Game Controls lets you use a keyboard to trigger taps or swipes in Android games built for touchscreens. Here’s what the lights mean, how to change them, and how to set up keyboard controls—plus what the available documentation does and does not establish about other Googlebook features.
What the Googlebook Glowbar colors and patterns mean
The Glowbar is an LED strip on the Googlebook lid. It provides visual feedback about power, battery status, and system activity, including when the display is off. Google’s Glowbar instructions describe these patterns:
| Light or pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Color transitions ending in white | The device is waking or resuming. |
| Four-color gradient fading to dark | The device is going to sleep or powering off. |
| Solid bright white | The device is on and plugged in. |
| Dim white | The device is on and unplugged. |
| Red | Battery is critically low; battery level patterns also use red for 0–19%. |
| Yellow | Battery level is 20–59%. |
| Green | Battery level is 60–94%; at 95% or higher, the bar fills fully green. |
| Blinking red | A disconnected or broken battery, or a charging error. |
| Blue and purple gradient | A Gemini conversation is active. |
| No light | The device may be off, suspended, have Glowbar disabled, or have a low battery. |
Battery color thresholds are more specific than a simple red, yellow, and green summary. Google documents the battery patterns for device-on and asleep/off states; an unlit strip alone does not identify one cause.
How to turn off Glowbar lighting
Google provides a main Glowbar toggle and a separate setting for Gemini’s animation. The main toggle does not suppress critical power, charging, or sleep/resume indicators.

- Open Settings > Device & accessories > Glowbar.
- Turn off Use Glowbar to disable the always-on and Gemini Glowbar light.
To turn off only the Gemini lighting, open Manage Experiences and disable Speaking with Gemini. This turns off Gemini’s Glowbar animation, not the ability to speak with Gemini.
How Game Controls maps a keyboard to Android games
Game Controls maps keyboard presses to on-screen taps or swipes in Android games designed for touchscreen input. Google says it supports common keyboard layouts, including QWERTY, AZERTY, and QWERTZ. This is a configurable touch-input workaround, not a promise that every game will work equally well or behave like a native PC game. Set up controls for a game
- Open the game. In a full-screen game, hover at the top edge to reveal the app name.
- Select the game’s name at the upper left of its window, then choose Game Controls.
- If a preset is available, view and edit it. If there is no preset, select Add first control.
- Choose a control type, position it over the relevant on-screen action, assign a key, and save. For a joystick, assign keys to the directions you need.

- Tap: Assigns a key to an on-screen tap location.
- Joystick: Maps keys to directions for an on-screen joystick; different keys can be assigned to different directions.
Edit or temporarily pause mappings
Controls are configured per game. You can edit, rename, or delete them individually; delete all mappings; move or resize them; hide the overlay; turn controls off; or reset them to their default state. If a game opens a text-entry field, mapped keys pause so you can type, then resume when you leave the field.
