Google Maps on Android Auto is getting a usability upgrade: an easier, more direct Add Stop button. The goal is simple—help you build multi-stop routes with fewer taps and less hunting on the screen while you’re on the road.

If you plan trips, run errands, or need to swap destinations mid-drive, this change can save time and reduce friction. Below is what it means, how to use it, and what to do if the button doesn’t show up yet.

What’s changing with the new Add Stop button in Google Maps on Android Auto

Previously, adding a stop could require extra steps—opening additional menus or switching views before you could append another location to your route. With the updated interface, Google Maps surfaces an clearer Add Stop control right where you’re managing your navigation.

Practically, the change is about shorter interaction paths. You’re more likely to be able to add, confirm, and route to a new stop without backing out of your current navigation context.

Why this matters while you’re driving

Android Auto is designed to reduce distraction: bigger targets, predictable controls, and voice-friendly workflows. A more visible Add Stop button improves the same idea—fewer UI steps, faster route edits, and less time looking away from the road.

  • Faster multi-stop planning when you’re juggling pickup, drop-off, gas, or a quick errand.
  • Less menu friction—you don’t have to remember which screen leads to stop editing.
  • More predictable route updates because the stop is added from the active navigation flow.

Prerequisites: what you need before the button shows up

Feature rollouts can take time and may not appear on every car or phone immediately. To get the best chance of seeing the new Add Stop button, cover these basics.

1) Compatible setup

You need Android Auto running with Google Maps for navigation. In most setups, that means your phone connects via USB (or supported wireless Android Auto) and Google Maps is the active guidance app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) Updated apps

  • Google Maps installed and updated from the Google Play store.
  • Android Auto updated on your Android phone.
  • If you’re using a vehicle interface that supports Android Auto, ensure the in-car system is up to date as well (some brands deliver updates via the car’s software channel).

3) Stable connection

When connectivity is unstable, Android Auto may fall back to older interaction patterns or fail to refresh parts of the UI. A solid USB connection (or a consistent wireless link) helps the interface load correctly.

How to add a stop with the new Add Stop button (step-by-step)

The exact look can vary slightly by car display size, but the workflow is consistent: start navigation, then tap the Add Stop control and confirm your extra destination.

Step 1: Start navigation in Google Maps

  1. Open Google Maps on your phone and connect to Android Auto.
  2. Select a destination so the route starts and guidance appears on the car screen.

Step 2: Tap the easier Add Stop button

  1. While guidance is active, look for the Add Stop button in the navigation UI.
  2. Tap Add Stop.

Step 3: Choose the stop location

  1. Type a place name (or scroll through suggestions) and select a match.
  2. Alternatively, use voice input if your system supports it (a quick way to avoid typing).
  3. Confirm the selected stop.

Step 4: Let the route recalculate

  1. Google Maps will recalculate guidance to include your added stop.
  2. Follow the updated instructions and watch for any new ETA changes shown on the screen.

Common scenarios: multiple stops, detours, and how routing updates

Once you know where the Add Stop control lives, you’ll want to understand how Google Maps handles route edits during a trip.

Add more than one stop

In many setups, you can repeat the process: tap Add Stop again and select another destination. The UI typically maintains your list of stops so you can keep the route in order.

Reordering stops (when available)

Some Android Auto layouts allow editing the sequence of stops after adding them. If your interface offers stop ordering, use it to keep the route logical (for example: stop closest to your current position first).

Handling a sudden detour or new plan

If you hit a detour, heavy traffic, or a spontaneous change, adding a stop is still viable—but keep your expectations realistic. Route recalculation depends on traffic and road availability, so the ETA may shift more than you expect.

Confirming the correct stop selection

Auto-suggests can show multiple places with similar names. If the route seems off, check the stop name you selected before assuming the navigation logic is wrong.

