Use Google Maps to discover places nearby, compare their locations, save a shortlist, and plan a route. Since local profiles and reviews can appear in both products, the most useful approach is usually to research in Search, then organize and navigate in Maps.
Which tool is better for each part of planning?
| Planning task | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Learn what a place is, compare sources, or find its official page | Google Search | Search helps surface web pages relevant to your query; a local business profile may also appear in results. Google Search consumer information and Google Business Profile information. |
| Find places near a neighborhood or landmark | Google Maps | Nearby searches and the map make it easier to discover options in a particular area. Search for nearby places and explore the area. |
| Get ideas for restaurants, sights, or activities | Google Maps Explore | Explore can suggest nearby options, though some lists are available only in selected cities. Find nearby inspiration in Explore. |
| Keep a shortlist of possible venues | Google Maps | Signed-in users can save places to lists and access them across devices. Save favorite places. |
| Compare locations and work out how to get there | Google Maps | Maps provides directions for multiple travel modes and route options. Get directions and show routes. |
| Verify a detail that may have changed, such as holiday hours | Search, the venue’s official page, and the venue itself | Business profiles may combine information from different sources, so a listing should not be treated as a guarantee. How Google sources Business Profile information. |
Neither tool is a universal winner. Search is better for understanding a place and checking its own published information; Maps is better for deciding where it fits into a visit and how to get there.

What Google Maps adds to place discovery
Nearby search and Explore
In Maps, search for a category or type of place near an area you plan to visit. Results can include ratings and descriptions, while Explore can surface nearby restaurants, local favorites, sights, and activities. Some recommendations can adapt to location and time, and some lists are limited to selected cities, so availability and suggestions can vary.
Google says local Maps results are based primarily on relevance, distance, and prominence. Paid content is labeled; Google says payments from other companies do not influence ordinary Maps local results. Google’s nearby search guidance.
#1 Best Overall
Save a shortlist
Save promising venues to Maps lists so you can return to them while planning. The documented cross-device workflow requires signing in, and a saved list can contain up to 3,000 entries. Google Maps Help: Save favorite places.
Compare routes and stops
Maps directions support several travel modes and route customization. Google’s computer directions guide allows up to nine stops, including the final destination; available modes and options can differ by route and platform. Google Maps Help: Get directions and show routes.
Why Search still matters when choosing a venue
Search is useful when you need context beyond a map listing: what an attraction offers, whether it suits your plans, or where the venue publishes admission rules and current notices. Open the official venue page for details such as closures, reservations, ticket availability, hours, and last entry.

Google Business Profiles and reviews can appear in both Search and Maps. Google says profile information may draw on details supplied by the business, public web content, licensed data, and user contributions. Results also depend on factors such as the query, location, settings, and available information, so two people may not see identical results. Confirm consequential or time-sensitive details directly with the venue. Google Business Profile Help.
Use reviews as one signal
Google says a displayed review score is the average of Google-published ratings on a five-star scale. After a new review, an updated score can take up to two weeks to appear. A score can help with an initial comparison, but it does not establish whether a place meets your particular needs. Google’s review-score guidance.
A practical Search-to-Maps planning workflow
- Research the idea in Search. Search for the destination, attraction type, or question you need answered. Open official venue pages for rules, closures, reservations, and current hours.
- Check candidate places in Maps. Compare where each venue is, what is nearby, and how it relates to transit or other stops on your visit.
- Save the candidates. Add likely options to a Maps list; sign in if you want the documented cross-device saving workflow.
- Plan the route. Choose a travel mode and review route options. On a computer, Google’s directions guide supports up to nine stops including the final destination.
- Prepare for limited connectivity if needed. Download the relevant offline map area before setting out, if offline maps are available for your region and device.
- Verify the details that affect your visit. Contact the venue about special hours, tickets, or last-entry rules rather than relying only on a listing.
What to know about using Maps offline
Offline Maps is a backup for some navigation needs, not a full substitute for a live connection. Google’s Android help says an offline driving route must fit within the downloaded area. Traffic information and alternate routes are unavailable offline; the guide also says transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable offline. Map-download availability varies by region. Google Maps Help: Download areas and navigate offline.
