Google Photos storage is full because of screenshots: how to free space safely

Short answer: first determine whether your Google Account quota or your phone’s local storage is full. Google Photos shares the account’s 15 GB allowance with Gmail and Google Drive, so screenshots may be only one part of the problem. If you need cloud space, review and delete unwanted screenshots in the storage-management tool. If you only need phone space, use Free up space on this device after confirming that backup is complete; that removes local copies while the backed-up items remain in Google Photos.

Do not start by deleting everything in your screenshots folder. Some screenshots are receipts, travel details, medical information, work records or evidence you may need later. The safe method is to verify the backup, make a second copy of irreplaceable files, review Google’s suggested cleanup categories, and then choose either device-only removal or permanent cloud deletion.

Why screenshots can make Google Photos storage look full

Every Google Account includes 15 GB of storage, according to Google’s 2026 storage information. That allowance is shared by Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. A large screenshot collection can therefore contribute to a full account, but it is not proof that screenshots are the only cause. Large videos, email attachments and Drive files may be using the same quota.

Screenshots are unusually easy to accumulate. Phones can automatically back them up alongside camera photos, and many screenshots are near-duplicates: delivery updates, boarding passes, shopping comparisons, temporary instructions, chat messages and error screens. Google’s storage-management tool specifically surfaces screenshots, blurry photos and large videos as possible cleanup candidates. The suggestions are candidates, not an instruction to erase everything.

  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

There are two different kinds of “full” to distinguish:

  • Google Account storage full: cloud quota used by Photos, Gmail and Drive is near or at its limit. Deleting backed-up screenshots from Google Photos can reduce this usage.
  • Phone storage full: the handset’s internal storage is running out. Removing local copies with Google Photos’ device-space command can help, even though the cloud library and account quota do not shrink.

Check which condition you have before choosing a cleanup action. Cloud deletion and local-only removal have different risks and results.

Check what is actually using the quota

Open Google Photos while signed in to the account that is reporting the warning, then open its storage-management or account-storage view. The exact wording and layout can differ between Android, iPhone, the web interface and app versions. Look for a breakdown showing Google Photos, Gmail and Drive rather than assuming the Photos total is the whole account.

  1. Confirm the account. Tap or click your profile image and verify the email address. A phone can have more than one Google Account, and each account has a separate quota.
  2. Inspect the category breakdown. If Gmail or Drive occupies most of the 15 GB, deleting screenshots alone will not solve the warning.
  3. Open the Photos storage-management recommendations. Google identifies screenshots, blurry photos and large videos as categories that may be worth reviewing.
  4. Record your goal. Decide whether you need more room on the phone, more room in the Google Account, or both. The correct command depends on that decision.

If the storage warning appears in Gmail or Drive, use those products’ own storage views to locate large messages, attachments or files. Do not delete Photos items merely because another Google service is responsible for the quota.

Choose the right cleanup action

Action Primary goal What happens to the file Risk and preservation
Free up space on this device Reclaim phone storage Removes local copies that Google Photos says are safely backed up; the items remain viewable in Google Photos while you are signed in and online. Lower risk after backup verification, but the files are no longer in the phone’s built-in gallery or available offline.
Delete selected items in Photos’ storage-management view Reduce Google Account cloud usage Removes the selected screenshots or other media from the cloud library. This is the action that can reduce the Photos portion of the shared quota. Destructive. Review every item first and retain another copy of anything important.
Export before deleting Preserve important records Creates a copy on a computer or portable external drive/SSD before cloud cleanup. Best protection against mistaken deletion or a later need for an old screenshot; it requires extra storage and an organized archive.
Buy additional Google One capacity Keep the library without deleting Increases available Google Account storage under a paid plan. Costs recur, and plan availability and prices vary by country and can change.

Safe workflow for reclaiming Google Photos cloud storage

1. Verify that the items are backed up

Before removing anything from the phone, confirm that Google Photos reports backup as complete for the items you care about. Google’s help documentation says to ensure photos are backed up properly before using the device-space feature.

Open several recent screenshots and older screenshots in Google Photos. If an item shows a pending, paused or failed backup state, leave it on the phone until the upload finishes. Check that you are viewing the intended Google Account; backup can be enabled for one account while you are looking at another.

For especially important files, verify from another device or from photos.google.com while signed in. Seeing the item there confirms that a cloud copy exists, but it does not replace the need for a second independent backup when the file is irreplaceable.

2. Make a second copy of irreplaceable screenshots

Google Photos is useful as a cloud library, but a single copy is a poor safety plan. Download important screenshots or photos to a computer, then copy them to a portable external drive or SSD. This is particularly worthwhile for tax documents, receipts needed for returns, travel confirmations, legal records, medical instructions, work evidence and family images.

Use descriptive folders and filenames, and open a sample of the exported files before deleting the cloud originals. Keep the external drive disconnected when it is not being used so accidental deletion or a device problem cannot affect both copies at once. A second physical copy is optional for disposable images but strongly recommended for anything difficult or impossible to replace.