When you don’t see the Add Stop button

If your Android Auto screen doesn’t show the new Add Stop control, it usually comes down to rollout timing, version mismatch, or an interaction limit triggered by your current navigation state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Possible reasons

  • Rollout not applied yet to your account/car/region.
  • Google Maps version behind (feature flags often require an updated build).
  • Android Auto UI refresh issue due to a stale connection.
  • Not currently in an active route (the Add Stop control appears when guidance is running).
  • Phone connection problems that prevent the newest UI components from loading.

Quick test

Start a fresh navigation route, then look for Add Stop again. If you’re using saved routes or very complex itineraries, try a simpler destination-to-destination trip to confirm the control exists.

Troubleshooting checklist (fast fixes first)

If the new button isn’t appearing—or stop editing behaves strangely—work through this order. These fixes resolve the vast majority of Android Auto navigation UI issues.

  1. Update Google Maps on your phone, then restart Android Auto.
  2. Update Android Auto on your phone.
  3. Reconnect: disconnect the phone from Android Auto fully, then reconnect (use USB if wireless is flaky).
  4. Reboot the phone if the UI seems stuck (especially if guidance works but controls don’t update).
  5. Clear cache for Google Maps (not storage/data) if the interface is consistently stale. If you’re unsure, do this after updates and reconnection.
  6. Check permissions for location access on the phone. Navigation UI can degrade if location permission is restricted.

When updates don’t help

If you’ve updated Google Maps and Android Auto but still don’t see the button, it may simply be a staged rollout. In that case, use the phone’s Google Maps app to plan stops, then start navigation from your phone so Android Auto receives a multi-stop route.

How this compares to adding stops on your phone (and when it’s better)

Android Auto is great for driving controls, but your phone is sometimes better for complex trip planning. Here’s how the two approaches compare.

Phone-first stop planning

If you need multiple stops, a specific order, or want to review an itinerary before leaving, plan in the phone app and then start navigation in Android Auto.

Android Auto stop editing on the fly

If your plans change mid-drive, the new Add Stop button is optimized for quick edits without leaving navigation mode.

Decision guide

Situation Best workflow
One quick extra stop (gas, pickup, short detour) Android Auto Add Stop
Three+ stops, careful ordering, or “tour loop” routing Phone-first planning
Spontaneous changes while guidance is active Android Auto stop editing
Stop control missing or UI bugged on your setup Phone app itinerary + start navigation

Privacy and permissions considerations

Adding stops doesn’t just change routing—it also involves location and destination data. Make sure your Android settings and Google account preferences match your comfort level.

  • Location permissions: confirm Google Maps is allowed to use location while navigating.
  • Background data: if data restrictions exist, Android Auto may fail to refresh guidance properly after stop changes.
  • Search history: selecting places can interact with your Google account activity settings.

FAQs

Does the new Add Stop button work on all cars?

Android Auto UI features can vary by head unit, resolution, and staged rollouts. Most compatible setups with Google Maps navigation should benefit, but you may see it at different times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will adding a stop change my ETA?

Yes. Adding a stop typically recalculates route timing using current traffic estimates. Expect your ETA and route guidance to update immediately after confirmation.

Can I add stops using voice commands?

Many Android Auto configurations support voice for destination entry. If you don’t see voice as an option, try tapping the Add Stop field and using the microphone icon if it appears.

Why does the stop I add not appear as expected?

Common causes include selecting a similarly named place, losing connection during selection, or starting from an inactive navigation state. Reconnect and try again after confirming the stop name in the confirmation step.

Is it safe to add stops while driving?

Android Auto is built for driving, but you should keep interactions minimal. If you’re not able to do it hands-free, wait until you’re parked or use voice where available.

Bottom Line

The easier Add Stop button in Google Maps on Android Auto is a quality-of-life change for anyone who drives with errands, pickups, or multi-stop routes. It reduces the number of taps needed to edit your route while guidance is active.

If you don’t see the button yet, update Google Maps and Android Auto, reconnect cleanly, and confirm you’re in an active navigation session. When the feature still doesn’t appear, planning stops on your phone and starting navigation from there is the most reliable workaround.
