Then work through Chrome and computer permissions, the selected devices and mute controls, Discord’s Voice & Video settings, and connection restarts. This order can help you find whether the cause is a channel rule, a blocked permission, or a device setting—before considering new hardware.
First, check whether the problem is limited to one channel
Try another Discord voice channel or server. If your microphone or camera works there, the issue may be a role or channel permission rather than Chrome or your device. Ask a server administrator to check whether your role has Connect (join voice), Speak (send microphone audio), and Video (share camera) permissions. If you are server-muted or server-deafened, an administrator or owner may need to remove that restriction. Discord’s permissions guide explains these controls.

Allow Discord to use your microphone or camera in Chrome
Chrome’s site permission and your computer’s privacy permission are separate. A device can work in another app while Chrome is blocked from using it.

- In Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
- Select Microphone or Camera, depending on what is failing.
- Look for Discord in the blocked list. Change its permission to Allow, or remove the saved block and return to Discord.
- Join a voice channel again. If Chrome asks for access, choose Allow.
Google also documents a route from the site itself: open Discord, select the site-information control beside the address bar, choose Site settings, and change the relevant permission. Changes save automatically. See Google’s instructions for changing site permissions. Discord’s Chrome microphone instructions specifically recommend removing Discord from the list of sites not allowed to use the microphone, then accepting Chrome’s prompt when joining a voice channel.
If Chrome sends you to your computer’s settings, enable microphone or camera access there and follow any instruction to quit or restart an app. On a work- or school-managed browser, an administrator may control these settings; ask them for help if the permission is locked. Google Chrome Help notes: “If you’re using Chrome at work or school, your network administrator can set camera and microphone settings.”

Check mute controls, devices, and levels
A permission can be allowed while Discord is still listening to the wrong microphone or sending sound to the wrong output. Check the physical controls as well as the app settings.
- Make sure a headset’s cable or earcup mute switch is off. In Discord, confirm you are not muted or deafened.
- Open User Settings → Voice & Video. Check that Input Mode is set as intended; if you expect the microphone to transmit continuously, make sure Push to Talk was not selected by mistake.
- In the same Discord settings, select the microphone under input device and your headphones or speakers under output device. Check the input and output levels.
- In your computer’s sound settings, confirm the intended microphone is the default recording device and its recording level is usable.
- For camera trouble, make sure the intended camera is selected in Chrome and has computer-level access.

Reconnect, then restart Chrome and your computer
- Leave the voice channel and join it again.
- Close and reopen Chrome, then try the call again.
- If the problem persists, restart the computer.
- Check that the headset, webcam, or other device is firmly connected. For a USB device, try another port.
If the issue remains, check for operating-system updates and current audio, webcam, or graphics drivers and software. These are later troubleshooting steps, particularly if the problem appears tied to one device or browser environment; they do not replace the permission and device-selection checks.
For camera issues, do not confuse Discord desktop settings with Chrome
Discord’s video troubleshooting advice includes disabling hardware acceleration in the Discord desktop client under Voice & Video. That is not a Chrome setting, and the guidance does not establish it as a control for the Discord web client. For Chrome, first verify site and computer camera access, the selected camera, channel Video permission, and the connection. See Discord’s video troubleshooting guidance.

When to contact an administrator, Discord, or the device maker
Ask a server administrator to resolve channel permissions or server mute/deafen restrictions. Ask your workplace or school administrator if Chrome’s camera or microphone setting is managed or locked. If the browser and device permissions are available but Discord still fails, contact Discord support with useful diagnostic details:
- Your browser and its version.
- Where the issue occurs (browser, mobile, or desktop) and which operating system you use.
- Screenshots of Discord’s Voice & Video settings.
- The input and output devices you have connected or selected.
- A concise description of what fails, such as “others cannot hear my microphone” or “I cannot hear other participants.”
If the microphone, camera, or headset also fails in other apps or on another computer, check the device maker’s troubleshooting guidance. Consider replacement only after confirming the hardware itself is faulty; a new headset will not remove a Chrome or Discord permission block.
