A Sprint is a 48-hour competition in one supported game: Google matches you with other players, records a specified in-game score, and ranks everyone on one leaderboard. A Quest is a checklist of required actions. You receive its stated reward only after completing every required step.
The quickest way to choose is to ask whether you want to beat other players (Sprint) or finish a personalized set of tasks (Quest). Their entry points, eligibility rules, progress tracking, and rewards are also different.

Google Play Sprint and Quest compared
| Feature | Google Play Sprint | Google Play Games Quest |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Outscore matched players in one game | Complete every task in an offer |
| Time model | 48-hour contest after matchmaking starts | Deadline and conditions shown on that Quest’s page |
| Other participants | One to four opponents in the same game, for two to five players total | Normally an individual account activity; the cited Quest documentation does not describe opponent matchmaking |
| How progress is measured | A specified in-game action and a shared Sprint leaderboard | Google’s checklist of required steps |
| Reward | Temporary avatar effect and temporary “Won Sprint” Gamer Profile highlight | Offer-specific reward, including Play Points-related or in-game items such as skins, boosters, or currency |
| Where to find it | Play Store app: You tab > Challenges; or the in-game Sidekick | Play Points page, or the Play Store Games, Apps, or You tabs |
| Main dependencies | Supported title, current Google Play installation, Play Games account, and supported Android device or Google Play Games on PC | Account eligibility, offer personalization and activity tracking, and sometimes a Play Games profile |
Availability is not universal. Sprints appear only in selected games, while Quest offers and their steps can differ between accounts. Google’s cited help pages do not provide a complete country-by-country availability list, so the presence of a feature in your account is the practical test.
What a Google Play Sprint is
Google describes Play Games Sprints as quick, 48-hour challenges in which you compete against a small group of players. It is a multiplayer score contest layered over a supported game, not a sequence of purchases or a general Play Points mission.

How matchmaking and the clock work
When you enroll, Google looks for one to four other people playing the same supported game. That creates a group of two to five players. The 48-hour clock begins once at least one other player has been matched; it is not simply a timer that starts when you first open the Challenges screen.
Each Sprint names the in-game activity being scored. Depending on the title, that can be points, coins, levels, or another tracked action. Google sends the resulting score to the shared Sprint leaderboard automatically when you play with the intended Play Games account.
How a winner is decided
The highest score when the contest ends wins. If two players finish on the same score, the player who reached that score first wins the tie. If every opponent leaves, you win automatically only when your score is above zero; an empty contest does not turn a zero score into a win.

A Sprint cannot be paused or left after it starts, and an account can have only one active Sprint at a time. Plan to use the correct game account before enrolling, because switching profiles or playing an unsupported copy can keep your activity from being counted.
What the winner receives
The winner receives two temporary profile rewards: an avatar effect and a “Won Sprint” highlight on the Gamer Profile. Google describes both as lasting for the next 48 hours. They are status effects tied to that win, rather than permanent game currency or an item in the game’s inventory.
How to find and join a Sprint
- Install the official current version of a supported game from Google Play.
- Open the Play Store app and select the You tab.
- Open Challenges and look for an available Sprint, or open the game’s Sidekick menu while playing.
- Confirm that the game is using the Play Games profile you intend to use for the contest.
- Read the tracked action and enrollment details, then join. The contest starts after another player is matched, and the leaderboard begins recording the specified action.
If Challenges or Sidekick does not show a Sprint, that does not necessarily indicate a fault. The game may not be supported for Sprints, the feature may not be offered to your account or region, or you may not meet the account and profile requirements.
Sprint eligibility and technical requirements
Google lists several conditions for Sprint participation. They are separate from simply owning the game.

- You must use a standard personal Google account, rather than an account type that Google excludes from the feature.
- You must meet the age requirement for your country.
- Your Google Play Games profile must have existed for at least 21 days before Sprint enrollment.
- You must play the official, current version of a supported game installed from Google Play.
- You need a supported Android device or Google Play Games on PC.
Using a different Play Games identity inside the game is a common cause of missing scores. Before playing, open the game’s account or Play Games controls and verify that the signed-in profile matches the one that joined the Sprint.
What a Google Play Games Quest is
Google defines a Quest as a series of steps that rewards you when all the steps are complete. Unlike a Sprint, it does not ask you to beat a matched group on a shared leaderboard. The Quest page is the authority for the required actions, the deadline, and the reward attached to that particular offer.
Where Quests appear
Eligible offers may be shown on the Google Play Points page or in the Play Store’s Games, Apps, or You tabs. Placement can vary, so not seeing a Quest in one tab does not prove that your account has no offers. Google presents Quests selectively according to account settings and activity.
How Quest progress is defined
Open a Quest’s progress page before starting. It lists every required step and the reward. Unless that page says otherwise, steps can be completed in any order. A Quest is not complete when one task is finished; Google issues the reward only after all required steps have been recorded.
Offers can differ by account. Google says the Quests a user receives depend on account settings or activity, such as Play Points level where applicable, or other behavior. Two people using the same device or game can therefore see different tasks, deadlines, and rewards.
Types of rewards
A Quest reward is offer-specific. Play Points-related offers can award points or another benefit described on the page. Google has also expanded Quests toward in-game rewards, with current examples including character skins, performance boosters, and valuable currencies. Do not assume that every Quest grants Play Points or that an in-game reward is permanent; read the individual offer.
How to complete a Quest reliably
- Open the Quest from the Play Points page or the Play Store Games, Apps, or You tab.
- Record the deadline, each required step, and the exact reward shown on the progress page.
- Check whether the offer requires Play personalization or a signed-in Play Games profile.
- Turn on the required settings and sign in with the required profile before performing the task.
- Complete every listed step. Follow any stated order or game-specific condition; if none is stated, Google generally allows the steps in any order.
- Return to the Quest progress page and wait for all steps to show as complete before expecting the reward.
- Claim the reward if the page provides a claim button, then verify the destination account, game inventory, or Play Points balance specified by the offer.
For purchase-based Play Points Quests, Google treats transactions that earn Play Points as purchases for the purpose of the offer. Examples include buying an app or game, paying for a subscription, buying an in-app item, or renting a book or movie through Google Play. The Quest page’s wording controls which transaction qualifies.

