To fix distorted PS5 audio, first identify whether it happens through TV speakers, an HDMI soundbar or receiver, or headphones. Then check mute, volume, and the selected output; isolate the HDMI connection if you use one; and update the console and connected device. Change one thing at a time so you can see which check makes a difference.
Find out which audio path is affected
Test the sound through the output you normally use, then try another available path if possible. Note whether the distortion happens everywhere or only through one device, one app, or the TV-speaker 3D audio effect. If only one path sounds wrong, focus on that connection first; distortion on a single output does not by itself prove the PS5 is faulty.

- Soundbar or AV receiver: Temporarily bypass it by connecting the PS5 directly to the TV or screen.
- Headphones: Check the headset’s volume and connection, then review the PS5 headphone output setting.

Check mute, volume, and the PS5 audio output
- Make sure the TV, sound system, or headphones are not muted and that their volume is audible.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Check that Output Device is set to the device you intend to use.
- If using HDMI, check HDMI Device Type. If using headphones, review Output to Headphones.
- If the sound remains abnormal, note the current Audio Format (Priority) setting before changing it. This setting controls the audio format for games and video apps; some apps, including the disc player, may have separate audio settings.
The available audio options can vary with the connected devices and setup. Sony explains these controls in its PS5 audio settings guide. Change one setting at a time and retest, so you can reverse any change that does not help.

Isolate an HDMI connection
If audio comes through a TV, soundbar, or receiver over HDMI, troubleshoot the cable and signal path before assuming the console needs repair.
- Turn off or disconnect intermediary equipment for the test, then connect the PS5 directly to the TV or screen.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- If the sound is still distorted, try a different HDMI port on the display and, if available, another HDMI cable.
- Compare the result with the original setup. If bypassing a soundbar or receiver clears the distortion, investigate that device or its connections; if a different cable fixes it, the original cable may be faulty.
Sony says a faulty HDMI cable can cause audio problems and recommends trying another cable. Sony recommends the HDMI 2.1 cable supplied with the PS5 for the console’s high-performance features, but older HDMI cables can also be used; HDMI 2.1 is not established as a requirement for correcting distorted audio. See Sony’s connection troubleshooting steps.

Update the PS5 and connected equipment
Sony recommends updating PS5 system software when troubleshooting sound. Check for a system software update using the console’s settings, then test the audio again. Also check whether the TV or audio device has a firmware update, and consult its manufacturer’s manual for device-specific settings. The exact update steps depend on the connected equipment.
Check TV-speaker 3D audio separately
If the problem occurs specifically with 3D audio through TV speakers, compare the sound with 3D audio enabled and disabled. Sony’s guidance for this setup recommends checking that the TV speakers are not blocked and turning off TV sound-quality adjustments such as surround sound while troubleshooting the 3D effect. Adjust the TV volume if it changes when the effect is enabled.

The PS5 measures room acoustics for TV-speaker 3D audio with the controller’s built-in microphone. Repeat the measurement if you move the TV, change your seating position, or alter the room environment. These checks apply to TV-speaker 3D audio; they do not establish that 3D audio causes every crackling or distorted-sound problem. Sony’s TV-speaker 3D audio setup guidance describes the measurement and setup considerations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to contact support
If the distortion persists after checking the output, connections, and relevant settings, contact PlayStation Repairs about a possible console-side issue. If bypassing the console’s intermediary connection or changing the output device isolates the problem to a TV, headset, soundbar, or receiver, contact that device’s manufacturer for further checks. These troubleshooting steps can narrow down the affected path, but they do not conclusively identify a failed component.
