This guide walks you through a reliable fix: confirm the phone can provide location, ensure Android Auto and Google Maps have the right permissions, and reset the specific app components that cause this symptom.

What the Report button means (and why location can disappear)
On some Android Auto + Google Maps builds, the presence of a Report button can indicate Maps can’t confidently draw your live position. That can happen when location permission is denied, location is set to Battery Saver restrictions, location services are off, or Android Auto isn’t allowed to access location data.

Before you change anything: quick checks that often solve it
Start with the fastest checks. These resolve the majority of “location missing but UI loads” cases.
- Restart Android Auto: Disconnect and reconnect the phone to the car. If your car supports it, restart Android Auto from the head unit.
- Reboot your phone: A full restart clears location service hiccups that “warm restarts” can’t fix.
- Toggle location once: Turn Location Off for 10 seconds, then back On.
- Confirm GPS & network are enabled: Use both Wi‑Fi and mobile data location (described below).
- Try a different USB cable/port: If you use Android Auto wired, flaky power/data cables can lead to partial functionality.
Fix location permissions on your phone
Google Maps needs permission to access location data. On Android 10+ (including Android 13/14), “While in use” and background restrictions can break navigation display on the head unit.
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Go to Apps > Google Maps.
- Tap Permissions > Location.
- Select Allow all the time (or at minimum While in use, but “All the time” is the most reliable for Android Auto).
- Return to App info and check Mobile data & Wi‑Fi permissions aren’t blocked (varies by phone). Android Auto can fail to update if background network access is disabled.
If Google Maps shows location permission toggles but you don’t see them, also verify you’re logged into the same Google account that’s used with Android Auto.
Verify location services and device location settings
Android location has multiple layers: Location toggle, scanning sources, and location mode. Missing any of these can produce exactly what you’re seeing.
- Open Settings > Location.
- Turn Use location ON.
- Set Location services to High accuracy (wording varies). This typically enables GPS + Wi‑Fi + Bluetooth scanning.
- Enable Wi‑Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning if they appear.
- Check Location consent for Google if present in your Android version (some builds route through Google Location Accuracy settings).
If you’re using Battery Saver or Extreme Battery Saver, turn it off or add exceptions for Google Maps and Android Auto (steps below).

Fix Google Maps settings for navigation mode
Google Maps on the head unit can behave differently than the phone app. These settings reduce ambiguity and help Maps request the correct location mode.
- Open Google Maps on your phone.
- Tap your profile icon (top right) > Settings.
- Go to Navigation settings.
- Confirm Voice & guidance settings don’t matter for location, but ensure Driving options aren’t set in a way that suppresses route tracking.
- Open Your contributions / Location history related settings only if you suspect account-wide restrictions. (Location accuracy for navigation should still work even if Location History is off.)
Most often, the issue is not a “Maps UI” setting—it’s the permission and location-service layer. Still, confirming navigation settings avoids chasing the wrong knob.

Android Auto runs as a connected service. If Android Auto can’t access location, Maps may render but omit the live dot and only show limited actions like Report.
- Open Settings > Apps > Android Auto.
- Tap Permissions > Location.
- Set it to Allow (wording varies). Choose the most permissive option available.
- Disable any per-app battery restrictions for Android Auto (some phones show Battery > Unrestricted).
- On your car/head unit, ensure Android Auto is set to the normal navigation mode (some aftermarket units have separate “projection” modes).
If you see an Android Auto permission prompt that you previously denied, granting it again is the fix. Android’s “don’t ask again” behavior can hide prompts after the first denial.
Clear caches and reset the right components
When the UI loads but location never updates, clearing caches is one of the most effective interventions—without deleting your accounts or routes.

