidence from a usability or fidelity test. Figma AI and Make: imagery plus canvas-based design
Figma’s AI image features let users make and edit images within Figma products. Figma Make is presented as a way to generate realistic prototypes and refine details on the canvas. That places these features closer to an editable design and prototype workflow than an image-only output, although generated work may still need refinement. See Figma AI and Figma Make.

For a real project, compare how much control you have over iterations, whether the result stays editable, how well it fits your existing design context, and how much manual refinement is needed. The official product descriptions reviewed do not establish a controlled, direct comparison of these tools for app or web mockups, so they cannot support a universal winner on visual quality, speed, usability, or code readiness.
Access, credits, and model versions
Figma’s image-feature page says the feature is available on paid plans and requires edit access. Figma also uses AI credits shared across features; entitlements and consumption can vary. Check the current Figma AI feature details, AI credit information, and Figma pricing before budgeting. The credit help page labels its listed rates “as of August 25, 2026”; agentic-feature consumption varies with model, task complexity, and context.

OpenAI API access has model-specific pricing and limits, which can change. Consult the current model page and image generation guide for the intended account and API workflow. Do not assume API use and a ChatGPT workflow offer the same access or cost.

Keep the model generation straight: the GPT Image 2 model page lists snapshot gpt-image-2-2026-04-21. OpenAI announced GPT Image 2.5 in September 2026, so verify which version is selectable in the ChatGPT or API workflow you plan to use rather than treating 2.5 information as evidence about GPT Image 2. The announcement also reports that OpenAI’s Images 2.5 has up to 50% lower image-generation latency versus Images 2.0; this is OpenAI’s claim about those image versions, not a speed comparison with Figma AI. OpenAI also reported in 2026 that people create more than 3 billion images each week across ChatGPT Images and GPT Image models in the API. How to make the choice for your project
- Decide what must be editable. If the deliverable is primarily an image to review or use as a visual direction, investigate GPT Image 2. If the work needs to remain a design or prototype on a Figma canvas, investigate Figma AI or Make.
- Check where the work needs to live. Consider whether the team already relies on a Figma design context, or whether an API-based image workflow better suits the task.
- Confirm access and ongoing usage costs. Review the relevant Figma plan and credit conditions or OpenAI model pricing and limits for the actual account and workflow.
- Judge the result by the handoff. Check the generated screen’s hierarchy, spacing, interface elements, editability, and the amount of manual refinement needed. Do not treat a convincing image as proof of a usable prototype or working app.
