Google Sets ChromeOS Update Horizon Through Mid-2034, but Chromebook Support Varies by Model

Google’s mid-2034 ChromeOS update horizon is not a cutoff for every Chromebook. Check your model’s AUE to see how long it remains supported.

No: Google has not announced that it is ending support for all Chromebooks early. Its administrator FAQ, last updated September 23, 2026, says ChromeOS devices will receive updates and security patches through mid-2034. Individual Chromebooks still receive updates according to their own Auto Update Expiration (AUE) dates, and Google says current devices will be supported through their stated lifetimes.

Is Google ending ChromeOS support?

Google’s stated mid-2034 date is the horizon for ChromeOS device updates and security patches, not a single cutoff date for every Chromebook. The company says current Chromebooks will continue receiving updates through their supported lifetimes under its Auto Update policy. The announcement therefore does not mean every owner must replace a device in 2034, or that Google has shortened every model’s previously published support period.

Google’s administrator FAQ says: “ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034.” It also says: “We will maintain support for current Chromebook devices running ChromeOS as outlined in our Auto Update policy and the Chromebooks you have today will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime.” (Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education FAQ)

Will your Chromebook still get updates?

That depends on its exact model and AUE date. Google publishes support dates by model; the overall mid-2034 horizon does not replace the model-specific schedule. If your device’s AUE is still in the future, Google says it will receive updates through its supported lifetime.

How to check your Chromebook’s AUE

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select About ChromeOS.
  3. Open Additional details.
  4. Look under Update schedule for the device’s update information.

You can also find the exact model in Google’s Auto Update policy table. Check the model name carefully: similar Chromebook names can have different support dates.

What does the 10-year update policy mean?

Google measures the 10-year support period from a Chromebook platform’s release date, not from the day an individual buyer purchases the device. Google says models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates. Some pre-2021 devices that received extended updates may not have certain features or services. The practical check for any particular Chromebook is its published AUE, rather than a calculation based on your purchase date. (Google Auto Update policy; Google’s Chromebook update guidance)

What happens when a Chromebook reaches AUE?

Google says an expired Chromebook can still be used, but it no longer receives automatic software and security updates. That can leave the device without later fixes and improvements, so continued use is a trade-off rather than ongoing supported use. Google lists moving to a newer Chromebook as one possible alternative. If the device is managed by a school or employer, Google advises asking its administrator about the organization’s policy. Will existing Chromebooks migrate to Googlebook OS?

Possibly, but Google has not published the eligible Chromebook model list or detailed migration instructions. Its administrator FAQ says, “Many of our newest Chromebook devices will be eligible to transition over to Googlebook OS,” and says many may have direct migration paths. That is not a guarantee for every device, and it is not yet enough information to plan a particular model’s migration. (Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education FAQ)

For an individual owner, base a refresh decision on the Chromebook’s AUE, whether it still suits your needs, and whether you are comfortable waiting for Google’s eligibility and migration details. Do not assume a current Chromebook will automatically migrate or that migration will extend its support.

What should schools and businesses do?

Google’s FAQ poses the right planning question: “How should this announcement impact our current hardware purchasing and refresh plans?” Organizations should base near-term decisions on known model support dates and management needs, not on an unconfirmed migration path.

Google says existing Chrome Enterprise and Education upgrade licenses remain supported for managing Chromebook fleets through each device’s lifecycle. The initial 2026 Googlebook launch is for personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Google says comprehensive Googlebook management will start rolling out in the second half of 2027; it has not yet provided the new licensing structure’s details. These limits matter to managed fleets even if a future migration is possible. (Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education FAQ)

Should you buy or replace a Chromebook now?

There is no reason to replace a supported Chromebook solely because Google announced a mid-2034 ChromeOS horizon. If you are buying or refreshing for other reasons, check the candidate’s exact AUE before deciding: the remaining update period can differ from the device’s age or the date it is sold. Organizations should also account for centralized management requirements, which the initial Googlebook consumer rollout does not yet meet.
