Even when a feature exists “in the app,” it may not activate until Google finishes server-side rollout. That can mean you’re on the right app version but still not eligible on your carrier line.
How to check whether a feature is actually available on your phone
Before you blame the app, verify what Google Messages sees on your handset. These checks save hours.
1) Confirm you’re using Google Messages and RCS is active
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture (or three dots) to open settings.
- Go to Messages settings → RCS chats.
- Make sure Enable RCS chats shows as active.
If RCS isn’t fully provisioned, many “new features” won’t apply and you’ll fall back to SMS behavior.

3) Make sure Android and Google services aren’t out of date
- Update Android system and Google Play system updates.
- Update Google Play services.
- Restart the phone after updates so RCS provisioning refreshes cleanly.

More reliable cross-device RCS (including full web parity)
Google has been expanding multi-device support, but feature parity between phone and web isn’t always perfect. Users often report that certain capabilities show up on Android before they’re fully present on the web experience.

What to check: Ensure both sides of the conversation support the same RCS capability level. If reactions aren’t present in the compose/view UI, your chat partner may be on SMS or a different RCS profile.

Best ways to try to get these features sooner
Waiting is normal, but you don’t have to wait blindly. These are the fastest levers you can pull while staying on stable, supported paths.
Join the Google Messages beta
Beta builds often include feature flags earlier than the stable channel. You can also spot regressions quickly and revert if needed.
- Open the Play Store.
- Find Google Messages.
- Scroll to Become a tester (or similar).
- Install updates and restart the phone.
Use Google Play services and Android updates correctly
RCS behavior depends on platform services and certificates. Updating Android and Google Play services can resolve “it’s enabled but it’s not doing the new thing” issues.
- Update Google Play services.
- Update Android system and Security patch when prompted.
- Restart, then re-open RCS chats settings to confirm status.
Check RCS capability on your line (carrier and account constraints)

- Confirm Wi‑Fi and mobile data are both working.

Troubleshooting when the feature still doesn’t show up
If you don’t see a feature after updating and confirming RCS, try a structured approach. Don’t guess—validate where the capability breaks.
RCS looks enabled, but a feature is missing
First, test in a brand-new conversation with a known contact. Then test a group. Feature availability can be chat-specific due to partner capability and rollout cohort.
- Start a new chat with a different contact.
- Check whether the missing feature appears there.
- If it only fails for one person, the limitation is likely on the other end.
Reactions or encryption don’t appear in one chat
Mixed capability conversations (SMS + RCS) are a common culprit. The app may offer limited UI for the chat state it detects.

- Ask the other person to confirm they also have RCS enabled in their app.

- Wait for indexing/restore to finish, then re-check the messages list.
Web/desktop support is incomplete
Don’t assume the web UI will mirror every capability in the Android app on day one. Web support is often staged feature-by-feature.
- Sign in to the official Google Messages web experience connected to your account.
- Send a test message with media and see what attaches successfully.
- If web can’t do it, test again after a phone reboot and a short wait for account synchronization.
Group chats behave inconsistently
Group behavior depends on who supports RCS and what chat profile the group forms under. Mixed participation can cause delivery differences and missing UI features.
- Confirm RCS is active on your device.
- Check whether group participants are on RCS-capable apps.
- For critical communication, use a smaller group or direct chat if needed.
Alternatives while you wait
If you need scheduled messages, advanced export tools, or consistent reactions today, you may want a secondary messaging app for time-sensitive workflows. Use Google Messages for contacts and default Android SMS/RCS convenience, and use your secondary app for power features.
