Microsoft documents a specific Word for Mac PDF-export problem: when you choose “Best for printing,” hyperlinks may not convert correctly. That does not mean every Word PDF failure has the same cause. The right fix depends on whether links are wrong, an online save ends in .docx, or Word for the web shows a blank print preview.
What Microsoft confirms about Word for Mac PDF links
Microsoft says: “When using Best for printing, the hyperlinks may not convert correctly. This is a known issue in Word for Mac.” The statement identifies a risk with that export choice; it does not say all links disappear, identify a root cause, or promise a universal fix. If the PDF exists but links are missing or incorrect, check which output option you used and test the links in the exported file. On Mac, Microsoft also documents “Best for electronic distribution and accessibility” as an option for tagged PDFs. You can try it and inspect the result, but Microsoft does not say that it repairs every hyperlink problem.

Identify which Word PDF problem you have
- Links are wrong in a Mac PDF: Check whether you selected “Best for printing,” the option tied to Microsoft’s documented hyperlink issue.
- A file saved to an online location has a .docx extension: Microsoft’s Word for Mac known-issues index lists this as a workaround item. Compare the file’s actual extension and save location, then follow the current entry’s linked workaround. The index entry does not establish that local exports are affected or give enough detail to reproduce the workaround here.
- Print preview is blank in Word for the web on a Mac: This is a separate web-app printing issue, not the same as desktop PDF export. Microsoft’s notice was last updated November 21, 2024, and said “STATUS: INVESTIGATING.” Its documented workaround is to convert the document to PDF first and print that PDF. Check the live notice for current status.
- Pages, markup, bookmarks, fonts, or accessibility are wrong: Review the export options for your platform. These are output settings to inspect, not evidence that the Mac hyperlink issue applies.
Save a PDF in desktop Word or Word for the web
Word for Windows desktop
- For a saved document, select File > Save a Copy. For an unsaved document, use File > Save As or Save a Copy.
- Select Browse to choose a local destination, choose PDF in the file-type list, and select Save.
- To adjust output details, select More Options > Options before saving.
Word for Mac desktop
- Select File > Save As or File > Save a copy.
- Choose PDF in File Format, enter a name, and select Save.
- Use a different filename from the Word document so the editable original remains available, as Microsoft recommends in its Mac PDF instructions.
Word for the web
- Select File > Print.
- Under Printer, select Save as PDF, then select Save.
- For more control, such as bookmarks, open the document in the desktop app; Microsoft describes the web workflow as creating a basic PDF.
Labels and available choices can vary by platform and product version. Microsoft’s Mac-specific instructions apply to Microsoft 365 for Mac, Word 2024 for Mac, and Word 2021 for Mac.

Check PDF options when content or formatting is wrong
In Word for Windows, More Options > Options exposes settings that can change what appears in the PDF. Check these against the result you need:
- Page range: Choose which pages to include.
- Markup: Select “Document” or “Document showing markup” to control whether tracked changes and other markup appear.
- Bookmarks: Create them from headings or Word bookmarks.
- Accessibility: Include document-structure tags.
- Archiving and fonts: Select PDF/A if needed and review the handling of fonts that cannot be embedded.
- Security: Encrypt the PDF with a password if required.
Inspect the finished PDF rather than assuming the selected settings produced the intended pages, markup, or formatting. Microsoft’s desktop PDF instructions describe these Windows options.

Create an accessible PDF
- Run Word’s Accessibility Checker before export and address the issues it identifies.
- On Windows, open the PDF export options and ensure Document structure tags for accessibility is selected.
- On Mac, Microsoft’s documented route for a tagged PDF is Best for electronic distribution and accessibility (uses Microsoft online service).
Microsoft says the Mac online conversion option sends the document over the internet to a secure Microsoft service, returns the converted file immediately, and does not store its content on Microsoft’s servers.
