GoPro’s MISSION 1 PRO ILS is a 197 g cinema camera with a 50 MP, 1-inch sensor and a native Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount. Its unusual appeal is also its central trade-off: it puts interchangeable glass in a tiny body, but the mount has no electronic contacts, so lens choice, focus and often aperture are manual jobs. It is weatherproof, not waterproof, and it gives up some fixed-lens action-camera conveniences.
What the MISSION 1 PRO ILS is—and what makes it unusual
GoPro announced the MISSION 1 PRO ILS on August 26, 2026, calling it the company’s first interchangeable-lens cinema camera. The body weighs 6.95 oz (197 g) and shares the 50 MP, 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor used by the fixed-lens MISSION 1 PRO, according to GoPro’s launch announcement. It accepts MFT lenses directly, and adapters can open the door to vintage, PL-mount and specialty glass.

GoPro’s September 21, 2026 MISSION 1 PRO ILS Field Guide calls it “the first GoPro in our 24-year history that lets you change the lens.” That is the company’s description of its product history, not an independently verified statistic.
The result is not simply a conventional action camera with a lens mount added. The small body can be placed in tight positions, but the lens changes the camera’s balance, coverage, stabilization behavior and handling. The ILS is most interesting to people willing to set up a camera around the lens rather than expect one fixed, automatic configuration to handle every shot.
#1 Best Overall
- 1” Sensor + Advanced Low-Light Performance: MISSION 1 PRO utilizes a 1” sensor (1.0-type sensor) that is larger than sensors found in most mobile phones and some compact cameras. The use of this larger sensor results in better low-light performance with less noise than the smaller sensors—making it ideal for capturing cinematic footage in all conditions including dusk, indoor and night shots.
- Best-in-Class Video With 8K Open Gate: 8K video delivers breathtaking image quality with 300% more resolution than 4K. MISSION 1 PRO takes it even further with Open Gate capture that uses the full image sensor for maximum height and width for the most post-production flexibility.
- Over 3 Hours of 4K Runtime + Faster Charging: The all-new 2150mAh Enduro 2 battery gives you longer runtimes than any other GoPro battery in all conditions. You’ll get over 3 hours of continuous 4K30 recording and over 5 hours of 1080p30 recording on a single charge while improved heat management helps prevent thermal shutdown. It’s also capable of rapid charging so there’s less downtime and more production time.
- 50MP Photos + 44MP Frame Grabs: MISSION 1 PRO takes up to 50MP photos in Single, Interval and Burst modes while giving you the option to let AI automatically adjust settings for night and low-light shots. You can also grab stunning photos up to 44MP from 4:3 8K videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- What's Included: MISSION 1 PRO Camera, Enduro 2 Battery, Removeable Lens Hood, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
Which lenses work with the MFT mount?
The mount is mechanically MFT, but physical fit alone does not make a lens functional. There are no electronic contacts, so the lens must focus mechanically and must have a manual aperture ring or a fixed aperture of f/4.5 or faster (a lower f-number). Lenses that focus only by wire will not focus, and a lens whose aperture depends on electronic control remains wide open. GoPro says this rules out most modern autofocus MFT lenses.
Check these requirements before buying or adapting a lens
- Focus: Choose a lens with a mechanical manual-focus ring. Electronic focus-by-wire is not supported.
- Aperture: Use a lens with a mechanically controlled aperture or a fixed aperture of f/4.5 or faster. Electronic-only aperture control will not work through this mount.
- Image coverage: The sensor is Type 1-inch, approximately 13 × 10 mm. MFT lenses cover a larger image area; 16 mm and Super 16 mm cinema lenses may vignette or fail to cover the sensor unless the image is cropped or scaled.
- Physical support: A heavy lens, adapter, or high-vibration setup may need support. GoPro recommends considering support for lenses above roughly 250 g and for lighter lenses in dynamic use.
MFT’s short flange distance makes adaptation to some vintage and PL cinema lenses possible, but an adapter adds weight and does not remove the manual-operation or coverage requirements. GoPro names the SmallRig 15mm LWS Universal Lens Support as one support option in its guide.

