An AI PC is a computer equipped with hardware intended to accelerate artificial-intelligence tasks, typically a CPU, GPU and neural processing unit (NPU). A regular laptop may not have a dedicated NPU, but it can still run many AI features through its CPU, GPU or an internet-connected service. “AI PC” is a broad label; Microsoft’s narrower Copilot+ PC category requires a Windows 11 PC with an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).
What makes a PC an AI PC?
There is no single cross-industry certification behind the phrase “AI PC.” Intel describes AI PCs as combining CPU, GPU and integrated NPU hardware to support AI applications and on-device processing. Vendors may apply the label differently, so check a specific computer’s specifications rather than treating the name as a guarantee of a particular feature or performance level. Intel’s AI PC explainer describes the hardware concept.

What the CPU, GPU and NPU do
- CPU: The general-purpose processor that runs the operating system and a wide range of applications.
- GPU: A processor suited to graphics and parallel workloads; some AI tasks can use it as well.
- NPU: A processor specialized for supported AI workloads. It can run certain AI tasks on the device, but the application and computer must support the feature and use of the NPU.
How is an AI PC different from a regular laptop?
The practical distinction is whether the laptop includes an NPU and whether the software you want can use it. A laptop without a dedicated NPU may still run AI software using its CPU or GPU, or connect to a cloud service that performs the AI processing elsewhere. An NPU makes some on-device AI workloads possible, but it does not mean every AI feature will run locally or that every AI application needs an NPU.

AI PC versus Copilot+ PC
“AI PC” is the broad hardware-oriented term. “Copilot+ PC” is a specific Microsoft category for certain Windows 11 computers. Microsoft’s stated hardware criterion is an NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS. That figure is a category threshold for the NPU, not an independent benchmark of overall laptop speed, and it is not a minimum standard for every computer marketed as an AI PC. See Microsoft Learn’s Copilot+ PCs developer guide and Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC category page.
Therefore, an AI PC may not qualify as a Copilot+ PC. Conversely, meeting the category’s hardware criterion does not by itself tell you whether a particular app or feature will work as you expect. Confirm the exact model’s eligibility and the feature’s current requirements.

- Identify the feature. Check its current device, operating-system and app requirements. If it specifically requires an NPU, verify that the exact laptop has a compatible one.
- Check NPU details. Look for the presence of an NPU and its stated performance. If you want a Copilot+ PC, verify that the model meets Microsoft’s category requirements rather than relying on a generic “AI PC” description.
- Assess non-AI performance. Compare the CPU and graphics hardware against your everyday work, games or creative applications. An NPU threshold does not measure total laptop performance.
- Confirm compatibility. Check operating-system, application and driver support for the software you plan to use.
- Compare the rest of the laptop. Consider memory, storage, screen, battery life, ports, portability and price. The AI label alone does not establish that a laptop is the better choice for you.
