Google Maps can make busy days easier to plan by helping you check a journey at the time you’ll travel, revisit frequent routes, find saved destinations, and navigate when connectivity drops. These features streamline planning and coordination, but they don’t guarantee a faster trip: estimates depend on traffic and transit schedules, and offline navigation loses live information.
How do I plan for the time I’ll actually travel?
For a commute, appointment, or other trip with one destination, check directions for the time you expect to leave or arrive rather than relying only on current conditions. Google Maps Help says the travel-time estimate uses traffic and public transport schedules for the planned travel time. It is an estimate, not a promise: disruptions or schedule changes may not be reflected.

In the app or on a computer, open directions for your destination and choose a departure or arrival time if the option is available. The feature supports driving and transit routes to a single destination; Google’s computer instructions also require you to be signed in. Google Maps Help: Discover helpful features in Google Maps.

When driving, review the route options on the map before you begin navigation. Google Maps uses real-time traffic information, and it may offer alternate routes. Compare the displayed options before choosing; an alternate route is not always available, and the fastest estimate is not guaranteed to be the fastest journey in practice.

How do I keep destinations and shared plans easy to find?
Save places in lists to retrieve them later. For example, create a list of destinations for a day of errands, then open it when you’re planning. A list organizes places; it does not automatically calculate the best order for visiting them.

If you’re coordinating with someone, you can share a list by link or make it shared. Starred places cannot be shared, so use a list when you want to share destinations. See Google Maps Help: Create a list of places.
How do I get back to a frequent trip quickly?
On the Google Maps mobile app, saved trips provide quick access to frequent routes and estimated arrival times. The help page lists driving, public transport, and two-wheeler trips as supported. This is a mobile feature, so don’t expect the same saved-trips screen on a computer.

How do I navigate if I may lose signal?
Download the relevant map area while you still have a connection, and check that it covers the whole drive. Offline driving directions work only when the entire route is within the downloaded area. Google Maps Help notes that offline use does not include live traffic or alternate driving routes; transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable offline. Downloads are not available in every country or region, and downloaded maps need updating before they expire.

Which feature fits the problem I’m solving?
| Need | Feature | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Estimate a future journey | Set a departure or arrival time | One destination; driving or transit. It is an estimate based on traffic and schedules, not a guarantee. |
| Compare driving options before leaving | Check traffic and alternate routes | Alternates may not be offered; live traffic depends on connectivity. |
| Retrieve destinations or coordinate errands | Save places in lists | Lists do not automatically optimize the visit order; starred places cannot be shared. |
| Open a regular route quickly | Save a frequent trip | Documented for the mobile app; supported modes include driving, transit, and two-wheelers. |
| Prepare for weak connectivity | Download an offline map area | Offline driving requires the full route to fit in the download and omits live traffic and alternate routes; transit, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable. |
When is location sharing useful for a meetup?
Google also presents real-time location sharing as a way to meet up or let another person find you. It can help when coordinating arrival is the sticking point. Sharing controls and availability can vary, so follow the current in-app instructions for permissions and duration rather than assuming a particular setting.
