Google News AI summaries are not one separately documented product or one universal ranking model. The phrase usually covers Google News discovery, Search news features such as Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the automated systems that select, organize and sometimes summarize coverage. Google describes signals including relevance, prominence, publisher authoritativeness, the amount and prominence of coverage, citations and significant original reporting. Publishers can limit search previews with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex; Google-Extended is a separate robots.txt control for Gemini and Vertex AI generative APIs, not a universal opt-out from every Google news surface.
What “Google News AI summaries” actually refers to
Google’s public documentation explains several related systems rather than a single product with a complete, published specification. Google News organizes news topics and publications, while Google Search can show news carousels, Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode responses. A reader may call any concise, automatically assembled answer a “Google News AI summary,” but the eligibility rules, display format and controls can differ by surface.

This distinction matters to publishers. Inclusion in Google News does not guarantee a link in an AI Overview, and appearing in an AI Overview does not prove that the same page was selected for Google News. Treat each surface as a separate distribution channel when measuring traffic, visibility and technical changes.

How Google selects stories and sources
Google Publisher Center says that, when a topic is in the news, algorithms organize stories and articles using factors such as relevance, prominence and authoritativeness of the publisher. Google’s broader Search explanation adds other signals that help determine how coverage is ordered and represented.

Relevance to the topic or query
The page must address the event, subject or question being searched. A technically strong page about a different angle can still be a poor match for a breaking-news query. Clear headlines, accurate dates, descriptive text and an identifiable article subject help automated systems interpret relevance.
Prominence and breadth of coverage
Search systems consider how heavily sources cover a story and how prominently they feature it. A developing event with substantial coverage can receive more news visibility than a lightly reported item, even when both pages are well written. Prominence describes the story’s place in the news ecosystem; it is not a promise that the most prominent source is correct.
Publisher authoritativeness
Publisher identity and reputation are part of Google News’s documented framework. This is a source-level signal, not a license to omit basic article information. Make the publication, author, contact information and editorial context easy to identify so systems and readers can distinguish an established newsroom from an unattributed page.
Citations and original reporting
Google says Search news algorithms look at how often a story is cited by other sources and whether an article contains significant original reporting. Original interviews, documents, eyewitness reporting or independently verified analysis can therefore matter beyond repeating the same wire description. Citations help systems understand how a claim circulates, but citation count alone is not a factual guarantee.

These signals explain why one source may be surfaced before another, but they do not reveal a fixed score or guarantee a placement. Google has not published one exhaustive dataset, one universal model or complete ranking weights for every AI-generated news summary.
What data can feed news organization and summaries
The public descriptions point to several data layers. They should not be mistaken for a complete inventory of every retrieval result or model input.
Story and source information
- Article text and the page’s topical relevance.
- Publisher identity and author information.
- Publication and update dates, where available.
- How prominently the source covers the story.
- Coverage by other sources and citations.
- Signals of significant original reporting.
Publisher and product metadata
Google systems can use publication pages, source identity and author and publisher details to interpret a page. In News Showcase, the participating publisher’s panel choices, including selected images, can affect how that panel is presented.

User-controlled personalization
Google says users can control which account activity is used to customize news experiences. Depending on a person’s settings, news discovery can therefore differ from another reader’s results. Personalization is not identical for every user and should not be described as a single list of searches that Google always applies to every news summary. Account activity, location-related context and other settings can influence what a person sees only where Google’s product and account controls permit that use.

Generative-AI inputs and controls
Google describes the use of public-web publisher content in Search and provides separate controls for search previews and for Google-Extended. It does not publish a complete, product-by-product list of every retrieval source, model input or ranking weight used in news-related generative responses. That is why a confident claim that one specific database, crawler or model supplies every summary would go beyond the available documentation.
Can publishers stop Google from showing AI summaries?
Publishers have controls, but they operate at different scopes. A search-preview directive can change snippets or visibility in Search; it is not automatically the same as blocking every Google generative system. Google-Extended has a narrower stated purpose: managing whether a site helps improve Gemini and Vertex AI generative APIs.

