Short answer: Google’s SynthID check looks for an imperceptible watermark associated with Google AI and supported partners. C2PA Content Credentials are signed records that can describe an asset’s creation and editing history. A positive SynthID result supports the narrower conclusion that Google AI created or edited all or part of the checked media. A valid C2PA record supports the integrity of the provenance claims attached to that file. Neither system is a universal AI detector, and neither can establish that the scene in an image really happened.
A missing watermark is not proof of human authorship. Missing or invalid credentials are not proof that a file is fake. Treat both as evidence about a particular signal or record, then verify the underlying event, identity and context separately.

The two checks answer different questions
“Was this image made with AI?” sounds like one question, but provenance tools split it into narrower, testable questions. SynthID asks whether a supported Google-associated watermark can be found. C2PA asks whether a file carries a signed provenance record whose claims and asset binding pass the relevant validation checks.
| System | Primary signal | A positive result supports | A negative or missing result does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google SynthID | Imperceptible watermark embedded by supported Google AI systems and partners | According to Google, all or part of the image or video was created or edited by Google AI | That the file is camera-original, human-made, authentic, or free of non-Google AI edits |
| C2PA Content Credentials | Signed provenance assertions, a claim and a digital signature | The signed creation or editing information is associated with the asset and passes applicable integrity and signature checks | That the depicted event is true, that the signer is the person a reader assumes, or that every historical edit is recorded |
The distinction matters when a platform, newsroom or investigator describes a result. “SynthID detected” is a statement about a Google watermark. “Valid C2PA credentials” is a statement about signed provenance data. Neither phrase should be shortened to “AI” or “real” without the qualifying context.

What Google SynthID can verify
It checks for a Google-associated watermark
SynthID embeds an imperceptible watermark in content made or edited with supported Google AI systems. Google’s verifier looks for that signal in the submitted media. Google’s help guidance says that when the watermark is detected, all or part of an image or video was created or edited by Google AI.
That wording deliberately covers partial involvement. An image can contain ordinary camera pixels, human retouching and a Google-generated region; a detection result does not, by itself, divide the file into those portions or quantify how much AI work occurred. The safe claim is limited to Google AI creation or editing somewhere in the checked media.
Its coverage is tied to supported systems
Google describes a public SynthID Detector for supported content made with Google AI or partner systems. “Supported” is the operative word: the detector is not presented as a universal classifier for every image generator, editing application or model. A watermark from another vendor, an unwatermarked AI workflow or a file whose relevant signal is unavailable can produce no SynthID finding.
Google also documents SynthID verification in Gemini. The exact app, web, account, format and regional availability can change, so use the current Google help instructions shown for your client rather than assuming that a feature visible to one account appears identically everywhere. The existence of a Gemini verification option does not expand the detector into a general-purpose authenticity test.
What “not detected” means
A negative result means the verifier did not find the supported Google watermark in the material it could inspect. It does not establish that a person made the image, that a camera captured it without editing, or that another AI system was not involved. If the question is “could this have been made by any AI tool?”, SynthID alone cannot answer it.

What C2PA Content Credentials can verify
A signed record of provenance
C2PA is an industry technical standard for certifying the source and history, or provenance, of digital media. A Content Credential contains provenance assertions, a claim and a digital signature. Those assertions can describe an asset’s creation or editing actions, depending on what the participating software records.
When validation succeeds, the checker can establish that the signed information is associated with the asset and that the relevant integrity and signature mechanisms have passed under the specification’s trust model. In practical terms, a valid record gives you a tamper-evident account of what the signer says happened to the file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt does not make a truth judgment
C2PA records describe provenance, not reality. A credential can say that a camera created a file, that an editor changed it, or that a generative tool contributed an element. It cannot determine whether the photographed event actually occurred, whether a caption is honest, or whether a person named in a claim is independently authenticated beyond the applicable trust relationships.
The C2PA consumer guidance states: “The C2PA specifications do not provide value judgments about the truth or falsehood of digital assets.” That is a scope boundary, not a minor disclaimer. A perfectly valid signature can accompany a misleading scene, a staged event or an inaccurate description.
Adoption is optional
Google says it uses C2PA Content Credentials in a growing number of generative-media tools to show how media was created and modified. This illustrates how the standard can work across products, but it does not mean every camera, editor, social network or AI service emits credentials. A file may have provenance elsewhere even when a particular checker finds no record in the copy you received.

