On Cloudboom Volt: What to Know Before You Choose It for Training

The On Cloudboom Volt pairs a firm, plated ride with workout versatility. A 40-mile review found quick transitions and easy-run comfort, but limited race-day pop.

The On Cloudboom Volt is a plated road shoe that makes more sense as a firm, versatile fast-training option than as an all-out race-day specialist. In Tom’s Guide, reviewer Nick Harris-Fry tested it for 40 miles and found quick transitions, useful stability at easy paces and enough comfort for longer workouts—but less bounce and propulsion than he wants for his fastest races.

What the Cloudboom Volt is built for

On describes the Volt as a race-day shoe, naming 5–10K and half-marathon distances on its U.S. men’s product listing. Its design combines two layers of Helion HF foam, CloudTec cushioning, a rocker and a carbon-infused Speedboard. That is a plated setup, but the presence of a plate does not guarantee a highly springy or aggressive ride.

Harris-Fry’s 40-mile test points to a broader practical use: fast training. He ran it during easy daily sessions, short and long repetitions, a double-workout day and racing efforts that included about 20 miles in one day. He called it “an accomplished fast training shoe.” That is his assessment of his test pair, not a promise that every runner will experience the same ride.

How it feels on the run

Firm rather than especially bouncy

Harris-Fry found the two foam layers firmer than those in other On shoes he had run in. The shoe felt nimble, but he did not find it especially bouncy or highly propulsive. Doctors of Running also describes a firm foam feel and questions its resilience at faster paces, while noting that some recreational runners may prefer a firm platform.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you like a grounded, controlled sensation and dislike very soft cushioning, that firmness may suit you. If you expect a plated shoe to feel dramatically spring-loaded, the Volt may disappoint. The available reviews are individual assessments, not controlled head-to-head tests.

Quick transitions, mild rocker

The carbon-infused plate and mild rocker helped Harris-Fry move through his stride quickly, but did not make the shoe feel as aggressive as his preferred race-day shoes. His experience suggests a distinction worth keeping in mind: quick turnover can be useful in workouts without making a shoe the strongest choice for maximal race efforts.

Comfort and stability beyond speed sessions

Although it is designed for racing, Harris-Fry found the Volt stable enough for easy running and comfortable during longer workouts. He also reported broad rubber outsole coverage and good grip on wet roads. Those observations describe his mileage and conditions; they do not establish long-term durability or wet-grip performance for all runners.

Harris-Fry said his usual size fit well, with a slightly tighter toe area than he was used to in cushioned On shoes, and he reported no upper rubbing. He described the mesh upper as breathable and secure. Doctors of Running reports variation among its testers, including differences in toe room, a snug midfoot and rearfoot, and heel-counter sensitivity. Those reports do not establish a universal sizing rule, so the fit should be judged on your own foot.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?

  • Fast-training runners: You want one plated shoe for intervals, tempo work and longer workouts, rather than a shoe reserved only for race day.
  • Runners who prefer firm cushioning: You would rather feel a controlled platform than a notably soft, bouncy one.
  • Runners wanting a race-capable option with everyday range: On positions it for racing, and Harris-Fry used it for racing efforts, but his review found its clearest advantage in training versatility.

Who may want a different shoe?

  • Runners chasing maximum race-day propulsion: Harris-Fry found the Volt less aggressive and less propulsive than his preferred options for his fastest efforts.
  • Runners prioritizing the lightest possible short-distance racer: He considered it heavier than he expects from a plated short-distance racing shoe. The available figures are from different shoe sizes and sources, so they should not be treated as a direct weight comparison with other models.
  • Runners who need a roomy toe box or are sensitive at the heel: Reviewer fit reports differ, and the Volt’s fit should be checked in person or through a retailer with a suitable return policy.

How it compares with the alternatives named by the reviewer

Harris-Fry points to the Adidas Adizero Evo SL as a lower-cost fast-training alternative and the New Balance SC Rebel v1 as a springier plated option. For more aggressive race-day possibilities, he names the Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3, Asics Metaspeed Sky Tokyo and On Cloudboom Strike 2. These are the reviewer’s suggestions, not the result of a controlled comparison or an independent ranking.

When weighing options, focus on ride firmness versus bounce, training versatility versus race-specific propulsion, fit, outsole coverage and current price. RTINGS’ Cloudboom Volt review has a separate use-case scoring approach and an evolving test record, with updates through August 7, 2026; its score boxes are not directly interchangeable with one reviewer’s 40-mile experience.

Is the On Cloudboom Volt worth considering?

At the U.S. listing price of $200 recorded on October 7, 2026, the case for the Volt depends on whether you want its particular balance: a plated shoe with a firm ride, quick transitions and enough comfort for varied training. It is harder to justify if your main goal is the most forceful, bouncy sensation for race day. No cited evidence establishes that it improves running economy, prevents injury or guarantees faster times.

For the right runner, the Volt’s appeal is not that it behaves like the most aggressive super-shoe. It is that it can cover hard workouts and still feel manageable at easier paces. If that versatility and firmer feel match your preferences, it is a plausible training-and-racing option; if race-day propulsion is your priority, the reviewer’s experience points toward considering a more aggressive model.
