Android’s 3-button navigation is often the better fit if you want visible, predictable controls or find edge and swipe gestures difficult. Gesture navigation is a capable alternative, but Google’s guidance does not establish that either mode is faster or universally preferable. Choose based on how you use your phone, then switch modes in Settings to try the other.
What changes between gesture and 3-button navigation?
Gesture navigation replaces dedicated controls with swipes. In 3-button navigation, separate Back, Home, and Overview or Recents controls stay available at the bottom of the screen. Google documents both options in its Android navigation guide.

When 3-button navigation is the more practical choice
You want controls you can see and tap
The buttons make the main actions explicit: Back, Home, and app switching each have a dedicated target. That can be easier to learn than remembering where a gesture starts, particularly if you use these controls only occasionally.

Precise gestures are difficult
Google recommends 3-button navigation for people with limited dexterity or who struggle to perform precise gestures. That is an accessibility recommendation, not a claim that buttons are best for every user.

Edge swipes conflict with your apps or case
Gesture Back begins at either screen edge, while some apps use horizontal swipes for their own controls. A case can also make an edge swipe harder to start. Google says increasing gesture sensitivity may help with a case, but higher sensitivity can interfere with app gestures at the screen edge. If the adjustment makes an app harder to use, return to the prior sensitivity or choose 3-button navigation.
When gesture navigation may suit you better
Gestures may feel natural if you already use them reliably and prefer swiping over tapping dedicated controls. For horizontal scrolling, begin farther into the screen rather than at the edge; Google distinguishes that motion from the edge swipe used for Back. The available documentation does not quantify speed, error rates, personal preference, screen-space savings, or battery impact, so those are not grounds for a universal winner.

How to switch navigation modes
- Open Settings and search for Navigation mode.
- On Pixel phones, open System > Navigation mode. On some other devices, the path is System > Gestures > Navigation mode.
- Select gesture navigation or 3-button navigation. If the named sections are missing, check your manufacturer’s instructions; labels and availability vary by device and Android version.
On supported settings screens, you may also be able to reorder the 3-button controls.