If you are asking whether a Sony E-mount lens can be used, the native mount is MFT. A cross-mount adapter would need to provide the correct physical fit and flange distance, and the lens would still need to operate manually. GoPro’s guide does not verify a specific E-mount adapter, so compatibility should not be assumed.

What the camera keeps, and what it gives up
GoPro says the ILS shares the MISSION series’ 50 MP, 1-inch sensor, GP3 processor, 8K and 4K Open Gate capture, slow-motion range, runtime and low-light performance. It adds Focus Assist, Focus Peaking, lens profiles that tune stabilization to focal length, and the Mission Monitor app. Those tools support deliberate lens-based shooting, but they do not turn a manual lens into an autofocus lens.

| Capability | MISSION 1 PRO ILS | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Lens choice | Interchangeable MFT lenses; adapters may enable other lens mounts | More choice in focal length and character, with compatibility and setup checks for each lens |
| Focus and aperture operation | Manual lens controls required; no electronic mount contacts | Plan focus and exposure rather than relying on lens electronics |
| Protection | Weatherproof, not designed for submersion | Not the choice for underwater action-camera use; Dive mode and Underwater Image Tuning are absent |
| Framing assistance | No subject tracking and no Horizon Lock | Do not expect the fixed-lens model’s tracking or horizon behavior |
| Stabilization | Lens profiles tune stabilization to focal length | Results depend on lens and motion; a profile does not guarantee the same steadiness as a fixed-lens setup |
That list captures the core trade: lens flexibility replaces some of the convenience that makes a fixed-lens action camera easy to use. The official guide specifically identifies the lack of submersion capability, Dive mode, Underwater Image Tuning, subject tracking and Horizon Lock.
How stabilization and handling may change with a lens
Digital Camera World reviewer Hillary K. Grigonis found HyperSmooth useful with interchangeable lenses, but reported that it was not as steady as the fixed-lens model in some situations, with some edge wobble. The reviewer suggested a gimbal for fast run-and-gun movement. This is a hands-on reviewer assessment, not a universal stabilization measurement.

The same review found the small body useful for placing the camera at tight angles, while noting that the lens determines whether a particular position is practical. A compact body does not make a large lens-and-adapter combination compact, and the leverage of a long or heavy setup can make support important. For static shots, controlled movement or unusual mounting positions, the body’s small size may be more useful than it is for fast handheld action.

GoPro’s 2026 pricing announcement listed an MSRP of $699.99 and a price of $599.99 for existing GoPro subscribers. Those are launch-era announced prices, not confirmation of what the camera currently costs. Digital Camera World described a launch price of $699 and notes that the buyer also needs a lens. The body price therefore does not represent the cost of a ready-to-shoot camera system.

Depending on the lens and shooting style, a complete setup may also call for an adapter or lens support. Those are conditional needs, not required accessories for every user; the essential extra is a compatible lens.
Who should consider the ILS?
It makes sense if you want
- A very small camera body with the option to choose focal length and lens character.
- A manual-focus workflow and the ability to build a setup around MFT or adapted glass.
- Unusual camera placement where a compact body matters more than the convenience of a sealed fixed-lens system.
It is a poor fit if you need
- Reliable underwater use or the fixed-lens camera’s dedicated underwater features.
- Autofocus through modern electronically controlled MFT lenses.
- Subject tracking, Horizon Lock or the simplest possible run-and-gun setup.
- A complete system at the body-only price, without separately selecting and paying for a lens.
The MISSION 1 PRO ILS is best understood as a specialist camera in an action-camera-sized body: flexible when the lens, support and manual workflow suit the shot, but less turnkey than a fixed-lens GoPro. Its appeal is not that it removes the compromises of a small camera; it gives lens-focused shooters a new way to work within them.
