- Go to your Home screen.
- Long-press an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll to find Google or Google Search.
- Long-press the Google Search widget and drag it onto the Home screen.
- Release to place it.
After placement, you should see the widget’s normal search entry/preview. Now you can look for the shortcut configuration.
How to set the shortcut inside the widget
The shortcut option is typically configured through widget editing. Android doesn’t standardize every label across launchers, so look for the closest equivalent to “Edit” or “Widget settings.”
Method 1: Edit from the widget (most common)
- Locate the Google Search widget on your Home screen.

Method 3: If you don’t see shortcut options, verify app/launcher updates
Because this is a rolling change, your widget may look correct but not yet include the shortcut controls.

If your shortcut is voice-enabled, expect normal microphone prompts and permissions behavior. If you see repeated prompts, check Android’s app permissions for the Google app.

Does the shortcut work on every Android phone?
No. It depends on the Google app/widget rollout and your launcher’s widget editor behavior. Updating the Google app and re-adding the widget are the two most effective first steps.
What if I can’t find the Google Search widget?
Open your launcher’s Widgets panel and search for Google or Search. If you don’t see it, update the Google app first, then try again.
Will this shortcut option replace my existing Google Search widget?
Usually it won’t “upgrade” an old widget in place. If you don’t see the shortcut picker, remove the widget and add it again after updating the Google app.
