OG describes a map’s age or version; rotating describes where a map is available and how long it stays there. They are not opposite categories. An old version of a map can be placed in the rotating slot, so a map can be both OG and rotating at the same time.
The practical difference is that regular maps belong to the normal map set, while the rotating slot changes periodically and can contain old versions, unreleased concepts or deliberately unusual experiments. The developer has also warned that rotating content may be less polished and more prone to bugs because it can be built in days instead of receiving the months of work expected for a standard map.

The short answer: history versus availability
When players say “OG map,” they are usually talking about a map’s place in Gorilla Tag history: an original map, an early version of a familiar environment, or a version remembered from an earlier period of the game. “Rotating map” refers to the game’s changing content slot. The slot is a delivery method, not a description of a map’s age.

That distinction explains why the terms sometimes appear together. If an early Caves layout is brought back through the rotating slot, it is an OG version because of its history and a rotating map because of its current availability. Calling it only one or the other loses useful information.

The developer’s explanation of the rotating slot was reproduced in a Gorilla Tag Discord announcement. It says the slot exists because the team has more ideas than fit in the normal game and can hold older material, concepts that have not otherwise shipped, or unusual experiments.
There is no reliable, permanent “OG map list.” The game has changed over time, and a map’s status depends on the specific version and date being discussed. Treat OG as a version label and check the game or an official announcement for the current rotating lineup.
What “OG” means in Gorilla Tag
A historical or version label
OG is player shorthand for “original” or “old-school.” In this context it can identify an early map that was later replaced, an earlier layout of a map that still exists in a changed form, or a period of the game that players remember as the original experience. It is about provenance: which version was this, and when was it part of the game?

A careful explanation therefore names the map version or era instead of presenting “OG” as a fixed technical classification.
Why an OG label needs a date or version
Maps are not static museum pieces. Geometry, routes, obstacles and visual details can change while the map keeps the same familiar name. An “OG Forest” reference might mean the earliest Forest layout, a particular pre-update layout, or simply the Forest map that a player remembers from their first months. Without a date or version, the label is ambiguous.
The Gorilla Tag overview documents the game’s development over time, but it does not turn every historical layout into a single official OG taxonomy. Use that history as context, not as proof that one permanent list applies to every update.
What OG does not tell you
- It does not guarantee current access. A historical map may be unavailable until the developers bring it back.
- It does not guarantee polish. An old map can be stable, rough, or simply built to the standards of its period; the OG label alone does not rate quality.
- It does not describe the delivery slot. An OG version can be part of the regular set in one period and appear in rotation in another.
- It does not identify a single map family. The label can apply to an entire early environment or to one earlier version of a map.
What a rotating map is
A changing availability slot
A rotating map is content placed in a slot that changes “every so often,” according to the reproduced developer announcement. Standard environments remain part of the regular map set; the rotating slot is temporary or changeable by design. The important question is not “How old is this map?” but “Is this the map currently assigned to the rotating slot?”

The lineup and cadence are live-service details. The active map and exact schedule were not verified for 19 October 2026, so a static article cannot truthfully name what is rotating on that date. The dependable answer comes from the current in-game display or a dated official announcement.
Why the slot exists
The creator, Lemming, described the purpose directly: “This rotating map gives us an opportunity to put more awesome stuff into the game that otherwise couldn’t have made it.” The statement, reproduced in the announcement, describes a production outlet for ideas that do not fit the normal map pipeline.
That outlet can serve several different purposes:
- Old versions: a historical layout can return for players who want to revisit it.
- Unreleased concepts: a prototype or concept can be playable without being promoted to a permanent environment.
- Experiments: unusual geometry or a different traversal idea can be tested in a lower-commitment slot.
- Extra variety: content that would otherwise remain on the cutting-room floor can be experienced by the community.
Rotating does not mean “random every match”
“Rotating” describes changes to the slot over time, not a guarantee that the map changes after every round or every server join. The announcement says the slot may change every so often, but it does not establish a universal interval. Do not convert that phrase into a weekly, daily or per-match schedule.
How the two labels overlap
One map can have both labels
Imagine that an early Caves layout is restored for a limited period. “OG Caves” identifies the layout’s historical identity. “Caves is in rotation” identifies its present location in the availability system. Both statements can be true, and neither replaces the other.

The same logic applies to a new prototype. It may be rotating but not OG because it has no long history. Conversely, an old map may be part of the regular set and therefore OG without currently rotating. The labels answer different questions:

Answering “Is OG Caves a rotating map?”
It depends on the current lineup. If an old Caves version is in the rotating slot, then yes: it is an OG map that is currently rotating. If that same version is not in the slot, it remains an OG reference but is not currently a rotating map. The name “OG Caves” by itself cannot establish present availability.

Polish, bugs and why rotating content can feel different
The developer’s explicit warning
The reproduced announcement says rotating maps may be “jankier, buggier, and messier.” It contrasts a rotating map that can be made in days with a standard map expected to receive months of work. This is a statement about production time and expectations, not a verdict that every rotating map is bad.

