Google is rolling out customizable calling cards in the Google Phone app, giving you a more personal way to present yourself when you place calls. Instead of relying only on caller ID text, the feature is designed to package your contact details into a card-style experience.
Because this is a phased rollout, you may not see it immediately even if your phone is eligible. This guide shows you exactly what to check, how to enable it, and what to do if the option doesn’t appear.

What Google Phone’s customizable calling cards are
Calling cards are a new customization layer in the Google Phone app that lets you define how you appear to others during calls. Think of it as a structured “profile” tied to your calling identity, designed to be clearer and more consistent than plain caller ID alone.

Why calling cards matter (and what they change for callers)
Traditional caller ID is limited: it typically shows a name and number, and it can be inconsistent depending on how your number is stored by the recipient. Calling cards aim to improve the experience by letting you define a cleaner presentation.
- More control: you can tailor what’s shown, rather than being stuck with whatever caller ID text your network or contacts resolve.
- Better first impression: your information is more “card-like,” which can be easier to recognize during an incoming call context.
- Consistency across calls: you’re not limited to whatever another person typed into their contacts (or didn’t).
Prerequisites: what you need before you can use them
Calling cards are delivered via the Google Phone app, so your eligibility depends on the app build and rollout state—not just your Android version. Before you start troubleshooting, verify these basics.
- Android device with the Google Phone app installed (not a device dialer replacement).
- Google Phone app updated through Google Play Store.
- Signed in to the Google account on the device (some Google features rely on account sync).
- Stable network while you check for the setting (rollout flags can require a fresh sync).
If you’re using a custom ROM or heavily modified dialer/permissions setup, expect a higher chance of features being hidden or failing to load.
How to enable calling cards in the Google Phone app
Once your rollout flag is active, you’ll typically find the calling card setting inside the Google Phone app’s settings. The labels can vary slightly by app version, but this is the common path.
- Open the Google Phone app (tap the phone icon labeled Phone or similar, depending on your launcher).
- Tap your profile icon (often in the top-right) or tap Settings.
- Look for an option named Calling card, Calling cards, or a similar phrase.
- Tap Calling cards and switch Enable (or Turn on) to ON.
- Confirm any prompts (permissions or account sign-in) and then place a test call to yourself or a friend.
If you don’t see a calling-card menu, don’t assume it’s broken—your account/device may simply not be in the current rollout batch.

How to customize your calling card
When calling cards are available, customization usually lets you choose which identity elements appear and what content is attached to your card. Follow this pattern to keep it accurate and readable.
- Open Google Phone > Settings > Calling cards.
- Choose your display name (or select the identity source if the app pulls from your Google account/profile).
- Add or confirm the details you want shown (commonly items like role/title, a short bio, or contact methods if supported).
- Review formatting and length limits (avoid overly long text; cards can truncate).
- Tap Save or Update.
- Make a test call and verify what the recipient sees from their side.
Practical tip: keep the card short enough that it reads in a single glance. If you’re including a title, use a consistent abbreviation style you’d be comfortable seeing at a glance.

What others see when you use a calling card
Recipients’ experience depends on their device, carrier behavior, and their phone’s ability to render the calling-card UI. In many cases, you’ll see a richer identity presentation than standard caller ID.
- Device support matters: some phones may fall back to basic caller ID if they can’t render the card format.
- Contact resolution matters: if your number is already saved in the recipient’s contacts, their contacts entry may take precedence over your card data in how the caller name is shown.
- Network conditions: if call metadata can’t be delivered reliably, the recipient may see less detail.
If you’re testing, ask the recipient to confirm what they see on their specific Android or iOS device, not just what shows on your own screen.
Troubleshooting: calling cards not showing or not working
When the feature doesn’t appear, it’s usually a rollout or sync issue rather than a “broken” app. Still, there are several reliable checks.

