The Google Pixel 8a is a strong choice if you want a capable camera, a compact OLED display and a long software-support commitment without paying flagship launch pricing. Its main tradeoffs are slow wired charging, a build that feels less premium, and performance that can fall off under sustained heavy loads. Whether it is worth buying now depends heavily on its price beside newer Pixel models in your market.
What the Pixel 8a offers
Google announced the Pixel 8a on May 7, 2024, with a US starting price of $499. That is its historical launch price, not a guide to current offers. The phone pairs Google’s Tensor G3 processor with a 6.1-inch display, a 64 MP main rear camera, a 13 MP ultrawide camera and a typical 4,492 mAh battery. These are Google’s published specifications, not independent test results. Google’s Pixel 8a specifications and launch announcement provide the full details.

What are the Pixel 8a’s biggest advantages?
Camera quality and a useful ultrawide
The camera system is one of the phone’s clearest strengths. The Guardian, WIRED and GSMArena all speak positively about the camera experience. The main camera is joined by an ultrawide, giving you a broader framing option for landscapes, groups and tight spaces. There is no extended optical zoom, however, so distant subjects are a weaker fit than they would be on a phone with a dedicated telephoto camera. The Guardian’s review, WIRED’s review and GSMArena’s review describe their impressions.
Compact OLED display
At 6.1 inches, the display is relatively compact by current smartphone standards. Reviewers praise its OLED image quality and brightness; WIRED also highlights its smoothness. That makes the screen a notable everyday advantage if you prefer a smaller phone, though GSMArena points to thick bezels as a less polished part of the design.

Seven years of software support
Google promises seven years of software support, including Android OS upgrades and security updates. The period begins when the Pixel 8a first became available on the Google Store in the US, rather than on the date you buy a particular device. Google’s May 7, 2024 announcement states the commitment; its specification page clarifies the start point. This is a meaningful advantage for buyers who keep a phone for several years.
What are the Pixel 8a’s drawbacks?
Slow wired charging
Google specifies wired charging up to 18W, based on use of its 30W USB-C charger, and says the adapter is sold separately. That is a maximum specification, not a promise that every charging setup will reach it. In its review experience, Android Authority reported a full charge taking 100 minutes; GSMArena also describes charging as very slow. Those are review observations, not guaranteed results for every charger, device or software version. See Google’s charging specifications, Android Authority’s review and GSMArena’s review.

Battery assessments depend on use
The Pixel 8a’s typical battery capacity is 4,492 mAh, but capacity alone does not determine how long it lasts. Google says its battery-life estimate is based on a median-user profile and controlled testing on pre-production devices, and that actual results vary with use. Its “up to 72 hours” claim applies only when Extreme Battery Saver is enabled. Independent assessments also differ: GSMArena reports good battery life in its testing, while WIRED says endurance could be better. Consider your own mix of screen time, mobile data, gaming and navigation rather than treating either review as a universal runtime guarantee. Google’s specifications, GSMArena and WIRED explain their respective claims.

The phone has a plastic rear, Gorilla Glass 3 on the front and an IP67 water-resistance rating, according to The Guardian’s review. These traits may matter if you prioritize a more premium-feeling build or stronger front-glass protection. GSMArena also reports heavy throttling under load. That makes the 8a less compelling for sustained intensive gaming or other demanding workloads than for everyday tasks such as communication, browsing and photography. Neither review’s assessment should be read as a measured result for every user’s workload. The Guardian and GSMArena discuss these tradeoffs.

Should you buy the Pixel 8a, or is it worth it?
The Pixel 8a is easiest to recommend when its current local price is clearly below relevant alternatives and you value its camera, compact screen and long support period more than fast charging, premium materials or sustained performance. It is harder to recommend at a price close to a newer or higher-tier Pixel. Reviewers have identified both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9a as alternatives, but their price comparisons reflect review-period conditions—not today’s prices or availability. Android Authority argues that a Pixel 8 may be preferable when prices are close, and that the Pixel 9a brought upgrades at the same launch price; WIRED also notes that a discounted Pixel 8 can compete closely. Check current offers and stock where you live before deciding. Android Authority and WIRED outline those review-era comparisons.
