Valve’s Proton Experimental changelog lists a fix for a crash in Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance in an update dated October 2, 2026. The fix is for Proton Experimental, the compatibility layer used to run Windows games on SteamOS and Linux; Valve does not identify the crash’s cause or say which hardware or configurations were affected.
What the Proton Experimental update fixes
Valve’s October 2 changelog entry reads: “Fixed a crash in Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance”. The note confirms a crash fix, but provides no further detail about when the crash occurred or whether it affected particular systems. Official Proton changelog

The same update lists other game-specific fixes, including a rendering issue in Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition, a memory leak in Plan B: Terraform, camera-rotation stutter with the STEEL GULLET Demo, and a startup failure for Blue Effect VR on some CPUs. It also addresses Proton 11 regressions involving controller stutter in LARA CROFT AND THE TEMPLE OF OSIRIS and video playback in Locoland. See the Proton changelog
How to get the update
Steam Deck HQ reported on October 3 that users who already have Proton Experimental should receive its update automatically. For Steam Deck users who do not have it, the outlet says to search for Proton Experimental in the Steam store. These are the outlet’s directions; Valve’s changelog entry does not give installation steps. Steam Deck HQ’s update report

Does the fix apply to Steam Deck?
Proton is a compatibility layer for running Windows games on SteamOS and Linux, and Experimental is its testing branch for changes that may later appear in numbered stable Proton releases. That makes this a relevant update for Steam Deck and Linux users running the game through Proton, but the changelog does not promise that the fix works in every configuration or that the game is now fully compatible. It is a software update, not a hardware upgrade. About Proton

Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance also received game update v1.9.1221 on September 25, 2026. Its notes mention a crash when the game could not access the “My Documents” folder and crash prevention for conflicts between current game resources and mods. Those are game-side notes, separate from Valve’s later Proton changelog entry; the available notes do not establish that the two crash reports share a cause. Game update notes
