A Google Messages beta build contains a code flag named enable_3d_couple_emojis, but the feature was not visible or usable in the app when NerdsChalk examined it. That is evidence of a possible feature in development—not confirmation that Google has enabled it, announced it, or plans to release it.
What the Google Messages beta code shows
NerdsChalk reports finding the flag in Google Messages build messages.android_20260928_02_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic, identified as a Sept. 28, 2026 build. Its report, updated Oct. 3, says the authors could not surface the feature in the app. The finding is from a third-party APK teardown; the Google sources available for this article do not verify the flag.

A flag can indicate that developers are preparing or testing code, but its name alone does not establish that the code is complete, enabled, or intended for a public release. The report does not demonstrate a working 3D emoji or a user-accessible control.
How the Messages flag differs from Google’s Noto 3D emoji project
Google has separately announced a wider redesign of its emoji collection, called Noto 3D. That project provides relevant context, but it does not confirm that the Messages flag is connected to specific Noto models or that the redesigned emoji are available in Messages.

| Google Messages beta flag, reported by NerdsChalk, Oct. 3, 2026 | A flag named enable_3d_couple_emojis appeared in the examined build; the report says it could not be surfaced in the app. |
A usable feature, its design or interface, supported combinations, or a release plan. |
| Google Noto 3D announcement, May 12, 2026 | Google announced a broader 3D emoji project. Jennifer Daniel, Google’s Creative Director, Emoji, said availability across Google would begin with Pixel phones “later this year.” That was a prospective statement when published. | That Noto 3D is currently available in Messages, or that Messages supports 3D couple emoji. |
| Google Noto 3D design article, July 17, 2026 | Google described a library of 3,977 emoji characters and said its 3D models are open source. | That all 3,977 characters—or any particular couple emoji—are included in Google Messages. |
Are 3D couple emojis available in Google Messages yet?
The reported build does not establish that they are. NerdsChalk says it could not access the feature in the app, and the sources do not confirm a public release. Google’s broader Noto 3D announcement is not evidence that the Messages-specific feature has shipped.
How would you use them?
There is no supported set of usage steps to give based on the reported finding. The teardown does not identify an entry point in the interface or explain how a 3D couple emoji would be selected, sent, or displayed. It also does not establish whether availability would depend on a particular device, account, region, app version, or server-side setting.

What remains unknown
- Whether Google will keep, enable, or remove the flag in later builds.
- Whether any eventual implementation would cover all or only some existing couple emoji combinations.
- How the emoji would look or behave when sent and received.
- Whether the feature would launch, and if so, when, where, and on which devices.
- Whether the Messages implementation would use the Noto 3D models announced by Google.
Until Google confirms the Messages-specific feature or it becomes accessible in a release, the flag should be treated as an unconfirmed development clue rather than a feature announcement.