How to check an image with SynthID
The available interface and supported formats are product details that can change. The following procedure describes the decision flow, while the current Google help page should be treated as the authority for access and file requirements at the time you use it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open an official Google verification route. Use the current SynthID Detector entry or the Gemini verification feature documented by Google. Confirm that the service is available for your account, location and type of file.
- Submit the original file you want to assess. Avoid evaluating a screenshot or a re-encoded copy when the original is available. Keep a note of which file was submitted, because a result applies only to the material the verifier received.
- Wait for the detector’s finding. The service may report that a SynthID watermark was detected or that no supported watermark was found. Do not convert either status into a broader statement about all AI systems.
- Record the exact wording and date. Save the result with the file name and time. Google’s wording about a detection is the appropriate description when you publish or share the finding.
- Investigate outside the watermark check. If the image is being used as evidence of an event, verify the location, date, source, reverse-image history and independent reporting. A SynthID result cannot supply those facts.
If the interface is unavailable, refuses the format or produces no interpretable result, that is an access or coverage limitation—not evidence that the image is human-made. Do not retry indefinitely and then present a non-result as a verdict.
How to inspect C2PA Content Credentials
C2PA validation is likewise dependent on the file and the tool used to read it. A credential can be stripped from a derivative copy, and a checker may not support every implementation. Use a validator that identifies itself and reports whether the claim, signature and asset association passed.
- Obtain the highest-quality available file. Ask for the original upload or download rather than a screen capture. Preserve the bytes you inspected so another reviewer can reproduce the check.
- Open a C2PA-aware viewer or validator. Look for a Content Credentials or provenance panel in the software handling the image. The interface should distinguish a valid record from an absent, invalid or unverifiable one.
- Read the claim, not just the badge. Note the stated creator or tool, creation action, editing actions and timestamps when present. These are assertions made by the signing workflow; they are not automatic findings by the validator.
- Check signature and asset binding status. A valid result should indicate that the digital signature and the relationship between the record and this file passed the relevant checks. If the record is invalid or cannot be verified, report that status precisely.
- Look for gaps in the history. Credentials can describe only the actions recorded by participating tools. An unrecorded step, an earlier copy without credentials or an external event may be outside the chain.
- Compare the provenance with independent evidence. Confirm that names, dates, location and event descriptions make sense. Provenance integrity does not authenticate every factual assertion in the image’s caption.
“No credentials found” has a narrow meaning: the checker did not find credentials it could validate in that file or through the available mechanism. C2PA specifically cautions against treating that absence as a reason by itself to distrust the asset.
Interpreting combinations of results
Using both checks can narrow uncertainty, but it does not turn them into a universal detector. The following matrix keeps each combination within what the systems actually establish.

