RCS is Google Messages’ internet-based messaging mode for conversations where the app, device, carrier, region and participants all support it. It adds features such as typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution media and group controls. If RCS is unavailable or someone in a conversation does not have it enabled, Google Messages can use SMS or MMS instead—and the privacy protections differ.
What RCS does in Google Messages
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a messaging standard that Google Messages can use instead of traditional SMS or MMS. RCS sends messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data and supports features associated with modern chat apps, including typing indicators, read receipts, file sharing and high-resolution photos. Google lists these capabilities in its RCS chats FAQ.
RCS is not a separate messaging app: in Google Messages, it is a mode that a conversation can use when the required compatibility and settings are in place. If a conversation cannot use RCS, messages may still go through as SMS or MMS.
RCS compared with SMS and MMS
| What to compare | RCS in Google Messages | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Wi-Fi or mobile data. Using Wi-Fi that is free to access does not add a messaging charge; mobile-data use is subject to your plan, as Google explains in its RCS FAQ. | Sent through the carrier’s text or multimedia messaging service. |
| Features | Can support typing indicators, read receipts, richer media and group-chat controls when participants and their services support them. | Typing indicators and read receipts do not work for recipients without RCS; media may be compressed by carrier MMS. |
| Compatibility | Requires RCS support and activation for the participants; availability also depends on region, carrier and device. | Can carry a message when RCS is unavailable, subject to ordinary carrier service. |
| End-to-end encryption | Applies to eligible Google Messages RCS chats, not every RCS conversation. | Not end-to-end encrypted, according to Google. |
For media sent through Google Messages, the available quality choices are HD Optimized for chat, which sends faster and uses less data, and HD+ Original quality, which sends at full media resolution. Google notes that carrier MMS compression can affect image quality; see its photo and video sending guidance.

Does RCS work between Android and iPhone?
Google says supported RCS conversations with iPhone users can include typing indicators and read receipts in one-to-one chats, group-chat management, and high-resolution photos and videos. That does not mean RCS works for every Android-to-iPhone conversation: iPhone availability depends on the user’s region and carrier, and supported features can vary across apps and carriers. Google’s RCS FAQ also says RCS chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted.
RCS requires all participants in a conversation to have it available and turned on. If a participant lacks RCS, Google Messages can use SMS/MMS instead; features such as typing indicators and read receipts will not work for recipients without RCS. A group that includes someone without RCS may be sent as an SMS/MMS group.

Is RCS available on your phone?
There is no single answer for every country, carrier and device. Google’s compatibility guidance says, “Availability of RCS varies by region and carrier.” Its reviewed help pages do not provide a complete live list covering every carrier and country, so check the app and ask your carrier if local support is unclear.
- Open Google Messages and check the RCS status in the app’s settings. Menu labels may vary by app version.
- Make sure Google Messages is set as the default SMS app, your device has internet access, and it can receive SMS. These are among Google’s recommended checks in its RCS activation troubleshooting guide.
- Check whether the other people in the conversation have RCS enabled. For a group, one participant without it can change the available messaging mode.
- If the setting indicates that RCS is unavailable or disabled by your carrier, contact the carrier to confirm support for your region, device and service.
Why did a message send as SMS instead of RCS?
Google Messages may use SMS/MMS when RCS is unavailable for you or a recipient, when someone has not enabled RCS, or when RCS delivery fails. The composer indicates the mode: RCS message means the message is being composed as RCS, while Text message indicates carrier SMS/MMS, according to Google’s RCS security guidance.

If a message is undelivered, Google Messages may keep trying to deliver it or offer the option to switch to SMS/MMS. Google describes those delivery choices in its message delivery controls. Switching to SMS/MMS can get a message through when RCS is not working, but it also changes the message’s security properties: SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When are RCS messages encrypted?
Google says that RCS chats between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted by default, provided both sides use Google Messages, have RCS enabled and send over Wi-Fi or mobile data. In eligible chats, messages and attachments are encrypted between devices. Google’s explanation of those conditions is in its end-to-end encryption guide.

Do not infer encryption from the word “RCS” alone. Google says SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted, and its RCS FAQ says chats with iPhone users are not end-to-end encrypted. RCS in a messaging app that does not support end-to-end encryption may also lack that protection.
For Google-provided RCS when end-to-end encryption is unavailable, Google says it uses TLS. Its RCS privacy information says Google uses a phone number, device identifiers and SIM-card number for message delivery and connection, and may store that information for about a month to maintain connection continuity and support temporary offline periods. This describes Google’s RCS service, not every carrier’s implementation.

Business RCS is different
Business RCS can provide verified business identities and interactive content, but it is not the same privacy case as an eligible person-to-person encrypted chat. Google warns that verified business chats are not end-to-end encrypted; businesses, messaging solution providers and carriers may manage or access content for delivery and other purposes. See Google’s RCS chats with businesses guidance.