Why a Google Play Quest is not counting
Most missing progress has a specific eligibility or tracking cause. Check these in order rather than repeating the same action.

Personalization is disabled
Some Quests require Play personalization so Google can observe in-game activity. If the Quest says personalization is required, enable it in the relevant Google Play settings, then perform the step again. Activity completed while tracking was disabled may not be backfilled.
The wrong Play Games profile is active
A Quest can require a Play Games profile. Open the game’s account controls and confirm that the profile named by the offer is signed in. Playing as a guest or under another Google account can leave the progress page unchanged.
The action does not match the wording
Read the step literally. A requirement to earn a level, make a qualifying purchase, or complete a particular in-game action is not satisfied by a similar action that the offer does not list. Check the progress page for the exact condition and any game, date, or transaction limitation.
The transaction was canceled or refunded
For a Play Points-linked Quest, a canceled or refunded qualifying purchase can remove recorded progress or reverse a reward that was already claimed. Keep the transaction active and check the order status in Google Play before contacting support.

The deadline or account offer changed
Quest terms are individualized. An offer can expire at the displayed deadline, and a different account may have a different version of the task. Save the page details while the offer is active and use the account that originally received it.
The game or app was installed outside the required path
If a step specifies Google Play installation, use the official current version installed from Google Play. A sideloaded, outdated, cloned, or otherwise unsupported copy may not send the activity Google needs.

Progress is delayed
After completing a step, reopen the Quest progress page, make sure the device is online, and allow the game and Play Store to synchronize. Do not repeat a purchase or other costly action merely because the display has not refreshed; first verify the requirement and transaction status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the two features differ in everyday use
Competition versus completion
A Sprint measures relative performance. Your result matters because it is compared with the scores of the players matched into your group. A Quest measures absolute completion: once every required step is recorded, the offer’s reward is earned regardless of another player’s result.
Recommended Free Tools
Fixed contest window versus offer deadline
Sprint timing follows the matchmaking event and uses the same 48-hour contest format. Quest timing is set by each offer, so the deadline and any qualifying period must be read from that Quest’s page.
Leaderboard score versus checklist state
Sprint progress is a live score for one tracked action. Quest progress is a set of completed or incomplete steps. A high game score cannot substitute for an uncompleted Quest step, and finishing a Quest task does not place you on a Sprint leaderboard.
Temporary status versus variable reward
A Sprint win produces the defined temporary avatar and profile effects. A Quest can produce different benefits from one offer to another, including Play Points-related rewards or items delivered inside a game.
Discoverability and personalization
Sprint discovery depends mainly on a supported title, the Play Games account, and the relevant Play Store or Sidekick entry point. Quest discovery is more personalized: account activity, Play Points level where applicable, personalization settings, and the offer’s own conditions influence what appears.
Which feature should you use?
- Choose a Sprint when you want a short, competitive session, can play a supported title during the contest window, and are comfortable with your result depending on other players.
- Choose a Quest when you prefer a checklist, want to target a stated reward, or need a Play Points-related or in-game benefit rather than a temporary profile distinction.
- Use both when a supported game offers a Sprint and your account has a Quest for compatible activity. Treat their tracking as separate: joining one does not enroll you in the other.
Neither feature is a universal catalog available to every Google Play user. A missing Sprint or Quest can reflect game support, account eligibility, personalization, profile age, region, or the way Google is distributing the offer—not necessarily a problem with your phone.

Important edge cases
You tie another player
The tie-breaker is timing: the first player to reach the shared score wins. Continuing to play after reaching a tied score can matter if another player reaches it earlier, so watch the leaderboard rather than relying only on the final number.
Everyone else leaves
You receive an automatic Sprint win only if your score is above zero when all opponents have left. Start the tracked activity early enough to establish a positive score.
You want to switch Sprints
There is no leave-or-pause workflow once a Sprint has started, and only one can be active at a time. Finish the current contest before expecting another enrollment opportunity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA Quest offers an in-game item
Check where the offer says the reward will arrive. A skin, booster, or currency may be delivered to the game account associated with the qualifying Play Games identity rather than appearing in your Play Points balance.
Why these features matter in Google Play’s gaming system
Google’s 2026 Android Developers Blog describes Sprints as an extension of competitive Play Games features: fast 48-hour contests matching two to five players of similar skills, alongside longer leaderboard seasons called Leagues. The same blog reported more than 285 million Sidekick users and more than two billion players connected by Play Games. Those figures describe Google’s overall gaming ecosystem, not a guarantee that either feature is enabled for every account.
That context explains the design difference. Sprints are built for quick, visible competition inside a game. Quests are a flexible offer system that can connect Play Store activity, Play Points behavior, and game actions to a specific reward. Reading the individual Sprint or Quest screen remains essential because support, deadlines, steps, and rewards are not identical across games or accounts.
