Google Wallet and Google Pay do different jobs
Google describes Wallet as a way to store and use selected cards and other items, while Google Pay is how you pay at supported online, in-app, and contactless checkouts. They are related, not competing apps for the same task: a payment card saved in Wallet can be used for contactless purchases where Google Pay or a contactless-payment logo is accepted.

Google says Wallet is available in over 50 countries and regions; the help page does not state when that figure was published. Check current availability and feature support for your location rather than assuming every Wallet feature works everywhere. Google Wallet: About Google Wallet
Which app should you use?
For everyday Android tap-to-pay
Use Google Wallet to add an eligible payment card and set up contactless payment. If Wallet is not already on your phone, Google says you need to download it. Google Pay may appear later as the payment service name or as a button at a participating online or in-app checkout; that does not mean you need a second app for your stored cards.

For tickets, passes, keys, and IDs
Google Wallet can hold more than payment cards. Supported items include transit and boarding passes, gift and loyalty cards, event tickets, digital car keys, campus IDs, and some identity or health documents. What you can add varies by country, issuer, organization, and device. Google Wallet Help: items you can use and Google Wallet Help: add items
For paying on a website or in an app
Choose Google Pay when it is offered at checkout and you want to pay through that service. The merchant and your payment method must support the transaction. The checkout button is not a place to store passes or IDs; that is Wallet’s role.

What you need for contactless payment on Android
Having Wallet installed is not enough on its own. Before relying on tap-to-pay, check each requirement:
- Android version: Google’s setup guidance requires Android 9 or later for Wallet app use.
- Compatible phone and NFC: Your device must support NFC, and NFC must be switched on in the phone’s settings.
- Supported country and card: Google’s country and bank lists determine whether your location and exact card can be used. Banks decide which of their cards support mobile payments, so a card network or bank name alone is not a guarantee.
- Current software: Install available Android and Wallet updates before troubleshooting.
- Accepted terminal: The shop’s payment terminal must accept contactless payments for your card.
Google’s setup and troubleshooting details are in its Google Wallet contactless payment requirements and Google Wallet contactless payment help. If your phone lacks NFC or is not compatible, check your exact device, region, and issuer requirements before buying another phone; compatibility can depend on all three.

Using Google Wallet for public transit
Transit support is set by the transit agency, so there are two distinct ways to pay and they are not interchangeable everywhere.
Tap a contactless bank card
Some systems let riders tap a supported debit or credit card at the gate. Confirm that your agency accepts the card and the device you plan to tap with.

Add an agency transit pass
Other systems let riders save an agency-issued pass in Wallet. Check the agency’s own instructions to see whether it supports Wallet and how to add or use the pass.
If a trip requires taps both when entering and exiting, use the same device and payment method at both points. A phone and a smartwatch count as separate payment methods even if both are linked to the same underlying card. See Google Wallet transit help and Google’s guidance on using a smartwatch for transit.

What happens to items already in Google Pay or when you change phones?
Google says payment methods, passes, tickets, and other items previously added to Google Pay remain in Wallet after the transition. You do not need to add them again just because the app name changed.
When you move to a new phone, cards and passes should transfer when Wallet transfers, but you must set up the payment card again for tap-to-pay. Treat the transfer as expected rather than guaranteed; if something is missing, follow Google’s account- and device-specific help, including its Wallet troubleshooting guidance.
