If Google Pay (Google Wallet) or Samsung Wallet will not work at checkout, first check NFC and the selected default wallet, then verify the card is ready and try the tap again without an obstructive case. The key clue is whether your phone shows a payment confirmation: no confirmation usually points to the phone-to-reader connection, while a confirmation followed by a terminal error points more toward merchant acceptance or payment authorization.
Start with the checks that apply to either wallet
- Turn on NFC. Open your phone’s NFC or contactless payment settings and make sure NFC is enabled. Google says NFC must be on for contactless payments (Google Wallet: Tap to pay with your phone).
- Choose the wallet you intend to use as the default. Android routes contactless payments through the selected default payment app. Google’s instructions are in Set Google Wallet as your default payment app. On a Galaxy phone, Samsung’s US instructions give the path Settings > Connections > NFC and contactless payments > Default wallet app > Samsung Wallet (Samsung: NFC is not working properly on a Samsung Galaxy device). Menu wording and layout can vary by model and software version.
- Unlock the phone and follow any authentication prompt. If Google Wallet asks for a PIN while you pay, enter the Android screen-lock PIN on the phone—not a card PIN on the payment terminal. Google lists accepted unlock and verification steps in its contactless transaction troubleshooting guide.
- Check the card’s status in the wallet. Google Wallet’s “Card not set up” message means setup or issuer verification is unfinished; “Card suspended” indicates an issuer-related issue. Confirm that the card and country are supported for Google Wallet using Google’s tap-to-pay guidance. Availability depends on the country, issuer, and card. For Samsung Wallet, check eligibility or a card-status problem with Samsung or the card issuer; the guidance cited here does not establish a complete support list or error-message catalog.
If the phone does not show a payment confirmation
When there is no tick, checkmark, or other response on the phone, focus first on the NFC connection between the phone and reader.

- Hold the phone close to the reader for a few seconds rather than tapping quickly and pulling away. Try a different orientation; the NFC antenna may not line up with the reader in the position you expect.
- Remove a thick case or accessories containing magnets, cards, or metal, then try again. Samsung warns that some non-genuine covers and cases with those materials can interfere with NFC communication (Samsung Galaxy NFC troubleshooting).
- On a Galaxy phone, switch NFC off and back on, then retry with the phone unlocked and Samsung Wallet selected as the default wallet.
- If possible, try another contactless reader. A successful tap elsewhere helps distinguish a reader-specific problem from an issue with the phone or wallet.

A tick or checkmark on the phone is not proof that the retailer completed the sale. It can indicate that the phone communicated with the reader, while the terminal, merchant, card network, or issuer still prevents the transaction from completing.
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- Ask whether the store accepts mobile payments and whether that particular terminal is working. Try another reader if one is available.
- Check whether the terminal accepts contactless payments for your card’s network. Google notes that a terminal can support contactless for some networks but not the network on the card being used.
- If the reader reports a decline or the payment otherwise appears to reach the authorization stage, contact the card issuer. The bank can check whether it declined the transaction or requires action on the card.
Google describes these separate phone and terminal outcomes in Fix problems with contactless transactions.

If the basic checks do not help on a Galaxy device, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests reseating the SIM and restarting the phone. Samsung notes that some NFC services store payment or authentication information on the SIM; this is a later device-specific check, not a general explanation for every failed payment. If the problem continues, contact Samsung or your mobile provider about the device or SIM. Follow Samsung’s current steps at NFC is not working properly on a Samsung Galaxy device.

Exact menu names, card eligibility, and NFC behavior depend on the phone model, software, country, issuer, card network, and retailer. If the wallet still fails after the checks above, tell the relevant support team whether the phone showed a confirmation and what the terminal displayed; that distinction helps narrow down whether to investigate the phone, reader, or payment authorization.
