Verizon estimates that its Fios Gigabit tier supports up to 50 devices, but that is a service-specific planning figure—not a guarantee for every provider, router, home, or workload. The practical limit depends on how many devices are actively using the connection, how they connect, and whether the router and Wi-Fi signal can keep up.
What a gigabit plan can—and can’t—tell you
“Gigabit” describes the speed tier of an internet connection, not a fixed allowance of devices. A provider may publish a recommended or estimated device count, but it does not establish how many devices in every household can use the service without slowdowns.

For example, Verizon’s Fios Gigabit support page says the tier “Supports up to 50 devices.” Verizon also lists average wired download speeds of 750–940 Mbps and upload speeds of 750–880 Mbps. Those are Verizon figures for its service; the page says actual wired and wireless speeds vary with device limitations, multiple users, network conditions, and other factors. The 50-device number is not an independent capacity test or an industry-wide threshold. Verizon Fios Gigabit support
CenturyLink’s Fiber Gigabit disclosure, by comparison, says wired speeds can reach up to 940 Mbps and explains that connected devices share the throughput available at the service address. Wireless throughput varies with conditions and the number of connected devices. CenturyLink Fiber service disclosure

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Connected devices versus devices doing demanding work
The number of devices connected to Wi-Fi is not the same as the number actively consuming substantial bandwidth. A home can have many connected phones, smart speakers, sensors, and other devices that are mostly idle, alongside a few active video calls or streams. Simultaneous downloads, uploads, streams, gaming, or calls create a heavier load because devices share available throughput. CenturyLink’s throughput guidance
So a device count alone cannot predict whether your household will experience slowdowns. The mix and timing of activity matter, as do Wi-Fi coverage, interference, and the capabilities of the router and each device.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Why Wi-Fi may be slower than the internet plan
A fast connection reaching your home does not guarantee that every device will receive gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi. Distance from the router, walls, interference from nearby networks, the Wi-Fi band in use, router capability, and the client device’s own wireless hardware can all affect performance.

- Band and range: The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally covers a broader area but processes data less quickly than 5 GHz.
- Interference and shared wireless capacity: Nearby Wi-Fi networks can affect performance, and multiple wireless devices sharing a network can cause lag or slower responses.
- Client limitations: A phone, laptop, television, or adapter can be a wireless bottleneck even when the router and internet plan are capable of more.
Check your router and connection before changing plans
If you are choosing your own router for Google Fiber, its guidance calls for Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T) WAN and LAN ports for gigabit service, at least Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), and a preference for Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. Google Fiber also notes that distance and interference affect Wi-Fi and that wireless speeds are slower than wired speeds. This is guidance for its service context, not a device-count guarantee. - Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check the likely constraint first: whether wired ports are fast enough, whether Wi-Fi reaches the areas where performance is poor, and whether the devices themselves support the connection you expect. A new router is not automatically necessary; if coverage is the problem, placement or additional access points may be more relevant than a higher device-count claim.
If you need more wired connections
A shortage of Ethernet ports is different from an internet-speed or Wi-Fi-capacity problem. Google Fiber’s Network Box FAQ says no more than four devices can connect directly by Ethernet to that specific Network Box, and recommends a gigabit Ethernet switch when more wired devices are needed. That four-device limit applies to the Network Box hardware, not to gigabit internet generally. Google Fiber Network Box FAQ

- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
Do router connection counts predict gigabit performance?
No. A router’s advertised maximum number of connections is not a promise that all those devices can simultaneously receive gigabit internet speeds. TP-Link lists up to 128 connections on 5 GHz and 96 on 2.4 GHz for its Archer AX4400, while noting that actual speed depends on the Ethernet port, client, ISP, and environmental conditions. Those are router connection-capacity claims, not a measure of simultaneous gigabit throughput. TP-Link Archer AX4400 specifications

How to identify what is limiting your household
- Only Wi-Fi devices struggle in certain rooms: Check distance, walls, interference, and band coverage.
- Wired and wireless devices slow down during busy periods: Several active users or applications may be sharing the connection’s throughput.
- One device is consistently slow: Check that device’s network hardware and connection before blaming the plan.
- You cannot plug in enough devices: Check the router’s LAN ports; a gigabit Ethernet switch can add wired connections where needed.
