Which Google Maps setting can help save battery?
Google Maps has two separate appearance controls: one for the map while navigating and another for the app while browsing. For an active route, the relevant setting is the navigation colour scheme. Google says dark theme makes the screen easier to read and can help reduce battery use, without quantifying the effect.

How to set navigation to Night on Android
Google documents these navigation controls for Android 10 and later. To change the map display during navigation:

- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Go to Settings > Navigation.
- Scroll to Map display.
- Under Colour scheme, select Night. Choose Automatic if you want Maps to follow the Android system theme.

Night navigation versus a dark app theme
If you want the map to look dark while exploring rather than only during turn-by-turn navigation, change the general app theme instead. The two settings apply in different contexts.

For the app theme, open profile picture or initial > Settings > App and display > Theme. Google documents the appearance controls for Android 10 and later in its dark theme instructions.

Other ways to reduce drain during navigation
Google identifies current location, the screen, and speakers as battery users while Maps navigation is running; it does not assign a share of the drain to any one of them. Its navigation help recommends using a power adaptor, especially for trips longer than 30 minutes. It also says you can turn off the screen when you do not need to view the map and continue hearing voice directions.
Can you rely on downloaded Google Maps for hiking offline?
Downloaded areas can provide a fallback when connectivity is poor, but Google Maps offline mode is not a substitute for walking directions: Google says offline walking directions are unavailable on both Android and iPhone or iPad. The whole route must also fit within the downloaded area for offline guidance that is supported.

Download an area on Android
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Offline maps > Select your own map.
- Adjust the area to cover the place you need, then tap Download.
Google’s Android offline maps help says transit, bicycling, and walking directions are unavailable offline.
Download an area on iPhone or iPad
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Select Offline maps > Select your own map.
- Adjust the area and download it.
Google’s iPhone and iPad instructions likewise state that offline public transport, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable. Map downloads may also be unavailable in some countries or regions because of contractual, language, address-format, or other limitations.