3. Review screenshots in Manage storage

Open Google Photos’ storage-management tool and select the screenshots category. Google presents this area as a way to surface items you might want to delete, not as an automatic purge. Work in small batches so that an accidental selection is easier to spot.

  • Use the large-video and blurry-photo categories only after applying the same review standard.

Do not rely solely on the thumbnail grid. Text can be unreadable at small sizes, and similar screenshots may contain different order numbers, dates or account details.

4. Delete only the reviewed cloud items

When you are certain that a selected screenshot is no longer needed—or that your exported copy is good—use the delete control in the storage-management view. This is the cloud-storage action that can lower the Google Account quota. The exact button label can vary by interface, so look for the command associated with deleting the selected Photos items, not the device-only command.

Pause after each batch and confirm that the selection contained only the intended files. If your account is shared across several devices, allow the library to synchronize before assuming the cleanup is complete. Never select an entire date range simply because it contains screenshots unless you have checked what else is included.

5. Treat the bin as a final safety window, not a permanent backup

Google documents recovery from the bin, but it also warns that items may be unrecoverable after the bin is emptied or the applicable retention period passes. Open the bin after deletion and check that the removed screenshots are the ones you intended to remove. Restore an item immediately if you discover a mistake.

Do not empty the bin until you have reviewed the deleted items and confirmed that your independent copies open correctly. Once the bin is emptied or the retention period has passed, Google says the deletion cannot be undone.

6. Recheck the account breakdown

Free phone storage without deleting your Google Photos library

If the warning is about the handset’s internal storage, use Google Photos’ device-only feature instead of deleting media from the cloud.

Android steps

  1. Open the Google Photos app.
  2. Tap your profile photo in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Free up space on this device.
  4. Review the amount of space Google says can be removed and inspect the listed items.
  5. Tap Free up [x] from device, using the amount shown by your app.

Google describes this feature as deleting photos from your device after they are safely backed up. The backed-up items remain viewable in Google Photos and at photos.google.com when you are signed in and online.

There is an important trade-off: after local removal, those files are not available in the phone’s built-in gallery and cannot be opened offline from that device. You can still find them in Google Photos, but viewing or downloading them requires the app and an internet connection unless you later save a local copy again.

iPhone, desktop and changing app labels

The detailed current help steps cited by Google describe Android. On an iPhone or desktop browser, labels and menus can differ. Follow the equivalent backup and Manage storage controls shown in your current interface. Do not assume that a command named “delete” is device-only; read the confirmation text and check whether it says from this device or from Google Photos.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing device cleanup with cloud deletion

Symptom: you want more Google Account capacity but use Free up space on this device.
Result: phone storage may improve, but the cloud library and its quota do not shrink. Use the reviewed deletion controls in storage management for account-space recovery.

Deleting before backup finishes

Symptom: a screenshot exists only on the phone or shows a pending backup state.
Fix: keep the original on the phone, connect to a reliable network and wait for backup to complete. Verify the copy from Google Photos before using a device-space command.

Assuming every screenshot is disposable

Symptom: a bulk selection removes records that are difficult to recreate.
Fix: review screenshots individually or in small groups, and export important records before deletion. Screenshots often contain the only copy of a code, receipt or instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cleaning Photos when Gmail or Drive is the real cause

Symptom: Photos usage falls but the account remains over quota.
Fix: inspect the shared storage breakdown and clean the service using the most space. The 15 GB allowance covers all three services.

Relying on the bin indefinitely

Symptom: you assume a deleted item can always be recovered later.
Fix: restore mistakes while the item is recoverable, keep an independent export for important files, and empty the bin only after your review is complete. Google warns that emptied or permanently deleted items cannot be restored.

When buying more storage makes sense

After removing disposable screenshots and checking Gmail and Drive, you may decide that keeping the library is more valuable than further deletion. Google lists Google One as the paid option for additional storage. Plan sizes, prices, billing terms and availability vary by country and can change, so check the current offer for your account rather than relying on an old price.

A paid plan solves a capacity problem; it does not replace backup hygiene. Continue exporting irreplaceable files and periodically review screenshots, blurry photos and large videos so the account does not fill again with data you no longer need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable maintenance routine

  1. Once a month, check the shared storage breakdown for Photos, Gmail and Drive.
  2. Review newly accumulated screenshots in Manage storage instead of waiting for a full-account warning.
  3. Delete only items you have inspected and no longer need.
  4. Export records that must be retained and keep a second copy on a computer or external SSD.
  5. Use Free up space on this device only when the goal is phone capacity and backup is complete.
  6. Review the bin before emptying it, remembering that recovery ends after permanent deletion or the applicable retention period.

This separation of goals—device space versus cloud quota—prevents the most damaging mistake: deleting a useful screenshot from the cloud when all you needed was room on the phone.