| Detected | Valid credentials | Google’s supported watermark was found, and the signed provenance record passed applicable checks. The record may explain which tool or action was signed. | Do the signed claims and independent evidence support the story being told about the scene? |
| Detected | No credentials or unverifiable credentials | There is Google AI creation or editing evidence under Google’s guidance, but no usable C2PA history was established for this copy. | What portion was generated or edited, and can the file’s source and context be corroborated? |
| Not detected | Valid credentials | No supported Google watermark was found, while a signed provenance record is available. The record could describe camera capture, human editing or another tool. | What exactly do the claims say, who signed them and what steps are outside the recorded chain? |
| Not detected | No credentials found | Neither supported signal was established. The image may be human-made, made with another AI system, edited, stripped of metadata or simply outside the tools’ coverage. | Use source verification, contextual investigation and independent reporting rather than inferring authorship. |
This matrix is about evidence handling, not confidence scoring. The systems do not provide a combined percentage that an image is “real” or “AI.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What neither system can establish
- Whether the depicted event happened. A signed history can be accurate about file operations while the scene itself is staged, mislabeled or fictional.
- Whether a caption is true. Dates, locations, identities and descriptions require corroboration from sources that address those facts.
- Whether every AI system has been ruled out. SynthID is tied to supported Google-associated watermarking. C2PA depends on participating software and recorded claims.
- Whether a person named in a credential is the person you assume. Signature validation concerns the claim and its trust relationships; it is not universal identity proof.
- Whether the complete edit history is present. A chain can omit actions performed before credentials were added, after they were removed, or in tools that do not record them.
- Whether a missing signal indicates deception. Watermarks and credentials can be unavailable for benign reasons, including unsupported workflows or a derivative file.
Common mistakes and safer wording
Mistake: calling SynthID a universal AI detector
Safer wording is: “The verifier did not find the supported Google watermark.” If it did find one, say: “Google says all or part of this image or video was created or edited by Google AI.” Do not claim that every AI generator would have been detected.
Mistake: treating a C2PA badge as a truth seal
Safer wording is: “The signed provenance claims passed the validator’s integrity and signature checks.” Add what the claim actually records, and keep factual questions about the scene separate.
Mistake: treating absence as a negative authenticity verdict
“No SynthID” and “no C2PA credentials” are different non-findings. Neither is equivalent to “human-made,” “camera-original” or “false.” State the scope of the check and the file that was inspected.
Mistake: assuming the same access everywhere
Google’s detector and Gemini verification can have changing client, account, format and regional conditions. Describe the route you actually used and date the observation. Do not promise that a reader will see an identical button.
Best Value
Mistake: ignoring the copy under examination
Provenance and watermark observations apply to the submitted bytes. A social-media download, screenshot or re-export may not carry the same available information as the original. If the stakes are high, preserve both versions and identify which one produced the result.
Choosing the right check for a real-world task
Checking a viral image for possible Google AI involvement
Start with SynthID because it directly addresses a supported Google watermark. If detected, report the limited Google AI conclusion and continue investigating the image’s claimed event. If not detected, move on to source tracing and, when available, a C2PA inspection; do not close the inquiry.
Auditing an image’s production history
Prioritize C2PA. Read the sequence of assertions, identify the signing tool or organization, and check where the chain starts and ends. SynthID can add a Google-specific signal, but it cannot replace a provenance record when your question is “which actions were recorded?”
Evaluating an image as evidence of a news event
Use both only as supporting checks. Preserve the original, record exact findings, and verify the event through independent witnesses, geolocation, timestamps, earlier versions and reputable reporting. Neither technology substitutes for verification of the event itself.
Moderating a large incoming collection
Define a policy that separates “Google watermark detected,” “valid provenance present,” “no signal found” and “unable to verify.” Route the last two categories for contextual review instead of automatically removing or approving content. This avoids turning tool coverage into an unintended authenticity rule.
A concise reporting checklist
- Name the system: SynthID or C2PA.
- Identify the exact file or copy examined.
- Quote or closely follow the service’s result wording.
- State the supported scope: Google-associated watermarking or signed provenance claims.
- Separate a positive finding from conclusions about the depicted event.
- Explain what a negative or missing result leaves open.
- Record the date, client and any access or format limitation.
- Seek independent evidence for identity, timing, location and truth.
Bottom line
SynthID and C2PA are complementary, not competing universal truth machines. SynthID can indicate Google AI creation or editing when its supported watermark is detected. C2PA can make recorded provenance claims verifiable when a valid signed credential is present. A negative SynthID result and missing C2PA credentials are both limited non-findings. The strongest conclusion comes from describing exactly what each check established, then verifying the image’s story with evidence outside the file.