Calling cards option is missing
- Update Google Phone: open Google Play Store > search Google Phone > tap Update if available.
- Restart the phone: reboot once after updating to ensure fresh feature flags are loaded.
- Re-check settings: go back to the Google Phone settings path and look again for “Calling cards”.
- Check account sign-in: ensure you’re signed into the same Google account used on your Android profile.
- Wait for rollout: phased features can take days or weeks to appear even on updated devices.
Calling cards are enabled, but recipients don’t see them
- Try a different recipient device: test with someone on a different Android build (and, if possible, a different carrier).
- Confirm formatting: if your card text is too long, it may render partially or not as intended.
- Place the call again: feature delivery can fail on the first attempt; test with a second call.
- Check your permissions: verify Google Phone has the permissions it needs for calling/identity features (Settings > Apps > Google Phone > Permissions).
Force stop and cache reset (when settings won’t apply)
If you changed details but they won’t stick, use Android’s app maintenance tools:

- Reopen Google Phone and recheck calling card settings.

Privacy, permissions, and data handling
Calling cards affect what people may see when you call. Before customizing, think through the information you’re comfortable broadcasting.
- Control what goes on the card: keep sensitive details off the calling card (personal addresses, private IDs, or anything you wouldn’t put in a public contact entry).
- Be mindful of syncing: if your card pulls from your Google profile, changes you make elsewhere can appear on the card.
- Limit permissions: only grant permissions needed for calling-card delivery when prompted.
If you manage privacy tightly, review Google Phone’s permission list in Android settings and remove anything you don’t recognize or don’t need for normal calling functionality.
Availability and rollout timing (what to expect)
Google’s “rolling out” language typically means staggered enablement. Even when you have the latest Google Phone app, your phone may not be flagged yet.

To minimize waiting time, keep these habits:
- Keep Google Phone updated via Google Play Store.
- Maintain a stable connection (Wi‑Fi or strong mobile data) while checking for settings.
- Reboot after an app update so new feature flags can load.
If you’re in a managed work profile or use multiple profiles on your device, also check whether the feature is available in the profile where you’re placing calls.

If you don’t see the feature yet, you still have options to improve how callers appear.
- Update your contacts name: ensure your own number in your contact entry has the correct display name.
- Use carrier/ID settings where available: some carriers offer caller ID name controls via account management.
- Tell recipients to save you: the most reliable way to control how your name shows up is the recipient saving your number with their preferred label.
- Use a consistent signature in messaging: if your primary goal is business identity, pair calling with a short message template.
These won’t fully replace the calling-card UX, but they reduce the “mystery caller” effect immediately.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Overloading the card: long text increases truncation and can make the card look messy.
- Using inaccurate or outdated info: don’t assume the card updates automatically—verify after you change key details.
- Testing only with one recipient: different devices handle caller identity differently, so validate across at least one Android device.
- Ignoring updates: some features only appear after a specific Google Phone update, even if your system Android version is current.
FAQs
Will calling cards show on iPhone or only Android?
It depends on what the recipient’s phone and caller ID rendering supports. Some devices may show a richer calling identity; others may fall back to standard caller ID behavior.
Can I turn calling cards off?
When enabled, you should be able to return to Google Phone settings and switch calling cards off. If the option is missing, it’s likely not enabled in your rollout state yet.

Do calling cards affect spam filtering or call blocking?
They’re an identity presentation feature, not a spam-bypass tool. Call blocking and spam labels are still determined by the recipient’s carrier and phone app policies.
Why doesn’t my new calling-card info appear immediately?
Identity metadata can take time to propagate. Reopen Google Phone, confirm you hit Save/Update, reboot once, and test with a different recipient device if needed.
Are my calling card details private?
They’re designed to be visible to people you call. Avoid putting sensitive personal data on your card, and review the permissions and profile sources the card uses.
Bottom Line
Google Phone’s customizable calling cards aim to make your calling identity clearer than basic caller ID, with more control over what others see. If the setting isn’t available yet, it’s almost always a phased rollout or sync/update timing issue.
Update Google Phone, check the calling card settings inside the app, customize with short readable details, and test with a couple of recipient devices. If it still doesn’t work, force stop the app, clear cache, and verify account sign-in and permissions.
