A safari flight carrying 30 people from Seronera Airstrip in Tanzania’s Serengeti reportedly struck a zebra during takeoff on October 4, 2026. The aircraft later diverted to Kilimanjaro International Airport and landed with its landing gear retracted. Reports said the zebra died and all 30 people aboard were uninjured; they did not establish that the strike caused the landing-gear problem.
What happened on the flight
Contemporaneous reports said the aircraft was departing Seronera Airstrip, bound for Zanzibar, when it hit a zebra on the runway during takeoff. The animal died at the scene. There were 26 passengers and four crew members aboard, and reports said nobody on the aircraft was injured. Keystone-SDA/dpa reporting carried by Swissinfo and BBC coverage reported those figures.

Why the plane landed at Kilimanjaro
After the reported strike, the crew reported a landing-gear problem and diverted to Kilimanjaro International Airport. The aircraft made a gear-up landing, meaning it touched down with its landing gear retracted. That forced landing is why some headlines describe the incident as a crash-landing; the reports did not describe a fatal crash, and all 30 occupants were reported uninjured. The Guardian reported the diversion and landing.

Did the zebra strike cause the landing-gear problem?
That causal link had not been confirmed in the contemporaneous coverage. The reported sequence—strike during takeoff, then a landing-gear issue—does not by itself establish that one caused the other. Reports said an investigation was underway, but the cited coverage did not include a primary statement or final finding from Tanzanian aviation authorities. No later official finding is established by the reporting available as of October 7, 2026.

What is known about the aircraft and operator
One report identified the aircraft as an Embraer EMB-120ER Brasilia, registration 5H-HLL, and attributed the flight to Sindbard Air. Another report described registry information listing Angelic Handlers Company Limited in the operator field and South Sudan’s Ministry of Interior as owner. Those reported registry entries do not, on their own, establish who marketed or operated this particular service. Accordingly, Sindbard Air is best treated as an attribution in reporting, not a settled determination of the flight’s operating arrangement. Aviation Safety Network’s incident entry identifies the aircraft details; ch-aviation’s aircraft record is the source cited for registry details.

Kilimanjaro International Airport operations were reported temporarily suspended after the landing. The coverage did not give an exact suspension duration, so the length of the disruption is not established. The available reports also do not establish the aircraft’s damage condition or the investigation’s latest official status.