Clear Google Maps cache
- Settings > Apps > Google Maps.
- Tap Storage > Clear cache.
Clear Android Auto cache (and Storage only if needed)
- Settings > Apps > Android Auto.
- Tap Storage > Clear cache.
- If it still fails, tap Clear storage (this resets Android Auto local settings; you won’t lose your Google account, but you may need to re-pair your experience).
After clearing, unplug/replug and wait 30–60 seconds for GPS to acquire a fix.
Update and reinstall in the correct order
Version mismatches can cause projection apps to render stale behaviors. Use a clean update sequence to remove corrupted builds.
- Update Google Maps to the latest version from the Google Play Store.
- Update Android Auto (also via Play Store). On many phones this is “Android Auto for Phones”.
- Update Google Play services if your Play Store shows pending updates. Location plumbing depends on it.
- Restart the phone.
- If it still shows Report only, uninstall updates for Google Maps (if offered) or reinstall Maps.
As a rule: update Maps first, then Android Auto. If you reinstall both at once and something breaks, you’ll lose the ability to identify which update introduced the issue.
Test for cable, Bluetooth, and head unit edge cases
Sometimes the app is fine, but Android Auto isn’t receiving the data stream properly. You can narrow this down quickly.
- Try a different USB cable that supports data transfer (not just charging). Aim for a known-good cable.
- If your setup supports wireless Android Auto, test wireless (and vice versa). If one mode works, the other mode is the problem.
- For Bluetooth issues, forget and re-pair your car’s Bluetooth on the phone. Do this only if you suspect pairing instability.
- On the head unit, confirm you’re using the correct Android Auto profile and that no “low power” or “restricted” mode is enabled.
If your car is connected to a power-saving hub or a USB port that limits power, you can get a partial Android Auto session where the Maps UI renders but location updates don’t.

When the location dot is missing but navigation still works
If routing voice guidance still progresses but the map never shows your moving dot, treat it as a visualization failure rather than a total connectivity failure.
- Open Google Maps on your phone and confirm blue dot movement is visible while you stand in a stable outdoor area.
- If the blue dot works on the phone, but not in Android Auto, focus on Android Auto permissions and cache clearing.
- If the blue dot also doesn’t move on the phone, fix phone location services first (High accuracy, Wi‑Fi scanning, GPS acquisition).
This split test saves time because it tells you whether you’re dealing with a phone-level location problem or an Android Auto projection permission problem.
Advanced troubleshooting if you still only see Report
If you’ve checked permissions, caches, updates, and cabling, you may be dealing with a persistent service disruption or a device-specific restriction.
Check location accuracy and sensor permissions
- In Settings > Location, confirm location services are ON and set to High accuracy.
- Search Settings for Battery optimization or Background restrictions and set Google Maps + Android Auto to Unrestricted.
Disable VPN and Private DNS temporarily
A VPN can interfere with Google services used for location and network assistance. Temporarily disable VPN and Private DNS, then retest.
Recommended Free Tools
- Turn off any active VPN app.
- Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS and set to Off.
Re-pair Android Auto from scratch
- On your phone: remove the car entry under Android Auto/Bluetooth (wording varies).
- Clear Android Auto storage again (if you already did it, consider doing it one more time before re-pairing).
- Restart phone and car head unit.
- Reconnect via USB (or set up wireless again) and test outdoors.
Common mistakes that keep location hidden
- Denying background location: “While in use” can work sometimes, but Android Auto sessions often need steadier access.
- Leaving Battery Saver on: Battery restrictions can stop location updates or delay GPS fixes.
- Using a charge-only USB cable: The connection looks okay, but data services degrade.
- Clearing only one app: Fixes sometimes require cache clearing for both Google Maps and Android Auto.
- Testing indoors: First GPS fix can take longer indoors; location dot may appear late or not at all.
FAQ
Why does Google Maps on Android Auto show a Report button instead of my location?
That UI pattern typically appears when Maps can’t obtain or trust live location updates from the phone. The most frequent causes are location permission denial, a restricted battery mode, or Android Auto not having location permission.

Should I allow Google Maps location access to all the time?
For Android Auto reliability, yes. Allowing all the time reduces the odds that the head unit session loses background updates and stops drawing the blue dot.
Does Location History affect this?
Location History controls whether location is saved to your account. Navigation’s live blue dot and driving guidance don’t strictly require Location History, so this problem is usually permission/location-service related—not account history.
What if the blue dot works on my phone but not in Android Auto?
Focus on Android Auto permissions and Android Auto cache/storage. Confirm Android Auto has location permission and isn’t battery-restricted.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can a software update break Android Auto location?
Yes. A version mismatch between Google Maps, Android Auto, and Play services can cause “UI without live position” behaviors. Updating all three and rebooting is the fastest way to clear it.
Bottom Line
If Google Maps for Android Auto shows Report and hides your location, treat it as a location-permission or location-service delivery problem between the phone and the head unit. Start with permission settings for Google Maps and Android Auto, then confirm High accuracy location services, clear caches, and update both apps.
If you still see the issue after cache clears and updates, test a different USB cable or switch between wired and wireless Android Auto. That narrowing step often reveals a hardware or projection-mode edge case.
