Bitget says attackers exploited a zero-day vulnerability in an unnamed third-party security product, stole internal access credentials and used forged withdrawal instructions to bypass risk checks. The resulting transfers came from hot and warm wallets; Bitget says its cold wallets and private keys were not compromised.
How the attackers reached Bitget’s wallet system
The disclosed attack path began outside the exchange’s wallet service. According to Bitget and preliminary findings from Mandiant and SlowMist, attackers compromised third-party security appliances, gained internal access and moved laterally to Bitget’s production wallet job server. They then used malicious packages and a customized withdrawal tool to submit forged instructions that the wallet system processed as legitimate.

That distinction matters: the available accounts describe misuse of access and withdrawal controls, not the theft of private keys. Bitget identified the affected asset layer as hot and warm wallets and said its cold wallets and private keys were unaffected. This is Bitget’s account of the incident, not a general guarantee about exchange security.

Mandiant’s September 28, 2026, status report described unauthorized privileged access to appliances labeled A and B, a web shell and command-and-control connection on appliance B, and movement to the production wallet job server. Mandiant called its findings preliminary and said the investigation was ongoing. Bitget said on September 30 that the independent Mandiant and SlowMist findings broadly aligned with its earlier description.

Public accounts reviewed for this incident identify the affected devices only as Product A and Product B. They do not name a vendor or model, or provide a public CVE identifier. The vulnerability is described as a zero-day, but its technical details are not established in those accounts.
Why the reported loss changed from $351.6 million to $387.5 million
Bitget’s later total is a revised accounting of the same incident, not a report of an additional theft.

What Bitget said about customer balances and its Protection Fund
Bitget said customer account balances were unaffected and that its Protection Fund, which the company valued at more than $464 million, would cover the financial impact. Those are company assurances; the cited incident materials do not independently audit account balances, reserves or the fund’s holdings.

Bitget also announced a bounty for information that directly leads to freezing or recovering the stolen assets. Its incident notice warns users not to disclose passwords, private keys, seed phrases or verification codes to anyone claiming to help restore withdrawals.

Bitget’s October 2, 2026, service notice said the phased restoration was complete, including withdrawals for remaining tokens as well as fiat and C2C services. That is a dated company announcement, not a live check of every asset or account; service availability can change, so users should consult Bitget’s official status and service channels for current details.