Shorter development can affect collision edges, visual cleanup, route readability, performance tuning or how consistently a movement trick works. A rough corner may be an unfinished detail, an intentional experiment or a quirk of an older version. Players should distinguish a temporary limitation from a permanent design choice before judging the map.
What the warning does not imply
- Every rotating map will be unstable.
- Every OG map will be polished or balanced.
- A bug proves that a map is unofficial.
- A temporary slot guarantees that the content will later become permanent.
The only broad expectation supported by the announcement is that rotating content has permission to be less finished than the normal map pipeline. The actual experience depends on the individual map and version.
Movement changes with map geometry
Why labels matter less than the layout you are actually playing
Map identity changes the routes available to a gorilla. Branch spacing, wall height, open ground, ceiling clearance, ledges and the placement of climbable surfaces determine whether a route rewards precision, speed, vertical control or improvisation. A historical map can therefore feel mechanically different even when its name resembles a current environment.
A scholarly discussion from the University of Vaasa describes Forest as favoring precise branch-to-branch movement and a large desert Canyon as favoring faster, larger movements. The discussion is available in the University of Vaasa document. These are movement tendencies, not a published ranking or a player-count statistic.
What to compare when a map returns
- Route spacing: Are the next branches close enough for controlled, precise pushes, or does the route require a larger launch?
- Surface continuity: Do walls, floors and branches connect smoothly, or do gaps force a different approach?
- Verticality: How much of the route is climbing, dropping, or moving across a level plane?
- Open versus enclosed space: Open areas allow longer movements, while enclosed spaces make contact points and angle control more important.
- Recovery options: If a jump misses, is there a lower branch or wall that lets you recover, or does one mistake end the route?
This checklist is more useful than assuming that “OG” means easier or that “rotating” means harder. Difficulty follows the geometry and your familiarity with it.
Do rotating maps replace the normal maps?
No. The rotating slot is an additional changing place in the map lineup, not a statement that the regular environments have been permanently deleted. A map assigned to rotation can change later while the normal set continues to serve as the game’s stable foundation.
However, a player may temporarily see a different selection depending on the current update and how the game presents the slot. Because the live lineup is not fixed, rely on the current in-game map screen or an official announcement for what is available now rather than an old video or list.

How to find the map in rotation right now
There is no dependable evergreen answer to “What map is in rotation?” The answer changes, and the available evidence here does not establish the active map on 19 October 2026. Use a dated check:
- Open Gorilla Tag and look at the current map-selection or rotating-map display. Record the map name exactly as shown, including any version wording.
- Check the date of the information. A screenshot, video or post without a date cannot prove today’s lineup.
- Look for an official announcement. If a community post reproduces an announcement, follow it back to the dated notice when possible; the reproduced Discord discussion is available at this link.
- Separate availability from history. If the map is an early layout, describe it as OG; if it is assigned to the changing slot, describe it as rotating. Use both terms when both facts apply.
- Capture the version context. Note the game update, date and map variant so another player can tell which layout you mean.
Do not infer a schedule from one change. The developer’s wording establishes that the slot changes from time to time, but not a fixed public cadence.
Which maps are OG?
Why a permanent list is misleading
Any list that says “these are all the OG maps” needs a version and date. The game’s environments have evolved, and players use OG both for original environments and for earlier versions of maps that still exist in altered forms. A list without that context can mix different eras and make a historical label look like an official category.
A better way to describe an OG map
Give three pieces of information:
- Map name: identify the environment.
- Version or era: say whether you mean the original layout, an early update, or another dated snapshot.
- Availability at the time: state whether it was in the normal set, absent, or in the rotating slot during the period you are discussing.
That format prevents a common mistake: treating a historical nickname as proof that the map is playable today.
Common misunderstandings
“Rotating” means the map is unfinished
Not automatically. The developer allows rotating content to be rougher and more experimental, but the slot can also carry an older version or a concept that is enjoyable despite quirks. The label describes the delivery slot; quality must be judged from the specific content.
“OG” means the map is permanently available
No. OG identifies a version’s history. It does not promise that the version remains in the current game or that it will return on a particular schedule.
An old map and a rotating map are mutually exclusive
They are not. An OG version can be placed in rotation, which is precisely why both labels may be used together.

The current map can be identified from an old tier list
Tier lists, videos and screenshots become historical evidence as soon as the lineup changes. Verify the date and compare the map-selection screen or an official notice before treating them as current.
A practical decision guide for players
If you want nostalgia
Look for the version name or historical description first. If the map is temporarily rotating, its slot is the route back to that older experience. Save the date because the same map may leave the slot later.
If you want reliable practice
Use the normal map set when you need a stable environment for repeating routes. A rotating map can change or contain quirks that make a route less predictable. That does not make it unusable; it means you should treat practice results as specific to that version.

Try the rotating slot. Its purpose is to expose concepts, experiments and older material that would not fit into the regular pipeline. Expect unfamiliar geometry and keep a recovery route in mind before attempting a long movement line.
If you are reporting a bug
Record the map name, whether it is in the rotating slot, the date, the game version if shown, and the exact surface or route where the problem occurred. This separates a temporary rotating-map issue from a general issue in the regular map set.
What is and is not known about statistics
No map-specific player-count, map-size, rotation-frequency or performance figure has been published in the sources used for this explanation. That means claims such as “this map is the largest,” “rotation changes every week,” or “OG maps run faster” should not be presented as established facts without a dated, authoritative measurement.
The available evidence supports qualitative differences: OG is a historical label, rotating is a changing availability slot, rotating content may be less polished, and geometry changes movement style. It does not support a universal ranking of maps or a numeric rotation schedule.

Physical merchandise does not answer the OG-versus-rotating question. A report summarized in the Gorilla Tag overview says Bonkers Toys and Another Axion announced US stuffed toys, figures and collectibles for 2027, but no live listing or affiliate availability was verified. That announcement has no bearing on map versions or the rotating slot.
Bottom line for choosing the right term
Use OG when you are identifying a map’s original or earlier version. Use rotating when you are identifying the slot that changes over time. If an older version is currently in that slot, use both descriptions: it is an OG map in rotation. For the live lineup, trust a dated in-game view or official announcement, because neither the map nor the change cadence is permanent.
