Google Search Generative AI Control Adds Child-Property Override Notice

Google Search Console’s Search generative AI control page now documents a notice for top-level domain owners when a child property overrides the parent setting.

Google’s Search Console documentation says owners of a top-level domain property will see a notice when a child property overrides the parent’s Search generative AI setting. The notice adds visibility; it does not itself change the setting or indicate a change to Google’s ranking behavior.

What the new top-level domain notice means

Search Engine Roundtable reported the documentation update on October 6, 2026. The reported wording says: “Owners of the top-level domain property will see a notification on the Search generative AI control page when one of their child properties overrides the parent setting.” The notice is intended to alert the top-level property owner to a different setting lower in the property hierarchy; it is not a control action.

The notice matters when a site’s settings are managed across several Search Console properties. A top-level domain property owner can now be alerted that a child property has its own override, rather than assuming the parent’s selection applies everywhere beneath it.

What the Search generative AI control affects

Google’s Search Console Help page says the control determines whether a site’s links and content can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Google Discover. Inclusion is the default. Excluding content prevents it from appearing in those covered features, including as links or as grounding for responses.

This is not a setting for removing a site from Google Search altogether. Google directs site owners who want to block Search visibility to use noindex. Google also said in its June 3, 2026 announcement, updated August 31, 2026, that the control is not used as a ranking signal for results outside the generative AI Search features it covers.

How parent and child property settings work

A Search Console property’s position in the site hierarchy determines whether it acts as a parent or child. Google says a property normally inherits the setting from its closest parent that has manually configured the control to stop inheriting. If no such parent exists, the property inherits from the top-level domain property. A child property owner can also configure the control directly for that property and its subpages.

That hierarchy means a URL-prefix or subdomain property should not automatically be assumed to follow the top-level property directly: an intervening parent and its configured setting may determine what is inherited. The new notification signals that a child has overridden the parent setting, but owners should inspect the property hierarchy and settings to understand the effective configuration.

How to investigate an override notice

  1. Open the top-level domain property in Google Search Console and go to its Search generative AI control page.
  2. Identify the child property named by the notification and note that it has a setting different from the parent.
  3. Open that child property’s control page to review its current selection and whether it is manually configured.
  4. Check relevant intervening parent properties and confirm with the owners responsible for those settings whether the override is intentional.
  5. Change the setting at the property that should govern the affected pages, if a correction is needed. Review the hierarchy rather than assuming a top-level change will directly control every child.

When a setting change takes effect

Google says the control rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. For exclusion, Google says a change should generally take effect within one to two days after it goes live, but caching and propagation across Google systems can make some content take longer to disappear. A notice or setting change should therefore not be treated as proof of an immediate change in what is displayed.

What this update does not establish

The documented change is an alert about a child-property override. It does not say that Google altered ranking behavior, changed the inheritance rules, or made exclusion mandatory. Google’s June 2026 announcement cited more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode; those are broad usage figures, not estimates of the notice’s impact or of traffic gained or lost from a particular setting.
