Linux is a clearer difference: Google documents an optional Linux development environment for supported Chromebooks, while equivalent Chromebook-style Linux desktop-app support on Googlebook has not been established in the public guidance cited here. A recent report says web-app installation is more limited and Linux apps work differently on Googlebook.
What Googlebook supports—and what the comparison means
Google describes Googlebook OS as combining ChromeOS with the Android technology stack. Its announcement says web apps will continue to be supported, so it would be inaccurate to say Googlebooks cannot use web apps. The distinction is about how apps can be installed and how the platform implements support, not the presence or absence of web access. Google’s Googlebook transition announcement confirms web-app support but does not provide a full feature-by-feature comparison with Chromebooks.

In a report published October 6, 2026, 9to5Google described Googlebook’s progressive web app installation as more limited than Chromebook’s and said Linux apps do not work in the same way. Those reported differences are useful context, but they should not be treated as a complete compatibility specification for every Googlebook model. 9to5Google’s comparison
Web apps: installation is not the same as web access
A website can still open in a browser even if the operating system does not offer the same option to install it as a progressive web app (PWA). Google’s confirmation that Googlebook OS supports web apps does not, by itself, establish that every site can be installed with the same steps or capabilities as on a Chromebook.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
On Chrome, users can also create a website shortcut that opens like an app. That shortcut is distinct from a modern web app, and both are distinct from legacy Chrome Apps and browser extensions. The names can sound interchangeable, but they describe different mechanisms; a shortcut or extension is not evidence of PWA installation parity. Google’s Chrome Web Store guidance on Chrome apps
Chromebooks offer several app paths, subject to eligibility
Chromebooks can combine browser-based tools, Android apps, and—on supported models—Linux development tools. Which route is available depends on the device, the particular app, and whether an administrator manages the Chromebook.

| App route | What it provides | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Web apps and website shortcuts | Web apps run through the browser; Chrome can also create a shortcut to a website. | Installing a shortcut is not the same as installing a PWA. Googlebook’s web-app support is confirmed, but parity of installation behavior is not established in the official transition announcement. |
| Android apps | Apps may be installed from Google Play on Chromebooks that support it. | Not every app works on every Chromebook. Developers can limit availability, and a school or work administrator can restrict Play Store access. Google’s Android app compatibility guidance |
| Linux development environment | On supported Chromebooks, users can enable a Debian environment with a terminal and install development tools and other Linux software. | Support varies by device, administrators may disable it, and Google lists limitations including camera and hardware-acceleration support. Linux: the documented Chromebook option
On a Chromebook that supports it, Linux is an optional development environment rather than a universal feature that can be assumed on every model. Google’s setup instructions place it in ChromeOS settings and describe a Debian environment where users can use the terminal and install packages. Before relying on a particular desktop program, check both device support and the program’s own requirements.

- Look for the Linux development environment option and select the setup control shown there.
- Complete the setup, then use the Linux terminal to install tools or packages supported by the environment.
If the Linux option is missing or setup is blocked, the model may not support the feature, or a school or work administrator may have disabled it. Google’s help page lists supported-device checks and known limitations. Set up Linux on your Chromebook
Googlebook Linux support: what is and is not confirmed
Google’s public announcement confirms continuing web-app support for Googlebook OS, but it does not establish that Googlebooks have the same Linux development environment or desktop-app integration documented for Chromebooks. The cited October 2026 report says Linux apps do not work in the same way on Googlebook. That is a reason to verify a specific workflow rather than assume Chromebook instructions will carry over; it is not evidence that no Linux-related capability can exist on any Googlebook.

Android apps and extensions are separate questions
Googlebook’s use of Android technology does not prove that every Android app available on a Chromebook will work on Googlebook. On Chromebooks, Android availability and compatibility already vary by device and app, and managed accounts can impose further restrictions. Check the specific app and device rather than inferring support from the platform name.
For extensions, Google says Googlebook supports the WebExtensions platform also used on Chromebook and desktop operating systems, while warning that behavior may differ by platform. Shared extension technology does not demonstrate identical PWA installation or Linux application support. Google’s guidance for adapting extensions to Googlebook OS

Check a specific device before choosing it
- For a website: confirm whether opening it in a browser is enough, or whether you need an installable PWA and its app-like behavior.
- For Linux software: check Linux support on the exact Chromebook model and verify that the application’s requirements fit the Chromebook environment.
- For Android software: confirm that the app is available and compatible on the exact device.
- For a school or work device: ask the administrator whether Linux, Play Store apps, or other installation options are restricted.
- For browser extensions: check the extension’s platform-specific behavior instead of assuming identical operation across Googlebook and Chromebook.
Google’s Chromebook help pages document device and app checks; Googlebook’s official announcement and extension guidance describe support areas but do not supply a complete parity matrix. For a workflow that depends on installing PWAs or running Linux desktop apps, get confirmation for the particular Googlebook model and software before buying or deploying it.
