These options are not interchangeable: Samsung documents DeX on specific Galaxy Tab models, while Google’s Desktop windowing is available only on supported devices. Lenovo’s Tab P11 Gen 2 offers split-screen multitasking, which is useful but not evidence of a desktop workspace. Why the Galaxy Tab S11 series is the clearest documented choice
Samsung’s support page describes standalone DeX on the tablet screen for listed Galaxy Tab generations, including S-series models from Tab S4 through S11 and certain A-series tablets. On listed Galaxy Tabs running Android 16 with One UI 8, users can open apps in pop-up windows, move and resize them, and use up to four workspaces. The eligible model list and steps depend on software version, so check the support page for the specific tablet rather than assuming every Galaxy Tab has the same features.
Samsung’s September 4, 2025 announcement also describes DeX Extended Mode for the S11 series, creating a tablet-and-external-monitor setup. Samsung identifies the Book Cover Keyboard Slim as an accessory. The 11-inch S11 is the more portable screen size; the 14.6-inch S11 Ultra gives windows more room but makes for a larger desk setup. The announcement’s up-to-four-workspaces figure is a stated capability, not a measure of how many apps will run smoothly for any particular workload.

What DeX and Android Desktop windowing actually do
Samsung DeX
DeX provides a desktop-like interface on compatible Galaxy tablets. Samsung documents standalone use, external display connections on supported devices, and input from a keyboard cover, S Pen, USB or Bluetooth keyboard, and mouse. Wired and wireless display options vary by model; verify the exact tablet’s support documentation before buying a monitor or adapter for it. Google Desktop windowing
Google describes Desktop windowing as a way to open multiple apps in separate windows and resize or arrange them on supported large-screen Android devices. With a supported physical keyboard, apps can open in Desktop windowing; Google documents the Action + Ctrl + Down arrow shortcut. When an external display is connected, Android may mirror the tablet or start a separate desktop session, depending on device support and settings. Google warns that availability and experience vary by device, so the feature name alone is not proof that a particular tablet supports it. Choose by screen, workflow and accessories
- For a portable desk setup: compare the 11-inch Galaxy Tab S11 with the exact keyboard cover and monitor workflow you expect to use.
- For more room for multiple windows: consider the 14.6-inch S11 Ultra or the S12 Ultra, while accounting for their larger form factor.
- For external-monitor work: confirm that the exact tablet supports video output and the display mode you need. A USB-C connector alone does not establish that it supports video output.
- For typing and pointer control: check keyboard-cover model compatibility and whether it is bundled or sold separately. A compatible Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse may also be suitable, depending on the tablet.
- For two apps side by side: Lenovo’s documented split-screen feature may be enough; do not treat it as equivalent to separate desktop windows or workspaces.
- For a Pixel Tablet: evaluate its dock and Hub Mode as documented features; the cited specifications do not establish a DeX-style desktop workflow.