Google Search Central summarizes the principle this way: site owners can control what appears in Google listings, including AI formats. Google also says that a publisher unhappy with snippet display can adjust settings or opt out. Those statements do not create a guaranteed, all-products block; the directive’s scope and the individual product’s handling still matter.
A practical publisher implementation plan
- Define the business goal. Decide whether the priority is discovery, controlled excerpts, complete removal from Search, or limiting the stated Gemini and Vertex AI scope. A publisher that needs referral traffic may choose a shorter preview rather than a total block.
- Inventory templates. Separate article pages, homepages, author pages, live blogs, subscription pages and structured data. Apply controls to representative templates first rather than changing every URL at once.
- Choose the narrowest Search control. Use
data-nosnippetfor sensitive passages,max-snippetfor a length limit,nosnippetfor broad preview suppression, andnoindexonly for intentional removal from Search. - Place directives correctly. Add page-level robots directives in the HTML or HTTP response as appropriate, and mark the exact text range when using
data-nosnippet. Keep directives consistent across canonical and alternate versions. - Set Google-Extended separately if required. Add the relevant Google-Extended rule to
robots.txtfor the Gemini and Vertex AI generative-API scope. Do not assume this rule changes Google News or Search preview behavior. - Test before broad deployment. Check rendered HTML, response headers, canonical URLs and robots.txt from representative pages. Compare what Search displays before and after the change, allowing time for crawling and processing.
- Monitor surfaces independently. Track Google News, Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode as separate outcomes. A change that affects a snippet may not remove a page from a news carousel, and a page absent from one surface may remain eligible elsewhere.
- Document reversibility. Record which templates changed, the date, the intended scope and the expected traffic trade-off. If visibility drops more than intended, revert the narrowest change first and retest.

How News Showcase and related programs fit in
News Showcase is a publisher program launched in 2020 with a $1 billion commitment, according to Google’s launch announcement as reported on its supporting-news page. Google says the program pays publishers for editorially curated panels and can provide free access to selected paywalled content. A Showcase panel is therefore a commercial and editorial arrangement, not simply a ranking reward for appearing in ordinary Google News.

On a Google supporting-news page published in 2026, Google reports more than 2,800 News Showcase partners in 33 countries and more than 5,500 European publications paid through Extended News Previews. The same page says publishers using Reader Revenue Manager keep 85% to 95% of revenue, and that Google has supported more than 7,000 news partners in over 130 countries and territories, with training for more than 570,000 journalists. These are Google-reported program figures, not independent estimates of the news market.
Eligibility, geography, payment terms and availability must be confirmed directly with Google. The program figures do not establish an open application path, an affiliate commission or guaranteed acceptance. Country-level restrictions for automatically generated publication pages were removed in late March 2025, according to Google Publisher Center; News Showcase panels were an exception to that change.
Do AI summaries reduce clicks to news sites?
There is a clear trade-off to manage, but the available documentation does not establish one universal click-through effect. A longer or more self-contained preview can answer a reader’s question without a visit; a concise, well-attributed result can also introduce a publisher and encourage a click. Outcomes vary by query, device, story urgency, source prominence, paywall and the amount of text shown.
Measure the question rather than assuming the answer. Compare impressions, clicks, click-through rate, engagement and subscription starts for pages before and after a controlled directive change. Segment results by Search feature and by article type. Do not treat a change in Google News visibility as proof that an AI summary caused a traffic decline, because news demand and competing coverage can change at the same time.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Confusing Google-Extended with a Search opt-out
Symptom: a publisher adds Google-Extended and expects AI Overviews or Google News to stop using the page. Correction: treat Google-Extended as the documented control for Gemini and Vertex AI generative APIs, then use Search preview directives when the goal concerns Search listings or AI formats.
Using noindex to hide only an excerpt
Symptom: an entire article disappears from Search when the actual concern was a quoted paragraph. Correction: test data-nosnippet on the specific passage or max-snippet for a length limit.
Assuming one surface proves another
Symptom: a page’s appearance in Google News is treated as proof that it will appear in AI Mode, or its absence from an AI Overview is treated as removal from Google News. Correction: monitor and document each surface independently.

Symptom: the intended directive is present in a source template but missing from the rendered page, response headers or canonical version. Correction: inspect the live response and test representative URL variants after deployment.
What readers and publishers can reasonably conclude
Google documents meaningful signals and controls, but not a complete universal summary engine. Story selection reflects relevance, prominence, publisher authoritativeness, coverage, citations and original reporting; personalization can vary with account settings; and Search preview controls have a different scope from Google-Extended. Publishers should choose the narrowest control that matches their objective, test its effect, and treat News Showcase and other publisher programs as separate arrangements with their own eligibility and geographic terms.
